The natural barrier for fighting games and the people who actually want to enjoy it make the conscious effort to improve at it and WANT to go pay for room and board and a plane ticket to potentially go 0-2. There are states and personal investment involved and people are willing to pay that price to compete.
The other esports have such little barriers for entry and marketing and fake hype can cover the inorganic hype for a while but not for long.

biggest problem with the game right now is how fumble proof high ground defense is so if you don't dominate the first 20 minutes hard enough be prepared for a 40-60 minute game where one mistake from you or your teammates can blow the game. kind of why i stopped playing this patch, it's very easy for someone to grief the game. not as much solo potential.
oh and i'm sure people are tired of the meta heroes and stuff too. lots of stat check heroes that you either have to kill right away or they roll over your team like jugg, naga and medusa.

I'm feeling like this might be the last Evo I watch live. The only 3 games I was interested were all side tournies and the endless tv tier ad spam means I am just constantly closing out the player so I missed most matches too. Only Xrd had any hype to it either.
I've been watching EVO since 2009 as an 09'er and I feel similarly about day 3 at least. There was nothing really exciting about day 3 so far yet, and the amount of ads and political/identity politics bullshit being shoved down my throat is getting irritating. Day 2 SF top 96 had some great matches though, and a lot of the top 8 matches played off stream for SF and UMvC3 were kino but filtered by the format.
Me and the boys always hang out for EVO every year since it began streaming, this year was the worst by far due to the things you stated, we ended up having a mini tourney at a friend house with various fighters instead of watching that shitshow, thanks for reading my blog.

The natural barrier for fighting games and the people who actually want to enjoy it make the conscious effort to improve at it and WANT to go pay for room and board and a plane ticket to potentially go 0-2. There are states and personal investment involved and people are willing to pay that price to compete.
The other esports have such little barriers for entry and marketing and fake hype can cover the inorganic hype for a while but not for long.
CSGO and Dota have natural esports too however, the only "inorganic" ones are LoL, Overwatch, etc. Or games made for esports appeal.

biggest problem with the game right now is how fumble proof high ground defense is so if you don't dominate the first 20 minutes hard enough be prepared for a 40-60 minute game where one mistake from you or your teammates can blow the game. kind of why i stopped playing this patch, it's very easy for someone to grief the game. not as much solo potential.
oh and i'm sure people are tired of the meta heroes and stuff too. lots of stat check heroes that you either have to kill right away or they roll over your team like jugg, naga and medusa.

It eventually reaches a point where there is an incestuous relationship between the organisers, the publishers, the advertisers, etc. It really doesn't matter which player wins, in the end it's the rich guy in suits that wins the most financially. It has happened to other game genres that I watch, and it's happening to fighting games as well.

I'm feeling like this might be the last Evo I watch live. The only 3 games I was interested were all side tournies and the endless tv tier ad spam means I am just constantly closing out the player so I missed most matches too. Only Xrd had any hype to it either.
I've been watching EVO since 2009 as an 09'er and I feel similarly about day 3 at least. There was nothing really exciting about day 3 so far yet, and the amount of ads and political/identity politics bullshit being shoved down my throat is getting irritating. Day 2 SF top 96 had some great matches though, and a lot of the top 8 matches played off stream for SF and UMvC3 were kino but filtered by the format.
Me and the boys always hang out for EVO every year since it began streaming, this year was the worst by far due to the things you stated, we ended up having a mini tourney at a friend house with various fighters instead of watching that shitshow, thanks for reading my blog.
