Odyssey is really something, man. Not only is the reconstruction of important Greek sites like Athens, Olympia, Corinth etc extremely good(sparta sucked tho) but you can analyze the economic activity of each village

At at least required a modicum of skill, the new shit is just hoping your gears numbers beat the enemies, whether it’s combat or stealth, and it’s just hollow there’s nothing to it, before if I countered at the right time I could do a move that led into a quadruple execution where I get one guy go stab his buddy and finish him off with the hidden gun.

Origins encourages Predator Arrow spam and then it's dodge attacking or spamming heavy attacks on repeat to stunlock your enemy.
Odyssey encourages Rush Assassinating 5 people on repeat until you get detected and then one-shotting them all with Hero's Strike or just iframing everything with Fury of the Bloodline or other skills until you get something like Hero's Strike back for harder targets.
Valhalla encourages immediately running at the enemies and mashing attack while dodging to abuse iframes if you see anyone go for an attack and then repeatedly mashing attack. The stamina system is pointless as light attacks grant you more stamina than you expend, and come endgame you have Gungnir/Spear of Leonidas paired with the Gae Bolg from the Wrath of the Druids to completely break combat. You don't even need Gae Bolg to break combat, just spears are enough.
The only way Valhalla combat is hard is if you don't use spears/hammers/axes/claymores/atgeirs/OH swords/scythes but why in the hell would you? Even OH swords and atgeirs are ass most of the time but no one should be using flails, sicles, seaxes, or Dane Axes, they're ass.
people always clamor about the parkour in both dying light and AC but to me they are more or less just the veggies of each game and i groan any time the games make me do climbing puzzles with the mechanics. as soon as i get the grappling hook/glider in DL1/2 i stop traversing with parkour because it just boils down to climbing invisible ladders, and in AC i run everywhere with the horse or fast travel, the masturbationary discourse around the parkour in these games needs to stop lol

Valhalla had the ability to do it since launch but then added in a warning message like a year later that goes "You shouldn't enable this as the game isn't balanced around it!" when it very clearly was balanced around it existing since EXP is scaled based on enemy type rather than level so going to 300+ areas at level 20 gives you the same EXP as fighting in level 20 areas.

They didn't, the vikings are constantly considered the bad guys all game and it regularly has Christians insulting them, wary of them, and you find tons and tons of notes in ransacked or abandoned homes essentially saying "Frick the vikings" in so many words and how they're either going off to join a local militia to defend their land or running with their family. Eivor literally sides with the Anglo Saxons and helps the Templar Order become a thing because of her not killing the Anglo Saxon king and leader of the Order of the Ancients. She even wishes him well in the epilogue before heading off to America.
Sure, it tries to whitewash the vikings somewhat by making Eivor sometimes discourage killing, and Eivor herself didn't murder civvies as a pillaging viking for some reason, but even Eivor joins in on the "Haha, dumb Christians" jokes and is regularly antagonistic towards the Anglo Saxons and their religion unless they come to Ravensthorpe or one of her friends converts. Even for a friend that converts she ribs him for it in the epilogue.

it's a complete side story. i beat the game without going into midgard the 2nd time because i was bored senseless with the whole setting. its like those shitty drug level jokes in far cry taken way too far. to me the entire game is the viking plot and then the ending with basim getting freed from the isu machine. it just works. you can cut out the entire convoluted isu plot, and you lose what? you lose some context on why basim wants to get out of the machine he's being kept in. the whole inclusion of the isu subplot into the main game was done atrociously bad. the scifi elements of the IP are already its most mind numbing part, and i groan any time i have to interact with it

I've seen people complain about the length of Layla's intro part in Origins but not really anything else, and in Odyssey you go so long between her segments I've never seen anyone have an issue with her there. Same deal with her segments in Valhalla because she does all her stuff within the Animus due to glitches and you have to manually pull out of it when you want to. The only time it pulls you out is to go to the Isu Animus thing.

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins was only three years prior, Onimusha Dawn of Souls was in 2006 so six years prior but still in recent memory, Ninja Gaiden was alive that whole time, Yakuza 1 and 2 were on the tail end of the PS2 with 3 and 4 being out on the PS3 around that time, and I'm sure there's more. He was also probably talking about how in general a lot of games are set in Japan.
