Also from day 1 people recognized that the premise of the series was a complete ripoff, selling kids a game that required extra hardware and merchandise to get the complete experience
People hated Gen 3 because it implemented the first and most permanent Dex cut, and to this day has the most bullshit National Dex, you need six games and two of them are on the fricking Gamecube (and came out so late that they started teasing Gen 4)

The 3DS games showed cracks, but decades of good games up to that point left GF with enough goodwill that people still accepted the 3DS games, even while acknowledging they were steps down. The Switch games being utter shit solidified that, no, Pokemon will not be getting better and will just continue to get worse.
