movement good, combo system runs on easy to understand rules but has tons of exceptions and weird interactions that mean you don't do the same combo no matter what with a character. cool voice acting and visuals/sound that makes landing hits and moving feel really good. the high damage and general clowniness of the game let you get away with playing shitty characters if you aren't trying to win the biggest tournament of the year

Extremely open-ended, even among top tiers you can see little variations and tech. Aesthetically holds up, generally soulful while always being fun to play and watch. Also mods blew up a couple years ago.
You see a lot of Zero, Doom, Vergil, Morrigan, etc. but the core of the game is timeless and strong team synergy is king. You can lab the game forever and find new shit.

It's like slot machine gambling, the ToD combos are just the anticipation building part of the slots spinning with the flashing lights and loud noises and the payout is whether or not the incoming character blocks right.

Hazanshu is locked to SP+Down, fixed to only the Medium version. There's no option to do a motion to get the other strengths nor to avoid the damage reduction. There's no access to the extremely valuable Heavy Version which is plus on block and can lead into jab followup combos on hit. The OD version can be done with Assist+SP+Down, but that too has unavoidable reduced damage.
Meanwhile, Spinning Bird Kick is not on the SP button, it must always be done manually.
Kikoken is on SP+Back, still requires charge and only gives you the short range Heavy version. To do the other strengths, you must do the charge motion.
*Even though it is not technically a special, it's dumb that Serenity Stream is not the one on the SP button since it has no varying strengths, allowing the 214 motion to offer all strengths of Hazanshu.

frick no its not. in mvci hitstun, meter build and damage are all heavily connected so everyone gravitates towards different ways of doing the same general combo flow, and the active tag/stones/universal otg after flying screen are less 'interesting' to lab around then the mvc3 more limited otg/bounce/assist extensions because instead of having to think about how things fit together you just kind of do combo into tag into the same combo

It's hard to understand what's going on in MvC3 if you've never played it, most people will probably not even notice team assists with all that flashy stuff happening on-screen. So I can't blame people for thinking it's just one touch into ToD.
Losing characters in a tag fighter takes away assists, DHCs, etc., and makes the loss snowball harder from that point on. You're not losing access to moves and damage in the others so it at least feels a bit better even if the result is the same.
That's why x-factor and other comeback mechanics are a thing. In theory it balances back out since as you lose characters your potential to do touch-of-death sweeps increases.
In theory yes, but in practice a small handful of characters like Vergil/Dark Phoenix use those mechanics to obliterate teams in 5 seconds while the rest of the cast gets far less out of losing the rest of the match beforehand. People complain about comeback mechanics even more - see V-Trigger, Ultras, Rage Arts/Drives - and Marvel's no exception there.
you lose assist/dhc but you get the damage back by gaining lots of meter for getting hit and having a stronger xfactor.

Its so funny to me that EVO switched to top 6 because of timing reasons when SF6, Marvel, Strive are all games that have really quick top 8s even with GG being FT3, and MK11 was the only one to end on Friday so there wasn’t a need to squeeze in other games. The real problem last year was Mortal Kombat taking an eternity for some fricking reason and the egregious amounts of ads they ran not the games themselves, I was open minded when it was announced but this top 6 experiment needs to be deaded immediately.

Low damage per hit doesn't really matter when your combos last literally 20 seconds and do enough overall damage to kill even Hulk off one moronic stray jump S hit.

It was busted but the number of people actually reaching top 8s with it was way lower because people didn't have the execution down, or they were basically only able to play zero and couldn't do stuff with dante/vergil outside of assists. As a result you got to see other teams. Time passing has meant everyone can execute now.
