Farthest Frontier

So, how is it? If it's shit, what else can I get my itch of a city builder with citizens that have their own homes/routines instead of slaving away 24/7?

ehh I'd say Free Cities is probably more /vst/ since it's all management

Yeah but Naked Ambition is fun, Free Cities is too violent

It's okay and enjoyable for one game, gets boring and frustrating on multiple playthroughs. Basically the same as all the other Banished spin offs, this one has some problems with the UI. Where its a pest to click stuff once your city is full, in particular roads etc are affected.

I have mixed feelings about this one.

On the one hand it feels like a really solid execution of the colony survival genre as popularized by Banished. If all you want is a Banished clone, then Farthest Frontiers does that extremely competently and even adds some cool gimmicks of its own. It's genuinely a good game with very few actual flaws.

On the other hand though, at the risk of sounding like a homosexual it does lack a soul and an identity. Yeah it's adding some mechanics that Banished didn't have, but it still feels like a game that plays it safe and just wants to do what Banished did except with a bit more spit and polish. When you look at titles like Against the Storm that takes the same formula and does something genuinely different with it, I keep thinking about what FF's USP would be and I can't think of one. Yeah crop rotation is cool but it's not going to sell you on the game on its own. And army management is a welcome addition but it's shallow and not very fleshed out compared to for example what Manor Lords is promising. In the end it's just another resource optimization game with nothing to shake up the old familiar gameplay.

Like I said, I don't mean to hate on the game because I really do think it's good. I just wish it tried to do more with the formula so you don't get bored after two games.

Have to agree. Farthest Frontier is well executed, but it takes zero risks.

Good start, but they haven't added anything 18 months so it's basically abandoned.

They've had an update like once every two months for the past year.

And what of consequence has been added?

The latest content update added bandit camps, crypts, and more varied weather types, along with a whole list of smaller fixes and tweaks. Why lie about this shit when you can just look up the patchnotes yourself?

Wrong. They've done a lot of improvements and content additions.
However, I'm still waiting a bit longer for it to be proper good.

this anon is right. they've barely added anything of real substance since early access launch.
End game and combat need a lot more content/work. but the worst thing is that it doesn't have banished population growth mechanics. you build houses and people just turn up. theres no need to worry about over pop. even when a group of people show up just give them houses.

      and
      >oooo rivers and bridges are too hard guys why would you want us to make rivers and bridges in a historical city builder with a focus on defence.

It is a better Banished. The biggest problems are the performance as well as the deformable terrain which lets you break the game by making stupid tower-defense mazes using the ground. Exploration and combat are lacking. These frickers are also rather slow at completing their game. They really haven't added THAT much over the past year. You'd think a game as simple as this would take maybe a couple of years at most from start to finish, but it's been like five already.

The combat in this game feels absolutely moronic and more akin to a zombie survival experience than fighting other humans. Except 8 zombies is enough to also carry away your entire economy
