The problem, once again, is the timey-wimey shit they add to the story to put Zelda in a situation where she has to freeze herself in Carbonite(?) ...and then gets kidnapped. The entire game is just the longest chase scene in existence. It has the same issue Tears of the Kingdom has with its dumb "Find Zelda" main quest line.
The difference is that Zelda is a goddess in SS (literally) and the entire intro is designed to make you fall in love with her (it works) so the players primary motivation is saving her. And it worked.

It's not a fan plot when Zelda was marketed as a romance story since the first game came out. Romance is even the mainstay of the 1989 TV show. Link is kissed by Zelda as a reward in LOZ II. And the art for LOZ I show Link and Zelda in a romantic light. The hero gets the princess is a trope as old as time itself and Zelda plays right into that since day 1. So it's not a 'fan plot' or whatever you just made up.

OOT had a bit more going with her being Shiek and all, but then she gets captured because heaven forbid she play a role in the final battle, except for her glowey light show against Ganon (who was already down for the count, so I don't think she even helped)

It's early concept art. They needed to draw him without clothes so that they could consider how his clothes would deform around his body. In-game, Link always wears at least his pants.
Drawing and modelling Link's magnum dong would have added unnecessary complexity because the player would never need to see it, the developers would have to take it into consideration for how Link's clothes would deform, and there would be the risk of it clipping through his clothes.
Resident Evil 5 had a bug where Jill's vegana clipped through her clothes. Nintendo wouldn't want to risk that kind of bug causing a scandal and hurting sales.

TOTK was a disappointment and the majority of the internet admits it now. The honeymoon phase barely lasted a few months, which in Zelda-speak - indicates a shit and/or disappointing game.
It's very likely that many newcomers to the franchise and post-BOTW zoomies did not play the previous titles, and therefore didn't know just how mismanaged this franchise truly was throughout the years. So they logically assumed that ToTK would be solid, competent, natural improvement over BoTW on multiple fronts. Hence its insanely successful sales.
But now that ToTK is generally seen as a massive disappointment & overpriced DLC, had the gall to give players a recycled overworld with even more korok seed-tier filler, and a threw together shit story that even the developers admitted that they didn't give a frick about in recent interviews - there's no reason for them to stick around. Not when there are more options than ever before when it comes fantasy & open world titles.
So the next game WILL under-perform if Nintendo fricks up with their excessive mismanagement antics & BS again. They actually have to try with this upcoming title.

The dumbed down puzzles and idiot enemies were saved only by the prospect of the open ocean and all the cool stuff that could be hidden in it.
