Everyone says this is great but the game is unplayable at several moments due to the darkness.

Everyone says this is great but the game is unplayable at several moments due to the darkness. Areas go 100% dark and any monsters in the areas also become 100% dark, making them literally impossible to see and shoot.

I kept running into areas with no visibility and Spectres, it's really cheap and annoying. It wasn't my TV black levels or gamma or brightness either, I mean it when I say 100% dark... literally no colors but black.
Why does nobody who sucks this port's dick ever mention the pure darkness that completely hides enemies?

Maybe because I'm playing on a real ps1? I'm looking up videos on Youtube and the lighting is way better with 32-bit colors from emulation. On real hardware, the blackness around Doomguy's face is exactly the black that many of the dark rooms go to.

Talk to me when you've played and beaten the SNES version. My eyes never recovered. I regret nothing.

Why would anyone play Doom without strafing? It's like playing SM64 on a keyboard, it takes all the fun away.

Doom being one of my favorite games ever, I made a point to play and beat every version of this game I could find.

The Saturn version of Doom, while charming, is unbeatable without cheating. There are 2 levels I recall that require you to run off a cliff onto a ledge to grab a keycard to progress. Because of the awful framerate, the jumps are impossible. I had to enter a code for all keycards to get past these levels.

That would be a funny story if true, but I doubt it's true as there's longplays of the Saturn version. You can move while having the map screen open which I imagine would be a workaround.

                Anonymous

It is completely true. Those longplays you are watching aren't done on the actual hardware, and the framerate is increased. I can assure you the jumps I mentioned are impossible.

thats dumb advice because what it essentially means you gonna be paying twice as much money for boosting your crt's brightness and burning those electrical bills. it's awful game design at best and downright cruel israelite scam if that's what devs intended for kids to do back in 1995

I gave you a solution to your problem. Either play with your TV settings or quit batching about something you aren't willing to fix.

          OP here, that's not me.

As I said in my OP, the TV settings have no impact. It's 100% black, if you turned up brightness or anything else that would normally work you would just make it 100% dark grey instead. The enemies are completely hidden in the darkness with it being literally impossible to see them eith any image adjusting, it's pure blackness. It's unplayable on Ultraviolence.

The minigun should act as a torch of sorts
If firing weapons doesn't light up the room you're playing a shit port

No attacks light up the environment. Not yours and not the enemies. It's really good besides the choice to have total blackness area.

Doom is trash? Agreed %100. But for future reference, please keep this trash in the containment general. That's what it's there for, as there's enough cancer on /vr/ as is.

i don't know anyone outside of Ganker who thinks these boomer shooter console ports were good

i feel like i'm in some twilight zone when people talk about these ports like they were the best thing since sliced bread. i had duke 64 for instance. props to the dev team for doing the best they could but it was still ass. and it was censored to boot

Doom on Playstation has better graphics and better music than the PC version. The framerate is only slightly worse (in Doom 1 levels at least, Doom 2 does chug a bit). I always replay Doom on Playstation.
Hexen 64 looks way better than the PC original, which is a pixelated mess. I do usually replay on PC using a Doom source port though.
