Cloud tries to protect Aerith, claiming that fate can be overwritten, but Sephiroth strikes a second time and still kills Aerith, who says she had accepted her role in this story. Cloud is more angry than actually sad at her death and partly blames her for what happened. There is no alternate dimension bullshit with her.
