I know that people left of center do not like the expectations and beauty standards that are applied to women. Images are often manipulated and it creates an unhealthy depiction of reality that disillusions a sick mind, however; what I can't figure out is why a fictional depiction of ideals can't at least be attractive. I feel like I'm missing a significant piece of this puzzle.
One group wants to escape from the boring reality and witness their idealized fantasy.
The other group is attention starved, but also very lazy. They want validation without any effort, hence why they try to idealize themselves, rather than strive for ideals.
In the end both goals are not that different - both want to experience ideals. Main difference being is that the first one doesn't delude themselves into thinking that they are ideal, while the second group tries to force that view onto everyone else.

Alyx is great because Valve actually listened to their playtesters and made her more likable as a result, instead of shoving a bad character in their faces as some sort of political statement. Never trust Sony or Microsoft, folks.
