What are some good CRPGs where you can be evil or join/become the game's "bad guy(s)"? I'm sick and tired of "le wholesome good hero" and I crave something different.
I've already played:
>KotOR 1+2
>Tyranny
>NWN2 MotB
>Arcanum
>BG2
>ToEE
>Pathfinder series
also some other CRPGs which I've played but don't really consider as "evil" in that sense:
>Underrail
>Atom RPG
>early Fallout games
>Divinity series
>BG1
>Planescape Torment
>Pillars of Eternity
>Disco Elysium (yes I know)
>Wasteland series
>Icewind Dale
>NWN1
(there's probably more but that's all I can think of right now)
Preferably something with a satisfying evil ending too (think KotOR 1), not just a "you can be evil in dialogue but nothing you say or do will affect the outcome".

The most evil thing you need to do when siding with Xana is killing whatsherface in self defense. You don't need to free your deadbeat demon dad in the end. You can just keep the demon gf he made for you.
You don't even have to kill her. You can just run past her. Which might be a bug, but it's there nonetheless.
My memory is vague but can you simply not save her from some spider or something?
Wait. I think I'm confusing my playthrough with something I watched. I think I never saw her after the spider temple, so she must have died there somehow. I just carried on with my demon girl
She gets captured by a spider at some point, iirc you can go and save her (you can even kill her while she's trapped in the web lol), or you can leave her, and I don't remember what happens if you do that.
If you don’t save her from the web, even if you kill the spider, she gets turned into a Lich that you have to fight after the lightning dragon thing in the city. For reasons.
half or more of the games these days push gray morality on you the frick are you talking about playing the hero?
"grey morality" is just a shitty excuse for "we don't want to pick one side or the other and risk alienating one half of our playerbase so we'll just stay in the middle instead"
it's the videogame equivalent of centrists
In Fallout 1 you can join the Unity but that's just an ending scenario. You don't get to do quests for them or anything.
Fallout 3
Jade empire(?) and dishonored
Most of the time is Evil for the shake of being Evil ,as stupid as being le good
Jade Empire is about half and half like with Mass Effect 1’s renegade/paragon system where it isn’t one to one good-evil. The beginning has the closed fist be about self growth and having people choose for themselves fairly, and a closed fist player can even gain points saving people from unfair fights. When the game loses steam at the end all of closed fist just becomes genocide for genocide’s sake and mustache twirling
>a closed fist player can even gain points saving people from unfair fights
Meanwhile the very first closed fist decision is sabotaging fellow disciple for beat in unfairly.
How many cases are there with closed fist choices portrayed reasonably? Maybe like a couple for the whole game? Lore-wise closed fist might be reasonable, but actual choices are almost all comically evil.
comically evil is still fun though
I don't know why anons hate on anything that's "comically evil", I think it's fine when done correctly. KOTOR for example might be considered "comically evil" but I enjoyed it.
>Jade Empire
I've heard reports of it being quite janky, is that true?
If you're not playing it on an Xbox console of some kind (it has backwards compatibility support) you may as well not bother. Emulation is jank and the PC version is hell to get running to acceptable standards.
not him but it works on my machine, what do you mean by "acceptable standards"?
Blocky bloom effect that's annoying as hell at higher resolutions.
Game tends to shit itself if you try to window it by force.
Have to manually rebind controller keys to make it understand what it's doing, and even then it will sometimes ignore what you set.
FPS issues even after fixing the cycle count stutter.
It's a mess.
it's a bioware game, what do you think?
I never had problems with PC and Mobile version
I liked how desperate she got if you went for the exorcism.
Keep hissing in my face I'm so close AAAAAAAAAAH
>no cute demon gf who sometimes gets close and hisses in your face for no reason
why even live
>Sometimes gets close
Play the game she literally lives rent free inside your head
Arkane peaked at DMMM and never recovered. Everything they've produced since Dishonoured 2 has been flop after flop. How did they do it?
>Oh nooo I'm so scared.
These look great!
it's amazing how much better westoids are at creating attractive female characters when they actually try. Japs would make her some generic uguu kawaii pure waifu who blushes and screams "BAKA" when she's naked.
She's on the ugly side in my opinion. The limitations from that era dont help but the way characters are translated from the sketch to 3d always looks a bit off.
>xana
>ugly
shit taste
>limitations of THAT era
go back
>you WILL take your ugly characters... and you WILL be happy!
>The limitations from that era
Shouldn't use terms you don't know the meaning of.
Age of Decadence, Shadowrum Dragonfall + Hong Kong have the most extreme options, Baldur’s Gate 3 has pretty consistent evil options so far
wat game?
Rance.
Rance 7/Sengoku Rance to be exact.
Mass Effect and Dragon Age let you be selfish, ruthless, and a bastard all around. Never completely evil to the point of a direct villain who destroys the world, but pretty deranged. Alpha Protocol and your pic related Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
>Mass Effect
In the first one having Ashley go with you was such a turn on because she's a renegade enabler. She will be just as aggressive and ruthless and it's a fricking turn on. The later games suck in this regard.
How did they manage to design and write a character who's such a sweetheart that you feel bad for lewding her, despite the fact that's she's a naked semen demon?
The entire game is just pure fanservice and literally feels like it's written by based incel devs.
>White roasty karen screeching at you all the time and telling you what to do
>Brown semen demon supermodel worshipping you and wanting you to run the world and her pussy
fugg i miss these simpler times
incelism wasn't that much of thing back in 2006 unless you had real mental issues you were able to get a half decent gf
Xana is unironically one of the better if not the best vidya girl
truly best girl
In Fallout New Vegas you can side with Caesar's Legion or if you're feeling really evil, the NCR
>or if you're feeling really evil, the NCR
i kek'd
proceed
Paradoxically, she looks more modest when wearing nothing.
ASS!
Try the Dragon Age games, specifically Origins.
>ask for kiss as reward from some tavern wench or whatever
>she’s super into it and kisses you gladly, scene is mild and fun
>do the same later with some princess girl or whatever, think you can play the character as some lovable rogue charming all the girls
>this time the girl is really put off and the whole thing feels coerced, super weird
The game really did want you to read the room and not just spam the same responses in different situations.
Origins was great for its range of choices. Could kill nearly every single one of your party members, wish I had that freedom in more CRPGs.
i know you've listed NWN1 as "not really evil" which is true, but have you tried the community campaigns?
there are plenty which are built specifically for evil characters, Blackguard for example.
>also some other CRPGs which I've played but don't really consider as "evil" in that sense:
Underrai literally lets you gas israelites and melt people with acid guns. There's an entire build called the "War Crimes" build.
Really? If so, holy based - I will now buy your game.
NTA but the game has the Protectorate faction (fascists) and the Free Drones (commies and israelites). You can literally join the Protectorate and gas the Drones, it's pure ludokino that hasn't ever been beat.
I'm waiting (impatiently) for Infusion.
BASED Infusion enjoyer
How much longer is it going to be in development for? I NEED something to scratch that itch.
kino
how's the gameplay though?
The Protectorate is closer to some big Empire like the USA or USSR. The Drones are also Railwayist(something like nationalist?) since they claim to fight for the Freedom of South Underrail. I have the suspicion that Styg mixed some cool aspects from different real factions to make both appealing.
Underrail really gives you the feeling that both you and the npcs have made some immoral choices and will be forced by circumstance to continue to do so.
Protectorate have the coolest aesthetics imo, funnily enough it's quite rare that games let you join the faction with the best aesthetics - for some reason, those are usually reserved for the "villain" faction.
It's one of the many factors that contributes to it being kino.
>Underrail
Why the FRICK does everyone keep shilling this game? Is it really that good? Should I play it if I enjoy CRPGs? I value story-richness and player choice, is this the game for me?
just buy it already
I will never give money to s*rbs
I loved Fallout 1 and 2 and most old isometric rpgs in general. I could NOT get into Underrail at all. If you're the type to obsess over minmaxxing stats then you'll love it I suspect. I hate the psychic stuff too in a setting that should be more grounded. It fit okay in Fallout since that was a deliberate send-up of 50s Americana, but not here.
My only issue with the old Fallout games is that you couldn't join the Enclave. Yes, I know it probably wouldn't work lorewise with the main character, but I'd have loved to see it even if it meant retconning some of the lore, playing as a different character or even downloading a mod that let you do it. Sadly, to this day, there's still not a single mod that allows that.
I think there was some mediocre mod for F4 along those lines, but yeah.
They're always afraid to let players go that route. And look at Attack on Titan - the author backed off at the last second of the narrative.
America Rising?
AR2 started beta testing some time ago, so that's something to look forward to. I'll never understand why devs don't give players more freedom in their games, more specifically freedom to explore the opposing side. It's one thing in FPS games and such, but personally I think if you're going to make an RPG, you should let the player side with the "villains" if he wants to.
It would make games much more interesting, replayable and appealing to me.
I can understand why most modern ones are afraid of it - cancelling and all that
Fair point.
I'm still hopeful that BG3 will have an evil path, it's one of the few games I'm genuinely interested in this year.
Starfield too, though that isn't really a CRPG - I imagine the evil faction in Starfield would be the pirates which I've heard are joinable, so that might be interesting. I'm just hoping they won't screw it up by making the pirates some sort of "idealistic" or "moral" faction.
I don't trust Larian at all at this point. I'd love to be wrong though.
>hopeful for bg3 (made by the 7-man cuck squad)
ngmi
but seriously it looks like they included some evil options in the EA and i think they said something in the trailer about choosing to keep the tadpole (which i interpreted as an evil path, though i may be wrong)
>made by the 7-man cuck squad
That's my main concern, I've already seen the "Identity" and "Body Type" shit they added to the character creator. Am I clinging on to false hope believing that mods will fix it?
I guess I should lower my expectations a bit.
For me it's that all the women, shadowheart in particular, look like every 'basic b***h' woman on tiktok on SSRIs. Or to be less polemic, her whole aesthetic is very modern in appearance. I'd prefer unironic and unashamed callbacks to the old 1980s and 1970s handbooks with the big hair.
>the old 1980s and 1970s handbooks with the big hair
That was pure SOVL, unfortunately the way WOTC is going I doubt we'll ever see that.
one can hope
maybe mods can fix it
where would you even host them? remember, nexus doesn't allow mods that go against their agenda anymore.
catbox? there was that non-newtonianmods page on rentry but it hasn't been updated for ages
>her whole aesthetic is very modern in appearance.
Could be worse. Have you seen what the official 5e artwork looks like these days?
nta but
>mfw i haven't seen any of it
do i really want to know?
never mind, just looked it up, it's the wheelchair shit isn't it
Come on anon, you can't just say that and not post a pic.
I hope BG3 will be good, but there just something about the d&d system on pc that sucks. Especially magic and the x number of spells per rest translates poorly from pen and paper.
Having to take long rests, cause my wizard can only cast 4 spells a day sucks and takes me out of the game. It makes combat boring when it's all just buffs, cantrips and toggleable skills for melee and ranged.
Don't worry, BG3 is DnD 5E which was tailor made for morons like you.
I can agree on the rests, it can get a bit frustrating after a while. I don't remember having any issues with the combat, though I last played it several years ago so I might have forgotten.
I'm just glad they moved the release forward, it would have been terrible to start playing it and then have Starfield come out in just over a week. I hope it isn't too buggy though, considering that they only made Act 1 available in EA I wonder how balanced the other acts will be.
You can literally do a school shooting equivalent with Minthara(?) iirc
You can certainly do evil. No idea if there's an 'evil' ending, similar to DOS2 letting the Eternals return or letting Lohse's Demon take over the world.
>You can literally do a school shooting equivalent with Minthara(?) iirc
And it's as dumb as a school shooting
>let's kill everyone at the grove because uhhh, my god demands it
Sounds right for Lolth
A chaotic stupid (read, random) deity that only exists because every other God around her is too lazy to squash her that somehow landed a cushy gig with the drow being brainwashed into following her.
Dragon Age Origins allows you to go total evil madman shanking people in dialogue with a little knife
>Preferably something with a satisfying evil ending too (think KotOR 1)
Seriously? Out of all the stuff you listed, you pick the weakest game,m
not him but the idea of usurping the old villain's position and using it to take over the galaxy is pretty satisfying, name some better evil endings if you disagree
It's okay. I like Soul Nomad's demon path a lot.
soul nomad was good, i only wish there were games like that but less linear and with more rpg elements rather than just being battle-dialogue-battle-dialogue-battle-etc.
I mean yeah, it was halfway to being an incredible middle point between RTS and CRPG.
Stop likened evil lady.
no
Does DMMM even count as a "CRPG"? I always thought it meant those isometric/top-down/zoomed-out point-and-click games like Baldur's Gate or Fallout.
Its more like than a medieval half Life 2 than a Crpg ,but you still have skills ,builds and choices . Game is kino either way
You're right. DMMM is more of an action rpg, granted that term is now generally reserved for stuff like Diablo and Paths of Exile.
It's an Arx Fatalis remake that is to say it goes all the wya back to motherfricking Ultima
Actual genre is Origin Systems/Looking Glass style first person creative murder solutions simulator
>Origin Systems/Looking Glass style first person creative murder solutions simulator
God I miss this genre
Well there was that one thing not long ago, but you've seen it all before
Warcraft 3
Overlord
Spore to some extent. Like, you can genocide species and wage wars but the artsyle is too cartoonish.
Command&Conquer generals - you can play as a terrorist cell.
Morrowind.
Manhunt
Carmageddon
Fable
Kenshi
Also you can just look up some old games and pick a genre of your liking, usually there is some sort of evil options.
Or you can go to tv or a and made simillar request but about anime/films if you want something evil
No lewding Xana ;_;
Good vs Evil
You sold me, just bought it. What mods do I need, if any?
Last time I tried Dark Messiah I couldn't get it to run further than the 1st level. Is there a setup or guide somewhere that just werks for windows 10?
Worked for me when I played it last year.
Frick xana the dragon sword is cool and her demon form is shit. That and her trying to kill you if you just approach the church made me kill her
I always purged Xana because I found the demon powers useless anyway. Never liked using them. Getting attached to characters beyond what they bring to gameplay is kinda ridiculous anyways.
but the game is more boring withour her commentary
>playing a game
>for the writing
DMoMM actually isn't too bad in that regard, esp. compared with mainline Might & Magic of the time it's based off
I don't even think of it as a Might and Magic game, I just think of it as Dark Messiah and Might and Magic ends at 8
Dark Messiah's storyline actually makes a lot of sense in the context of Heroes 4-5 world or whenever that whole seven dragon obsession started
But yeah you're playing it for the Mighty Foot button and other looney tunes shenanigans, not for the story
The story makes perfect sense self-contained as it is. You pick up everything you need to know in the game and nothing seemed out of place or odd.
Can you explain lorewise what exactly Xana did to resurrect the player? I've seen anons come up with multiple theories about Xana sharing her life force, some saying she merged your souls despite demons not having souls, others saying she let you die only to resurrect you so you would feel indebted and more easily corruptible
uhhh Sareth is magic
I disagree, I think the final dungeon isn't boring but rather lonely without Xana
Lea has no dialogue to replace Xana's missing commentary
>Getting attached to characters beyond what they bring to gameplay is kinda ridiculous anyways.
That's actually the opposite of being autistic.
It's time for the REAL question.
English or German Xana?
Shadowrun Dragonfall (the only good one)
>join "le bad guy"
>kill half your party in single combat
>all fricking ~~*Dragons*~~ must fricking hang
Alpha protocol has multiple "evil" endings, some include betraying and backstabbing the final boss.
If there was ever a game in desperate need of a remake/remaster, this is it.
If anything, I'd like to see an Alpha Protocol 2 - I really enjoyed the first one.
I bought the game based on the coomerbait posted in this thread. Was not disappointed. Plays like a classic, and damn have I missed those days. Unforgiving and with constant reloads, it feels like home.
