Now that the dust has settled, is it finally time to admit Halo just wasn't that good?

Halo CE = the silent cartographer
      Halo 2 = outskirts
      Halo 3 = tsavo highway
      ODST = uplift reserve
      Reach = nightfall
      Halo 4 = nothing
      Halo 5 = blue team I guess
Halo infinite = pelican down (if you can call it a level?)

No it’s good. It just has the potential to be even better.

I liked the snow planet level. Forgot what it was called, but there's this part with two bridges where you fight a bunch of Covenant on. There's Mgalekgolos on the other bridge and the distance combined with their defensive AI made them hard to hit. It felt like a puzzle I had to solve which was actually refreshing to see.
It was very satisfying when I realized I can use Plasma Grenades to make their limb-heads exposed.

      >It felt like a puzzle

Interesting. I like when game make encounters that feel like puzzles. But with execution. It's surprisingly rare for games to do this.

      Should I play Halo then?

Sure, go ahead. I only played Combat Evolved so far, but if you enjoyed Half-Life, you'll enjoy it. They're somewhat similar in design.

          >but if you enjoyed Half-Life, you'll enjoy it. They're somewhat similar in design.

No. I hated half Life, and don't view it as puzzlelike in its encounters, so I guess I won't play Halo.

Not that anon. If you like puzzle-like design, play Halo. It's not very similar to Half-Life at all, beyond having a cinematic sci-fi story.
Halo is much more interesting for its gameplay.

That's basically the gameplay loop on Heroic/Legendary. Strategizing encounters and executing your plan.

Since the modkit released there have been so many kino mods for the workshop on MCC, ones I've played so far

    >Halo: Brutality Evolved

the half life style exploding gibs and gore is awesome, though I wish it was more fleshed out / you could shoot off specific limbs, also covenant literally exploding if tapped by your hog is a bit much, but very cool mod. The increased needler damage though is absolute fricking cancer and made me play this on heroic instead of legendary

    >Halo: Better With Friends

only levels for this right now are Assault on the Ctrl Room and Silent Cartographer, but bother are amazing, very polished, very high quality mod, highly recommend, makes the levels fresh and if you want to feel like part of the UNSC this mod is awesome

    >Cursed Halo

meme mod, the technical skill on display is impressive but it isn't funny and is often annoying to play, good for a couple levels

    >Combat Revolved

Very good mod, they go a bit too far with some aesthetic changes like on 343 guilty spark (the red lights are too much) but a lot of fun references for bookgays, new weapons are thoughtfuly implemented and not just tacked on for no reason, overall a mod that gives the entire campaign a fresh feel, great for long time veterens

    >(H1) Crash Site

It's that Macworld demo level, very cool showcase of what could've been, so short though not much to say, play it.

Next I will play Ruby Rebalanced which I am very excited for after I finish Halo 2 Uncut

Halo 3 mission 07: The Covenant is insanely good. You've got the homage to Silent Cartographer from CE, then the pine stuff and lastly the snowy area with TWO scarabs.

Halo CE: Truth and Reconciliation. Until Reach this was the only mission that had you break into an active Covenant ship and Bungie tried to remake that scenario for every new Halo game they worked on except ODST, before finally bringing it back successfully in Reach.
Halo 2: Outskirts. This was originally going to have a Covenant ship mission before it but got replaced with the Covenant bomb cutsecene when the level got cut. I liked the slice of modern Earth we got through this mission.
Halo 3: The Storm. The Ark and The Covenant are great, but something about that early game sandbox fight with the scarab in The Storm just sticks with me.
ODST: NMPD HQ. Trecherous rooftops and the fun of sniping jetpack brutes out of the sky or tricking them into jumping to thier deaths.
Reach: New Alexandria. Our first and last massively air to air dedicated mission in Halo with plenty of alternate objectives and areas to explore during the mission. The big turning point when the invading covenant have finally taken out enough of the UNSC for the evacuation efforts to now be pointless. This was orignally going to be followed up with a ground mission with a player controllable scarab, but it got scrapped rightb before release. Supposedly it was mostly working too.

I made a tier list of the trilogy levels.
Some notes: Uprising I like for story reasons more than for its gameplay, but what it does is just that good. The others I'm rating more objectively on gameplay.
The Halo: CE level "Halo" is one of the best Halo levels, so the levels that precede it says a lot about the strength of those levels.
I like The Library. Bungie used to have a tradition of putting at least 1 level in their games that is meant to troll the player, and The Library is that level. Looking at it from that perspective, it's funny and in line with their sense of humor.

      >Bungie used to have a tradition of putting at least 1 level in their games that is meant to troll the player,
According to the level designer who made Library, it was originally supposed to be the player starting at the top and traveling down to the Index in the Central shaft with giant open windows that let you see your progress through the tiers, but original xbox draw distsnce was too low and the geometry faded out so they walled the elevator shaft and reversed the progression which fricked with the intended pacing to the level.

I've heard that too, and it would have been cooler than what we got, but I don't think it would have changed it from being a troll-level gameplay wise. You'd still be spending a massive amount of time fighting flood.

          Anonymous

The troll isn't fighting the Flood. It's going through the same room sequence 4 times that were originally differentiated by scenery that is gone in the release.

I'll be frank, I'm not even entirely sure I believe Bungie when they say "they were really planning on doing this cool spiral staircase down into the vault".
These are guys that made non-euclidean mazes in Marathon, and levels like Colony Ship For Sale Cheap or Converted Church in Venice Italy.
Having at least 1 level that's tedious and confusing is their sense of humor.

I do because every Halo besides ODST was insane dev hell with them cutting and rearranging things about the games right up to the release deadline. Unless you discount every Bungie dev's first hand accounts across years.

Jason Jones is a funny guy. I've played Pathways Into Darkness, the Marathon series and Myth 1, and there's a side to Bungie that you get to see in those early games that gets a little more hidden in Halo. The oldguard were the kind of guys that would do things on purpose to mess with players.
The entire Arbiter storyline in 2, for as awesome as it is, is also in line with this shitposty kind of humor they have.

When you're first on the Halo in CE. The main thing that struck me, in part due to the open level, was that the AI reacted believably. No running in circles/getting stuck, while acting in tandem.

It's sad that no other FPS has matched Halo for its enemy AI. Even other games in the franchise.

1: Assault on the Control Room, long as shit and you get to drive a tank.

2: i still haven't played it, wasn't an xnog back in the day and for some reason i haven't even installed it on PC even though i own the mustard queef collection

3: The Ark, one of the best levels in the entire franchise imo, the marine banter makes the level for me.

Reach: Genuinely can't choose, New Alexandria's loop of "shoot down some banshees then infiltrate a random building" is incredibly fun and it has two fun easter eggs plus a cameo from cuck. Long Night of Solace has a kino firefight in the beach then you get to pilot a spaceship, and it ends with one of the best (worst?) sacrifices in all of gaylo, jorge genuinely thought he'd be ending the war or at the very least severely cripple the covenant, and not only did it NOT work, they retaliated by just fricking glassing everything. Exodus actually has a drought of magnum and DMR ammo so it would have been great if you were forced to defend yourself with just plasma weapons, but they unfortunately also give you needle rifles and those shit on the brutes harder than either of the other 3 headshot weapons, still, i love how the level starts cheering you up by making you meet with a group of ODST's that survived, but then you help them evacuate some civilians and the covenant shoots them down anyway, the whole level just makes you feel miserable lmoa.
