>fantasy setting is actually a sci-fi setting
I love this twist. Any more ideas for shaking up player expectations?

Scifi setting is.actually a fantasy setting.
FPBP. Those scientists and engineers? Literal wizards. The robots? Golems powered by talmudic magic. The advanced machines? Mystical alchemedic contraptions. The laser guns and power swords? Ergonomic wands and enchanted normal swords. The AI? It's not artificial at all it's just the spirit of the object
Technology is the physical manifestation of knowledge (in the gnostic sense of the word)
>characters become aware they're in a fictional story
Pretty hard to pull off, but I found it fun in The Dark Tower and The Neverending Story.
Western fantasy setting is actually a hidden realm in a Chinese fantasy setting.
Could be good. Any examples?
No, this was just a random idea I had one day during an episode of autistic world building. A powerful fallen immortal tries to recreate humans to gather power and eventually act as vessels for its resurrection, and ends up creating all the other fantasy races on the way to getting a close-enough replica of humanity.

nta but it just made me think about how China is building 1:1 replicas of famous cities from around Europe so they can enjoy larping as Europeans without having to deal with the New Europeans. Imagine living in Paris your entire life and then discovering that you're actually in a The Village-style theme park/ zoo for wealthy Chinese families.
Imagine living your entire life in a perfect replica Paris. You go about your day eating buttered croissants and drinking coffee and smokin cigarettes while cheating on your wife, only to discover that you were actually Chinese the whole time.
>so they can provide pork barrel projects to their failing construction companies to keep them afloat, keep employment high and also keep the GDP on fake growth
ftfy
Reminds me of some fanfic of there's a roman civilization on the other side of the AtLA world
It was absolute shit but could be cool if done right
I suppose Dragon Riders of Pern is technically a fantasy series that's actually a scifi series even though it's revealed at the onset that they are just neo Luddite human colonists on the dragon planet
Is Anne McCaffery the lady who turned out to be a pedo?
No.
I've never seen this twist, personally.
I've seen plenty of attempts, but major aspects of the setting prevented the work from connecting with science, so they remained fantastical.
I've had a medieval tech planet that thinks its in a fantasy setting because of an 'evil wizard' who's an insane psychic on a research mission who went full BBEG after touching an alien artifact, the pig orcs were originally just pigs.
>Any more ideas for shaking up player expectations?
Try being a good GM for once and make the game fun.
I ran a short series of adventures based on Poul Anderson's "The High Crusade," and it was a blast.
>"humans" in setting are actually non-humans
So THAT'S why everyone's faces were out of frame until the very last shot!
Twists are a poor substitute for substance
Snark is a poor substitute for wisdom, but here you are.
