You just do. On Grand Prix’s he scores high on sand ocean and silence. He sucks on death wind, and is ok on Mute City and Big Blue. Probably the hardest to win a Prix with but it’s possible if you just get lucky and play your super boosts right on the first two tracks.
Starting this game as a Blue Falcon main makes me feel like I was playing with training weights on the whole time or something. Several dozen races with 0 wins, and scarce Top 10 finishes. Finally tried branching out and giving other vehicles a shot and now I've gotten two 1st place finishes in ten races.
I'm watching him for the first time, that driving is downright insane, not only because he knows the tracks perfectly, but also because of the way he feints the lucky bumpers.
Game is too simple. Most of the other players are children. If you learn how to control the golden fox and can master these simple art of visualizing the lanes that the bumpers are taking so you know where you can't be at certain time, you will win most races. A consequence of making the game casual.
If people are doing shit like that then Nintendo has no reason to take down this game, they better fricking carry it over to Switch Successor or else I’m gonna Falcon Punch them
I know that the fox kind of sucked in the original. But the way they chose to implement the fox in 99 is just so odd.
The high acceleration always used to be the fox's thing. And in 99 where everyone are expected to bump into shit way more often then in the original game, the high acceleration is already a lot better than it originally was.
But then they keep that high acceleration, swap the boost quantity system for the power/health boost system. And let the Fox recover to full power from zero health on a single recovery strip. Allowing the fox to do constant boosting every lap.

Most Fox for example are accustomed to 4 boosts per lap and thats enough to frontrun sometimes if uncontested, if there's no lucky bumper you'll be fine holding 1st
That guy does 5 boosts (at least on Lap 1), and he delays the 5th a bit so that he's on power down as he hits the refill, and refills there.
Can't do a single mistake playing like that but no one can catch you and no one's got the balls or knowledge to follow

Welp, I think this is it for me. I just reached S Rank yet I dont have a single win and I cant even finish a Grand Prix because I keep getting ranked out on Death Wind.
I can get in the top 10 just fine every race for the most part and this kind of feels like my ceiling. Just gonna give up and move on.

The more I play and the more I see high tier gameplay, the more I realize that Fox is just busted, can't really kill something that's over three seconds ahead of you and constantly increases the gap because it won't stop boosting.

Can you show me some kind of statement on this? Fzero GX was a player choice game reacing over 1.5 million sales which puts its sales numbers above fzero x thats estimated around 1.1 million. I cant help but feel I've suddenly started seeing people saying GX killed the franchise and the only proof seems to be that someone else said it in the last thread.
The 1,5 million sales was Nagoshi coping. The fact that the game never appeared in the Nintendo's financial briefing means that it didn't crack the 1 million mark.
But what really killed the franchise was the GBA game.
It's a known fact that the first game did the best and while X and GX didn't do terribly they still failed to match or do even better than the first game like so many series, namely Mario Kart for which Nintendo saw the two competing for the same space. That's why I said "partly" because GX did send Nintendo down the path of creating the anime and its GBA games in a desperate attempt bring the franchise back from irrelevancy, but it didn't work. F-Zero has some really passionate fans, but people tend to forget all the stuff that led to the series death and think Nintendo just dropped the series for no reason when the biggest reason was that it was failing to capture an audience in the same way their other games were.

Neither game did as well as the first one. That's the point. It's not really directly their fault, but Nintendo saw their other series doing better and better with each installment, especially Mario Kart, and figured that F-zero just wasn't working as a concept despite X and GX selling well enough under any other circumstances. They tried to broaden F-Zero's appeal especially in Japan with the anime and GBA games, but that didn't work so they gave up.

This may be partly true but that is not the last F-ZERO entry before the series died.
CLIMAX was last and it was tied into the anime. Look at the sales figures and you'll see the problems. Everything tied to the anime was a flop. That's a shame but that's how it is.

Anyone else completely confounded by Big Blue? Even pro maps I feel like I can pretty consistently get top 25, but in Big Blue I'll randomly land in the 40s, if not worse.

Thanks for the pointers friends, I've been trying my best to hit all boosts and use mine for the gravel but I still lag behind the pack. I think it's mostly due to me getting fricked over in or simply not knowing how to do the starting section well. I'll try to apply myself more and use the skyway effectively.

I've yet to get the hang of getting kills. Feels inconsistent to me. But I imagine having a big energy bar is very helpful for getting past death wind.
I only get kills that I aimed for with the gray bumpers, which useful for GP. Killing other players is completely accidental. Seems to me like the destroying even the bumpers is way too finicky in the sense of them actually gettin destroyed and who the kill is awarded.
Or maybe I'm just bad.

Don't worry about it. I've seen several S+'s and higher with only single digit wins.
just focus on beating rivals and murdering foxes and the wins will come eventually.
There are usually two good Super Boost spots per track except for Death Wind I and Silence, it's better to use it as soon as you are in one of those spots because you don't want to spend time you could be using boosting if you have a filled health bar. Still, to answer your question, it's always better to wait since the optimal spots are good because of how long they can get extended even after your bar depletes.
The game doesn't have a proper matchmaking, your rivals might be on the same rank as you but you're still thrown in the same lobby as people with way lower or higher ranks. The other problem is that having rank-based matchmaking wouldn't be a good idea because eventually everyone would have the problem of not having lobbies filled as fast as now.
Yeah, my wins were in GP and I basically got lucky with using the skyway right before the end and have yet to do that in 99 mode. Also the time I won I ranked or crashed out later in the GP which stings even more.

Whatever is more comfortable to you, just remember that the boost panels ignore the wind so if you're driving at an angle, they will correct your course, in that part you can strafe to keep yourself steady while the boost ends.
I appreciate the autistic troony for getting every shitter and their mother into a Fox thinking it's an auto-win. It feels like breakaway lone Foxes are less common than they were last week because four or five are always jockeying and pressuring each other early race.
Am I doing this right as Stingray? The first and last marked turns can both technically be done by fluttering accel, but they come out so wide that I seem to lose more time that way than just not having accel held down. Best practice time is 2'06"72, I only boost at the start of the race, at the point marked and use the rest at the end.
This is pretty much what I do except I like to boost across the gravel straightaway where it bends, but I never tried boosting anywhere else so I don't know if it's optimal.
If you mean at the bottom of the image, I boost earlier so I lose less time reaccelerating to 478. You can make that bend with just drifting from the edge of the right gravel pit, so I don't lose any speed there. You need to slow down a little for the turn after anyway, so I think the boost there would be a little unoptimal
take the hairpin turn mashing the gas instead of fully letting off of it. In fact never let off the gas outside of mashing, you're using the Stingray, you can get away with that.
What's the best way to get 5 KOs in a single race and the double KO? Even if I try and hunt grey bumpers, I don't come across enough smoking ones during a race and if I try to kill them from full health, other drivers just steal the kill.
If not mistaken, neither pro tracks, team battles or prix count for those. Seemed like that to me.
It literally means races completed within the game mode called "F-ZERO 99." Grand Prix, Mini Prix, Pro Tracks, and Team Battles are all considered separate game modes from F-ZERO 99.

Best i can manage (stingray) is completely releasing accel and drifting, i still hit the last wall before the straight but can manage an angle where boost can somewhat make up for it
You can drive on the electric barriers for about the width of one vehicle before you hit the actual bounce area. So sharp 90° turn left, skirt along on both walls if you have to, then 90° right. Straight across instead of zig-zag, as far as it's possible at least.

KO detection is a bit finnicky? and even getting opportunities is a matter of luck, which makes goose’s game plan pretty volatile.
Stop wasting all your meter trying to fish for KOs, pick off stragglers when the chance presents itself, and you should find yourself getting good ranks and a pretty much guaranteed top 3 machine bonus every time.
Trying to get into this game with my minimal playtime of SNES-Zero. Can someone give me some tips? I have no idea when I should use the bumper slide or what the frick the timing is for the head start.

Depends on your vehicle. Blue Falcon and Golden Fox are kinda bad with it because they have poor grip, so if you drift while holding accelerate they slide away. Try getting into something called "blast turning." Basically, mashing accelerate as you turn. This gives you the extra control you get from not being at max speed, while still maintaining some of said speed thanks to intermittently accelerating. Aside from that, for extra tight turns you're going to want to stop accelerating entirely while also drifting. Doing so on Falcon or Fox is also fine since they won't slide if you aren't accelerating. >the timing is for the head start
Depends on your vehicle's acceleration. For Stingray, which has the slowest accel, it's right around when the third dot appears before Ready. For Fox, which has the fastest accel, it's right before Go.
Sorry anon. Don't worry much about the timing at the start of the race, just make sure you don't smoke at the beginning. Other than that, learn to de-accelerate for an instant on sharper turns and always keep the strafe buttons in mind, they're better to reposition yourself instead of pressing left or right.

Fox will fall off once longer, harder maps are implemented. It already struggles with stamina on certain maps, long-con or endurance machines like Goose or Stingray will overtake it on those. The Fox can sprint but it can't marathon.

Are you seriously telling me that you AREN'T already holding back on EVERY ramp? Why? Literally the only vehicle that doesn't benefit from increased airtime is Stingray. There's only 1 ramp in the entire game right now that you should NOT hold back on and it's the one in that particular funnel so you can land on the boost.
By the time that happens you would already be past the gravel, also even then, why don’t they just engineer their cars so that gravel doesn’t get into them

I'm new to the game. Am I supposed to avoid sliding (not drifting) at all cost? Like is playing optimally possible while full sending it, or am I supposed to utilise braking and letting go of the gas to get around corners? It seems that going around corners too fast will cause me to slide into the walls.

This is from like 9 days ago when he first started using him. Then he goes on to a Grand Prix and wins the first 2 races. He wasn't the machine he is today.
I'm A- with only one win from my first night playing. And that was in a grand prix so i didnt even get an official Fzero 99 win and color unlock. I've gotten second and third plenty of times since but always choke any opportunities at first and it gets progressively harder as I'm consistently doing better than rivals and ranking up.
Stingray and Fox generally avoid combat, while Falcon and especially Goose try to put more focus on it as they have an easier time recovering
So there are four main ways to win: >play a perfect Fox >play a perfect Stingray >get a lucky kill that lets you constantly boost on the final lap >get fortunate with skyway boosts so that you get at least 2 at just the right spot over the duration of the race
That's how I play some races too
I boost at the start of Mute City and then never unless I frick up or I KO someone.
My gameplan is staying around 30s catching skyways, and taking after the offroad shortcut. I don't need to boost through the offroad shortcut since 9 times out of 10 someone will bump me back to Stingray top speed
It's my most consistent strat as Stingray for Mute which is the track I like the least as it with Death Wind
I don't have a problem with people figuring out the game and playing to their best ability, but the problem is figuring it out for yourself and remaining competitive. I took a step back and starting thinking about what specifically I was doing wrong and now I'm enjoying the game more. Also the tracks are becoming boring and they need to release the new ones.
Man that's every vaguely competitive game ever made. People act like in the good old days there was a culture difference and people didn't play to win but the actual difference is that with social media and youtube and all that shit, winning "meta' strategies proliferate a game in literal days.

F-Zero 99 was the first time I played any game in the series and I love it so I decided to check out some of the other games.
So far I've only played the SNES game and GX and I gotta say, I really don't like GX despite that apparently being the fan favourite.
What I like about 99 and the SNES one is how you have to carefully dodge other cars or machines or whatever you wanna call them while GX just seems to be about going fast with not much else.
I know about all the advanced techniques but at least in (non-speedrunning) single player, they don't even seem to matter since going faster doesn't help you reach first place due to the ridiculous rubberbanding.
The camera angle is either way too close or angled too far down which results in the tracks being mostly straight lines to compensate.
And while I'm not entirely sure if this is an emulator issue or if it happens on original hardware as well I have experienced several physics issues, like my car randomly touching the grond, resulting in me being stopped like I was hitting a wall or outright being thrown off the track. Some of the character themes are amazing though and the story mode is fun.
Racers need three tickets to enter a grand prix, as many of you already know. But what is the ideal way to get those tickets? How can you be sure you have enough?

honestly, Fire Field is going to absolutely annihilate Stingray more than any other car with how it's balanced in fzero 99 atm. FOUR sharp hairpins every lap murdering its speed when it can only afford to boost once per lap because of its horrible recovery and massive boost cost. literally any other car leaves it in the dust there since they have the resources to keep boosting/accelerate for more than a single lap.

Starting this game as a Blue Falcon main makes me feel like I was playing with training weights on the whole time or something. Several dozen races with 0 wins, and scarce Top 10 finishes. Finally tried branching out and giving other vehicles a shot and now I've gotten two 1st place finishes in ten races.
What's the best song? Mute City/Big Blue are amazing but I've heard them so much over the years, I really like Port Town and Fire Field

I'm watching him for the first time, that driving is downright insane, not only because he knows the tracks perfectly, but also because of the way he feints the lucky bumpers.
Game is too simple. Most of the other players are children. If you learn how to control the golden fox and can master these simple art of visualizing the lanes that the bumpers are taking so you know where you can't be at certain time, you will win most races. A consequence of making the game casual.

I know that the fox kind of sucked in the original. But the way they chose to implement the fox in 99 is just so odd.
The high acceleration always used to be the fox's thing. And in 99 where everyone are expected to bump into shit way more often then in the original game, the high acceleration is already a lot better than it originally was.
But then they keep that high acceleration, swap the boost quantity system for the power/health boost system. And let the Fox recover to full power from zero health on a single recovery strip. Allowing the fox to do constant boosting every lap.

Most Fox for example are accustomed to 4 boosts per lap and thats enough to frontrun sometimes if uncontested, if there's no lucky bumper you'll be fine holding 1st
That guy does 5 boosts (at least on Lap 1), and he delays the 5th a bit so that he's on power down as he hits the refill, and refills there.
Can't do a single mistake playing like that but no one can catch you and no one's got the balls or knowledge to follow

Can you show me some kind of statement on this? Fzero GX was a player choice game reacing over 1.5 million sales which puts its sales numbers above fzero x thats estimated around 1.1 million. I cant help but feel I've suddenly started seeing people saying GX killed the franchise and the only proof seems to be that someone else said it in the last thread.
The 1,5 million sales was Nagoshi coping. The fact that the game never appeared in the Nintendo's financial briefing means that it didn't crack the 1 million mark.
But what really killed the franchise was the GBA game.
It's a known fact that the first game did the best and while X and GX didn't do terribly they still failed to match or do even better than the first game like so many series, namely Mario Kart for which Nintendo saw the two competing for the same space. That's why I said "partly" because GX did send Nintendo down the path of creating the anime and its GBA games in a desperate attempt bring the franchise back from irrelevancy, but it didn't work. F-Zero has some really passionate fans, but people tend to forget all the stuff that led to the series death and think Nintendo just dropped the series for no reason when the biggest reason was that it was failing to capture an audience in the same way their other games were.
none of these really seems concrete enough to say GX killed the series. Even partly since it sounds like even X didnt do great nor did various other related material.
Neither game did as well as the first one. That's the point. It's not really directly their fault, but Nintendo saw their other series doing better and better with each installment, especially Mario Kart, and figured that F-zero just wasn't working as a concept despite X and GX selling well enough under any other circumstances. They tried to broaden F-Zero's appeal especially in Japan with the anime and GBA games, but that didn't work so they gave up.
Ignore them. The real reason F-Zero died is because the devs considered GX a complete game and couldn't come up with any improvement ideas to justify making a new title.

Learn where to use your boost and practice hitting those boost pads, that should at least prevent you from getting the succ.
Thanks for the pointers friends, I've been trying my best to hit all boosts and use mine for the gravel but I still lag behind the pack. I think it's mostly due to me getting fricked over in or simply not knowing how to do the starting section well. I'll try to apply myself more and use the skyway effectively.
I've yet to get the hang of getting kills. Feels inconsistent to me. But I imagine having a big energy bar is very helpful for getting past death wind.

I only get kills that I aimed for with the gray bumpers, which useful for GP. Killing other players is completely accidental. Seems to me like the destroying even the bumpers is way too finicky in the sense of them actually gettin destroyed and who the kill is awarded.

Save usually. Unless you have excess boost that is going to be wasted otherwise on the final lap.
There are usually two good Super Boost spots per track except for Death Wind I and Silence, it's better to use it as soon as you are in one of those spots because you don't want to spend time you could be using boosting if you have a filled health bar. Still, to answer your question, it's always better to wait since the optimal spots are good because of how long they can get extended even after your bar depletes.

The game doesn't have a proper matchmaking, your rivals might be on the same rank as you but you're still thrown in the same lobby as people with way lower or higher ranks. The other problem is that having rank-based matchmaking wouldn't be a good idea because eventually everyone would have the problem of not having lobbies filled as fast as now.

Yeah, my wins were in GP and I basically got lucky with using the skyway right before the end and have yet to do that in 99 mode. Also the time I won I ranked or crashed out later in the GP which stings even more.

I think you still need to be first. But it's easier to do in team fights in theory because teamfight doesn't have any bumpers except lucky bumpers.

You absolutely do not want to drive against the wind in death wind. Use the wind to your advantage to push you into the boosters.
Whatever is more comfortable to you, just remember that the boost panels ignore the wind so if you're driving at an angle, they will correct your course, in that part you can strafe to keep yourself steady while the boost ends.
If you have 30 or more wins you should only get to play with people who also have 30 or more wins

I appreciate the autistic troony for getting every shitter and their mother into a Fox thinking it's an auto-win. It feels like breakaway lone Foxes are less common than they were last week because four or five are always jockeying and pressuring each other early race.
So we're dealing with pic?
Am I doing this right as Stingray? The first and last marked turns can both technically be done by fluttering accel, but they come out so wide that I seem to lose more time that way than just not having accel held down. Best practice time is 2'06"72, I only boost at the start of the race, at the point marked and use the rest at the end.
This is pretty much what I do except I like to boost across the gravel straightaway where it bends, but I never tried boosting anywhere else so I don't know if it's optimal.
If you mean at the bottom of the image, I boost earlier so I lose less time reaccelerating to 478. You can make that bend with just drifting from the edge of the right gravel pit, so I don't lose any speed there. You need to slow down a little for the turn after anyway, so I think the boost there would be a little unoptimal
Yeah, the way you do it is probably better. I just like the feeling of boosting when nobody else is and passing them.
take the hairpin turn mashing the gas instead of fully letting off of it. In fact never let off the gas outside of mashing, you're using the Stingray, you can get away with that.

What's the best way to get 5 KOs in a single race and the double KO? Even if I try and hunt grey bumpers, I don't come across enough smoking ones during a race and if I try to kill them from full health, other drivers just steal the kill.

Best i can manage (stingray) is completely releasing accel and drifting, i still hit the last wall before the straight but can manage an angle where boost can somewhat make up for it

You can drive on the electric barriers for about the width of one vehicle before you hit the actual bounce area. So sharp 90° turn left, skirt along on both walls if you have to, then 90° right. Straight across instead of zig-zag, as far as it's possible at least.

Try switching to falcon and see if you improve.
KO detection is a bit finnicky? and even getting opportunities is a matter of luck, which makes goose’s game plan pretty volatile.
Stop wasting all your meter trying to fish for KOs, pick off stragglers when the chance presents itself, and you should find yourself getting good ranks and a pretty much guaranteed top 3 machine bonus every time.

Trying to get into this game with my minimal playtime of SNES-Zero. Can someone give me some tips? I have no idea when I should use the bumper slide or what the frick the timing is for the head start.

Depends on your vehicle. Blue Falcon and Golden Fox are kinda bad with it because they have poor grip, so if you drift while holding accelerate they slide away. Try getting into something called "blast turning." Basically, mashing accelerate as you turn. This gives you the extra control you get from not being at max speed, while still maintaining some of said speed thanks to intermittently accelerating. Aside from that, for extra tight turns you're going to want to stop accelerating entirely while also drifting. Doing so on Falcon or Fox is also fine since they won't slide if you aren't accelerating.

Depends on your vehicle's acceleration. For Stingray, which has the slowest accel, it's right around when the third dot appears before Ready. For Fox, which has the fastest accel, it's right before Go.
Sorry anon. Don't worry much about the timing at the start of the race, just make sure you don't smoke at the beginning. Other than that, learn to de-accelerate for an instant on sharper turns and always keep the strafe buttons in mind, they're better to reposition yourself instead of pressing left or right.

Fox will fall off once longer, harder maps are implemented. It already struggles with stamina on certain maps, long-con or endurance machines like Goose or Stingray will overtake it on those. The Fox can sprint but it can't marathon.

Are you seriously telling me that you AREN'T already holding back on EVERY ramp? Why? Literally the only vehicle that doesn't benefit from increased airtime is Stingray. There's only 1 ramp in the entire game right now that you should NOT hold back on and it's the one in that particular funnel so you can land on the boost.
Stingray still benefits from it to an extent because there's less chance of getting bumped in the air.

I'm new to the game. Am I supposed to avoid sliding (not drifting) at all cost? Like is playing optimally possible while full sending it, or am I supposed to utilise braking and letting go of the gas to get around corners? It seems that going around corners too fast will cause me to slide into the walls.

Yeah don't slide. Release accel and repress to gain traction. Go into practice mode and test curves against your ghost.
Always take ramps and always hold back (down) for more airtime. Ramps boost your speed up to a maximum of 278 kph while airborne.

I'm A- with only one win from my first night playing. And that was in a grand prix so i didnt even get an official Fzero 99 win and color unlock. I've gotten second and third plenty of times since but always choke any opportunities at first and it gets progressively harder as I'm consistently doing better than rivals and ranking up.

How do I get first place ? There's too many cars
Stingray and Fox generally avoid combat, while Falcon and especially Goose try to put more focus on it as they have an easier time recovering
So there are four main ways to win:
>play a perfect Fox
>play a perfect Stingray
>get a lucky kill that lets you constantly boost on the final lap
>get fortunate with skyway boosts so that you get at least 2 at just the right spot over the duration of the race
Or you can play like this.

In the Golden Fox you can boost anytime you want.

My gameplan is staying around 30s catching skyways, and taking after the offroad shortcut. I don't need to boost through the offroad shortcut since 9 times out of 10 someone will bump me back to Stingray top speed
It's my most consistent strat as Stingray for Mute which is the track I like the least as it with Death Wind
Finally got my GP Win! Now i can finally give the grind a rest and just give the GP an occasional shot with the other cars

For real. That first weekend was so much fun. Now every time I see some guy with 99+ wins I just roll my eyes.
I don't have a problem with people figuring out the game and playing to their best ability, but the problem is figuring it out for yourself and remaining competitive. I took a step back and starting thinking about what specifically I was doing wrong and now I'm enjoying the game more. Also the tracks are becoming boring and they need to release the new ones.

F-Zero 99 was the first time I played any game in the series and I love it so I decided to check out some of the other games.
So far I've only played the SNES game and GX and I gotta say, I really don't like GX despite that apparently being the fan favourite.
What I like about 99 and the SNES one is how you have to carefully dodge other cars or machines or whatever you wanna call them while GX just seems to be about going fast with not much else.
I know about all the advanced techniques but at least in (non-speedrunning) single player, they don't even seem to matter since going faster doesn't help you reach first place due to the ridiculous rubberbanding.
The camera angle is either way too close or angled too far down which results in the tracks being mostly straight lines to compensate.
And while I'm not entirely sure if this is an emulator issue or if it happens on original hardware as well I have experienced several physics issues, like my car randomly touching the grond, resulting in me being stopped like I was hitting a wall or outright being thrown off the track.
Some of the character themes are amazing though and the story mode is fun.
Anyway, thanks for reading my drunken blog post.

Racers need three tickets to enter a grand prix, as many of you already know. But what is the ideal way to get those tickets? How can you be sure you have enough?
The first thing to do is be sure to open the F-Zero 99 game once per day. Occasionally, you'll be rewarded free tickets, especially during a Grand Prix!
The next method is to enter races featuring the Pro Tracks! These appear among the rotating modes of the game, so be sure to keep an open eye.
Remember that the GP and Mini-Prix are the only ways to get on the leaderboard, so be sure to race fast and race often!

honestly, Fire Field is going to absolutely annihilate Stingray more than any other car with how it's balanced in fzero 99 atm. FOUR sharp hairpins every lap murdering its speed when it can only afford to boost once per lap because of its horrible recovery and massive boost cost. literally any other car leaves it in the dust there since they have the resources to keep boosting/accelerate for more than a single lap.
