Does anyone play EverQuest here anymore by any chance? We used to have a few guilds back when on P99's Green, namely <Leaf Quartet>, <Fallen Leaves> and <Clover>. I came back and figured I might as well re-post the old thread we had forever ago from here. If you play, how are you feeling about Kunark's release? I just came back and it's still quite fun.
For those curious, EverQuest is an old-school MMORPG that has both populated private servers and continuing retail servers. After having moved from Ganker to /vg/, it was realized that such a retro MMO as EverQuest might find its best company here on /vr/.

For the record, I'm Darious / Wandert on Green in <Leaf Quartet> over by Qeynos presently, though I'm only an Officer (and the only remaining one, until a Guide transfers leadership).
>p99
gross, that's just as bad as playing on a TLP, maybe worse
How so? It feels a lot more accurate to the original than Retail's TLP, who had max Sense Heading, maps, and other non-traditional skills. Also not having to get one's body made me roll my eyes, honestly. Not to mention, well, the fact it's free on P99.
you could max sense heading in a couple hours of macroing and everyone who wasn't ultra casual ran ShowEQ or similar cheats back in the day anyways
That's not entirely my point, but alright. I also never knew anyone who cheated. A lot of changes Daybreak made for their TLP servers, both on Fippy and Phinigel, made the game feel very unlike the original experience. Especially in comparison to what I've experienced on Blue and Green.
sometimes games are for fun you obnoxious moron
>everyone who wasn't ultra casual ran ShowEQ or similar cheats back in the day anyways
Thanks for inventing WoW and ruining vidya games forever
WoW's themepark designs and area storylines with quests and rewards were an improvement over mindless, autistic mob grinding like in EQ. Get fricked.
Wow is played by mucus covered infants, dumbed down for widdle babies. EQ is for men, sorry.
EQ is played by autistic losers, WoW is played by plain losers. I much prefer the autistic ones.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if it's incorrect.
I agree, what now homosexual?
Nothing is worse than the tlp, which I have never bothered playing. have a nice day
Does it run on linux?
Through wine, yeah. New one doesn't but this does. Daybreak said p99 was allowed to exist without legal trouble, too, so that's cool
no fighter/mage no play
Paladins and Shadowknights are pretty close, all things considered.
Shadow knight.
>true chads see through the shitpost and answer the actual question I had
Based.
>tfw I set up a p99 account months ago and had a blast, but now I can't seem to find time to sit down and play for a few hours
To the paladin who gave a clueless noob an axe and friendly advice, thanks for the welcoming party, I just wish I was a more committed player.
No need to feel bad, Anon. Games have spoiled us these days, and life has a way of keeping us from vegetating for hours on end like we used to. You gave it a shot and that's what matters.
Filtered.
I started playing again for a while, just soloing in my spare time and slowly building up experience and gold, but lost interest. I just don't know anyone who plays anymore and don't have any interest meeting new people. I'd rather spend my time on anything else.
Ak'Anon sucks!
Is it very grindy? Are quests fun? Writing good? Is it comfy?
I used to play Runescape back when it was still good (despite GE) but now I wouldn't get into it due to the grind, this is some beyond-Korean-tier bullshit
nowhere near as good as classic Runescape IMO
The grinding is fun, the quests are mysterious, the writing is appropriately generic and holy hell yes it is comfy.
classic eq is all about the grind and i would definitely describe it as worse than korean mmo grinds, but the difference is eq was very centered around that grind and the world & player interaction really suck you in. you don't really do any quests in the way you're thinking about tbh. you can safely skip this one i think but for hyperautists with unlimited time and a love for ad&d i recommend it
At the end of the day, you ideally find yourself doing the quest for the sake of doing the quest and not explicitly for the reward. The real reward is what happens between learning about your adventure and setting off toward it. If you consider leveling and the literal time you end up spending a consequence to a invested adventure, you'll find yourself very happy. If you have a specific goal and are aiming to achieve it within any parameter of a pre-determined amount of time, the grind will be quite the suck.
EQ is one of those games that unless you played it on spotty glide drivers over 33k modem while moms asleep back in 2000, you will not have any nostalgia for it. This game was not kind to noobs either
EQ is always that game that sounds more exciting to play than it is to play.
Sitting around camping mobs as they respawn for hours going through alpha loot rotation or whatever is tedious and unexciting.
It'll always hold a special place in my heart, though.
RPG's tend to be a slow burn rather than an exciting experience anyway. What are you gonna do, raid? Even if all you do is altprostitute to level 20 repeatedly it can be enjoyable.
>They think the objective is racing to max level over going on cool adventures, finding cool loot and making new friends
More than once people I grouped with in EQ to camp stuff were literally reading novels while playing.
The camping starts early, too. By level 8 you're already in Crushbone or whatever. Watching half the population roll enchanters and druids as they funnel into Guk and Mistmoore on Green was sorta sad.

do you have a source on that?
All the questing advice sounds great, but the reality is the game is over 20 years old. Especially on P99, leveling has been optimized to Hell and back and it's become just as dry and robotic as leveling in any other mmo. Except it's long and tedious because the game was originally designed with monthly subs in mind.
i hate this
I've been wanting to try out P99 but I already have FFXI sucking up all my time.
there a FF XI free server?
