I have played and enjoyed every mainline entry in the series. The only disappointing thing about the new games is that they don't have all the Pokemon in them.

Actually, I don't give a shit about the generation I grew up with or any other iteration of pokemon for that matter. I work with some gay who is literally my age and spends money on "classic" pokemon collectible shit and it's incredibly sad and pathetic. We're in our 30s and he shows me pictures of all the garbage he buys. My fault for ever having a conversation about pokemon with him to begin with.
Gen 2-5 are pretty much on par with each other so the tiebreaker is gonna be whatever you are most nostalgic for.
People who actually like Gen 1 have probably ONLY played Gen 1.

My first generation was 1 but my favourite generation is 2.
I only played pokemon that I grew up with, which equates to four full generations. My favorite is ruby/sapphire/emerald. don't tell me that's nostalgia bias, I have nostalgia for the other 3 gens out of the first four too.
I grew up with the first three generations of Pokemon and ultimately decided that the very first one is my favorite. Objectively there are better ones, I just enjoy the unsettling, mysterious atmosphere, primitive graphics, amateurish artwork and the many game-breaking glitches.
Im 36 and gen 5 is my favourite. Gen 2 remakes are second.
