Fallout 4's human models are in the deepest parts of the uncanny valley. Pretty much everything in the game looks like it's made of wax or plastic and it bugs the shit out of me. I started Morrowind up recently and have been struck by how much I prefer the janky old models. Fallout 4 takes every step imaginable to make itself the most boring game to exist. It's amazing how all the companions are more interesting before they become neutered when you eventually solve their problem.

Basically. The game was essentially a failed experiment the studio sunk a ton of money into and there's no possible way they can salvage it with modding tools and certainly no one will buy DLC for it.
I feel like this Fallout 4 update is a lot like CDPR rushing out an announcement that they're getting started on Witcher 4 immediately after Cyberpunk launched in such a dogshit state. They just had to shift people to something that was remembered and regarded more fondly because otherwise they're essentially just stuck in this years-long limbo of having to very, very slowly try and patch their shit release into somewhat-playable state while interest in it rapidly dies.
So if Bethesda was force to just say "Um hey guys we came up with this patch for Starfield so textures don't flicker and there's some more outfits!", people would just laugh and forget about it completely.
I just cheat and give my self all the crafting components. I'm not going to spend hours scavenging the wastes for bottles of glue Todd. That's not exploration that's tedious.
That, and the fact that they don't even fricking do anything. Building settlements up to certain points should open up new quests or resources or something, but instead they're just... there.
That's why I'm hoping the Horizon mod is decent in this regard. I have spent time with it but there are settlers to level and send out on missions and shit

This is why I think Sim Settlements 2 is probably one of the best mods ever made. Aside from just being able to drop pre-designed plots for housing, resources, entertainment, shops, and defense, that automatically assign settlement members to them and take care of the resource stuff, you get a lot of real quest content that eventually lets you assign NPCs to run settlements for you, which allows them to auto-build and upgrade and expand those settlements without you having to actually manually do it (but also you can manually change them or add on to them).
It doesn't make it perfect, but it does turn the settlement stuff into something resembling it's own game system rather than just being nothing.
I like SS2 conceptually, but some of the voice acting sucks and even on a vanilla setup the game literally just cannot handle what it wants to do, let alone a heavily modded one that already has some performance hits.

It's not the simple for Sanctuary, Alot of those buildings have built in LODs so if you delete them, they'll still show up from a mile away and then suddenly disappear when you get closer.
I really don't know why they didn't have a special workshop function at each settlement with pre-war buildings where you can spend resources to patch them up.
I can't believe Fallout 4, which was supposed to have the stepping stone to a good settlement system had way better settlements than Starfield, a game which seems to be way more about settlements that Fallout 4. How the frick did they mess up so badly? Even Fallout 76 had better "settlements".
Starfield isn't about settlements at all. There's no quest or gameplay benefit to making one. It's like they ported the system over but had to cut the relevant questline for time.

I was playing (modded) FO4 literally up until I couldn't launch it today because lol update fricked everything. It's not really very good if you're looking for a coherent roleplaying experience or narrative, or any sort of consistent tone. Because it has none of those things.
What it does have is a basic gameplay system of finding items, building weird things, and shooting various flavors of enemies as perks make that more and more wacky. There's no point at which you will ever feel like you're actually fighting for survival in a wasteland or engaging with real complex faction dynamics or meaningful conflict, which I guess is what a "real Fallout game" would be.
Unfortunately, I didn't have it set to "Only update if I launch the game on Steam" so Steam just plowed right over my restrictions and updated it on it's own. So yes, and now I'm stuck either manually trying to download and roll back the files myself, or waiting for a patcher that does it.

I've never played a sex-focused mod setup and probably wouldn't because it's a lot of effort just for porn, but Survival and/or hardcore modpacks have always been very weird for me in FO4 because like, no matter how dark and realistic and minimal they make the HUD and graphics and how scarce they make resources and shit, you're still playing Fallout 4 which means you still are going to be beating up HP-bloated enemies that can always see and target you even when you can't see them.
SS2 is a broken mod and I wouldn't recommend using it, unless you don't mind the crashes it will eventually cause.
I find either SS usually leads to a major issue as you have longer playthroughs

SS2 has many dirty edits, and scripts with broken properties on them, which I suspect is from the mod author trying to forcefully compile something that wouldn't want to do that in the creation kit.

Honestly the new Creation Content quests is pretty cool. It adds a whole bunch of Enclave quests and some Pitt themed locations/Power armor. A solid 2-ish hour experience for free on xbox. Thanks Todd.
How many quests/new locations in the enclave stuff? I thought it was just a single CC quest to get the new PA off some raiders but others have said there's more to it that wasn't in any CC pack.
There's like 4 quests you get.
The biggest t of the new quests is the Secrets of the Enclave quest that has you finding a signal inside the Glowing Sea to find an Enclave base with a bunch of Enclave Power Armor and to kill the Enclave Colonel. There's also another one where you go to a furnace place (basically the Pitt homage) and you get a cool flamer and Raider Power Armor
There's a 3rd quest that's Halloween themed, but kinda meh
And then there's a final quest where you go back to the Glowing sea to find this escaped guy to get a legendary Tesla Cannon.
They're all free on the Bethesda Creation Content store, I just downloaded all the stuff that said "Free"
They work with your save, I was already level 42 and downloaded them and they started right up when I loaded in. 4 quests pop up immediately. 2 of them you have to start by listening to radio stations IIRC

How to get over the absolute dogshit early game? I played 2 characters through the whole game, but when I start a new character is just fricking boring, it's the same shitty early game until I get to level 10 or 15 and the cool quests start to show up and I have the ammo and resources to do them.
While I don't think it was worth breaking mods and delaying London I won't lie the Enclave armor and weapons are pretty fun (if broken with how easy it is to get them early as shit into the game, seriously I have XO2 Mark VI power armor, an almost fully upgraded heavy incinerator, a tesla canon, and plasma pistol with plenty of ammo for all of these weapons at level 12)

Was considering starting a fresh playthrough, wasn't sure what build/alignment to go for. I was going to do sniper and pro-institute but sniper builds are usually boring and broken. I always side with the Brotherhood and destroy the Institute and Railroad, so figured it'd be interesting to go in the opposite direction and destroy the Brotherhood instead just to see how it plays out. I think the Railroad and Institute are bunch of INSANE homosexual HIPPIES, but it's nice to do something different.
Sniping is just so satisfying because of VATS, feels good to crit shot something from two miles away or watch the bullet travel, though I did have a lot of fun with a melee build in New Vegas, honestly a melee build might be fun could pair it with a shotgun as well. I know shotguns are super broken as well, frankly any build can be broken with the right perks, I guess. Could just obliterate everything with shotguns up close, but playing a sneaky assassin type sniper sounds more fun. Then again, running around punching people and watching them explode and fly back is kind of neat as well.
I also wouldn't use power armor simply for RP purposes, as I'm siding against the BoS, not that you have to be in the BoS to use it, but it feels better to avoid using it, though you're probably gimping yourself by not using it, and BoS faction gets better power armor and upgrades for it, so that's the other reason I always sided with them, well that and I just think they're really cool, though in reality they're probably no better than the Enclave. I don't think any faction in Fallout is truly "good" as they all believe they can save the wasteland and rebuild society, but it's always with evil undertones and motives.

Melee sucks absolute ass in FO4. I'll give FO4 this, melee visually feels better because enemies actually react to getting hit but holy frick it's just an afterthought in ever other regard. This goes double for Unarmed which sucks because Unarmed is my favorite build in NV.

Stealth/Sniper builds are usually the most popular in general, look at Skyrim. Stealth Archer is still the most popular build, and what most people did for their first playthrough, not me though, I went CHAD FULL PLATE WARRIOR, and then later tried stealth archer out. Skyrim even has that slow motion animation that plays when you fire an arrow and can watch it fly through the air towards the target.
They're the funnest the game gets on higher difficulty where the risk and reward when sneaking is at it's highest. Hunting Rifle and Deliverer are great.

No, they can't. Plenty of games with fricked up roads have working cars. What Bethesda can't do is physics beyond giving horizontal speed and vertical acceleration to objects. You need the road to physically push the wheels up and down, and the movement of the wheels to push the suspension up and down, and the movement of the suspension to move the car body up and down otherwise you get a static object that glides over the terrain, like every vehicle mod I've seen

Basically. The game was essentially a failed experiment the studio sunk a ton of money into and there's no possible way they can salvage it with modding tools and certainly no one will buy DLC for it.
I feel like this Fallout 4 update is a lot like CDPR rushing out an announcement that they're getting started on Witcher 4 immediately after Cyberpunk launched in such a dogshit state. They just had to shift people to something that was remembered and regarded more fondly because otherwise they're essentially just stuck in this years-long limbo of having to very, very slowly try and patch their shit release into somewhat-playable state while interest in it rapidly dies.
So if Bethesda was force to just say "Um hey guys we came up with this patch for Starfield so textures don't flicker and there's some more outfits!", people would just laugh and forget about it completely.

That, and the fact that they don't even fricking do anything. Building settlements up to certain points should open up new quests or resources or something, but instead they're just... there.
That's why I'm hoping the Horizon mod is decent in this regard. I have spent time with it but there are settlers to level and send out on missions and shit
I downloaded the "walled settlements" mod, slapped together like two hundred of the turrets that don't require power and just focused on Sanctuary, the Castle and some other places, like collecting all the night dresses for the ghoul town
This is why I think Sim Settlements 2 is probably one of the best mods ever made. Aside from just being able to drop pre-designed plots for housing, resources, entertainment, shops, and defense, that automatically assign settlement members to them and take care of the resource stuff, you get a lot of real quest content that eventually lets you assign NPCs to run settlements for you, which allows them to auto-build and upgrade and expand those settlements without you having to actually manually do it (but also you can manually change them or add on to them).
It doesn't make it perfect, but it does turn the settlement stuff into something resembling it's own game system rather than just being nothing.
SS2 is a broken mod and I wouldn't recommend using it, unless you don't mind the crashes it will eventually cause.
I find either SS usually leads to a major issue as you have longer playthroughs
I like SS2 conceptually, but some of the voice acting sucks and even on a vanilla setup the game literally just cannot handle what it wants to do, let alone a heavily modded one that already has some performance hits.

It's not the simple for Sanctuary, Alot of those buildings have built in LODs so if you delete them, they'll still show up from a mile away and then suddenly disappear when you get closer.

I was playing (modded) FO4 literally up until I couldn't launch it today because lol update fricked everything. It's not really very good if you're looking for a coherent roleplaying experience or narrative, or any sort of consistent tone. Because it has none of those things.
What it does have is a basic gameplay system of finding items, building weird things, and shooting various flavors of enemies as perks make that more and more wacky. There's no point at which you will ever feel like you're actually fighting for survival in a wasteland or engaging with real complex faction dynamics or meaningful conflict, which I guess is what a "real Fallout game" would be.

Unfortunately, I didn't have it set to "Only update if I launch the game on Steam" so Steam just plowed right over my restrictions and updated it on it's own. So yes, and now I'm stuck either manually trying to download and roll back the files myself, or waiting for a patcher that does it.
I've never played a sex-focused mod setup and probably wouldn't because it's a lot of effort just for porn, but Survival and/or hardcore modpacks have always been very weird for me in FO4 because like, no matter how dark and realistic and minimal they make the HUD and graphics and how scarce they make resources and shit, you're still playing Fallout 4 which means you still are going to be beating up HP-bloated enemies that can always see and target you even when you can't see them.
I don't think I've ever had any issues with it? Certainly no crashes related to it.
SS2 has many dirty edits, and scripts with broken properties on them, which I suspect is from the mod author trying to forcefully compile something that wouldn't want to do that in the creation kit.
It's basically a ticking time bomb of crashes.

Honestly the new Creation Content quests is pretty cool. It adds a whole bunch of Enclave quests and some Pitt themed locations/Power armor. A solid 2-ish hour experience for free on xbox. Thanks Todd.

How many quests/new locations in the enclave stuff? I thought it was just a single CC quest to get the new PA off some raiders but others have said there's more to it that wasn't in any CC pack.
There's like 4 quests you get.
The biggest t of the new quests is the Secrets of the Enclave quest that has you finding a signal inside the Glowing Sea to find an Enclave base with a bunch of Enclave Power Armor and to kill the Enclave Colonel. There's also another one where you go to a furnace place (basically the Pitt homage) and you get a cool flamer and Raider Power Armor
There's a 3rd quest that's Halloween themed, but kinda meh
And then there's a final quest where you go back to the Glowing sea to find this escaped guy to get a legendary Tesla Cannon.
They're all free on the Bethesda Creation Content store, I just downloaded all the stuff that said "Free"

They work with your save, I was already level 42 and downloaded them and they started right up when I loaded in. 4 quests pop up immediately. 2 of them you have to start by listening to radio stations IIRC

Was considering starting a fresh playthrough, wasn't sure what build/alignment to go for. I was going to do sniper and pro-institute but sniper builds are usually boring and broken. I always side with the Brotherhood and destroy the Institute and Railroad, so figured it'd be interesting to go in the opposite direction and destroy the Brotherhood instead just to see how it plays out. I think the Railroad and Institute are bunch of INSANE homosexual HIPPIES, but it's nice to do something different.
Sniping is just so satisfying because of VATS, feels good to crit shot something from two miles away or watch the bullet travel, though I did have a lot of fun with a melee build in New Vegas, honestly a melee build might be fun could pair it with a shotgun as well. I know shotguns are super broken as well, frankly any build can be broken with the right perks, I guess. Could just obliterate everything with shotguns up close, but playing a sneaky assassin type sniper sounds more fun. Then again, running around punching people and watching them explode and fly back is kind of neat as well.
I also wouldn't use power armor simply for RP purposes, as I'm siding against the BoS, not that you have to be in the BoS to use it, but it feels better to avoid using it, though you're probably gimping yourself by not using it, and BoS faction gets better power armor and upgrades for it, so that's the other reason I always sided with them, well that and I just think they're really cool, though in reality they're probably no better than the Enclave. I don't think any faction in Fallout is truly "good" as they all believe they can save the wasteland and rebuild society, but it's always with evil undertones and motives.

Melee sucks absolute ass in FO4. I'll give FO4 this, melee visually feels better because enemies actually react to getting hit but holy frick it's just an afterthought in ever other regard. This goes double for Unarmed which sucks because Unarmed is my favorite build in NV.

Stealth/Sniper builds are usually the most popular in general, look at Skyrim. Stealth Archer is still the most popular build, and what most people did for their first playthrough, not me though, I went CHAD FULL PLATE WARRIOR, and then later tried stealth archer out. Skyrim even has that slow motion animation that plays when you fire an arrow and can watch it fly through the air towards the target.
They're the funnest the game gets on higher difficulty where the risk and reward when sneaking is at it's highest. Hunting Rifle and Deliverer are great.

They could expand on the faction rep they just barely touched on with Starfield. A large hub for law and order, another for raider anarchy. Ghouls could be mistrusted in both camps, but it's easier to gain rep with raiders as might makes right.

True, there are two mods for NV that make the gameplay really good were Awesome Crippling/Stagger Effects were they basically hold their face/legs/arms when you shoot at them and they'll roll on the ground like in the GTA games.
