Favourite mission of this awesome game?
I just finished the Seelowe track of the Blitzkrieg campaign and I really enjoyed Unternehmen Tiger one, with the landing operations in Sweden.
Will probably start Barbarossa now

    Puzzle game, not strategy

You can complete missions using more than one approach, puzzles only have a single solution

Most hex games are puzzle-like in my opinion. Taking objectives under turn constraints and proper planning of panzer general-like games is the heart of the gameplay.

I enjoy how clean the smaller-scale desert rat/fox missions are, but the larger more complex Barbarossa and other Russian DLC missions fill me with dread

I have had this game for over a year now and every time I try to play it, I get so fricking frustrated on the first mission of every campaign. I then restart the campaign every time I reinstall. I've done the tutorial a few times now and this game just fricking wrecks me. I am very experienced with playing Panzer General, Panzer Corp 1 and 2, and Order of Battle. Those games are different a very easy compared to the meticulous move order you have to follow in this game. That said, it's frustration keeps me coming back. I'm going to reinstall and try again.

There can be some frustrating RNG at times, but there's no real punishment for restarting a mission and if you complete all your objectives you can reinforce quite a bit. Don't forget to take note of the big number next to a unit's portrait, it indicates the number of scenarios in which that unit will be participating. You don't need to worry too much about losses for a unit that won't appear in future scenarios

Started a new Victory in the West campaign on normal, I think this campaign should be easier than Blitzkrieg (I just have these two). I played I just beat Tunisia so I'm started to get into the groove I think.

I mean he's playing on Normal so the whole thing is going to be easy

I disagree that Normal mode is easy because I'm playing blind, not using walkthroughs. It's the same thing as Panzer Corps, first time playing a scenario is always harder no matter the difficulty. Really not enjoying the Italy scenarios very much. You have all these units and nothing to fight because all your troops are stuck in mountains or at bottlenecks with nowhere to move. I think the only hard part of this game is just knowing how quickly to move and where the enemy is, which is automatically easier once you replay a scenario. So I think difficulty just comes down to memorizing movements. Anyway, I just finished Road to Rimini and now I'm going to France in conference 3. This campaign tree system is confusing as hell by the way. Also what's the point in getting gold medals for scenarios other than achievement?

                >Also what's the point in getting gold medals for scenarios other than achievement?
The satisfaction that you actually completed all the objectives (which is also pretty much impossible to do without repeated attempts, so walkthroughs and 'going in blind' don't really matter)

Also, you can find a manual listing the scenario branches for the campaign in your game files. Many ahistorical paths require achieving certain optional objectives.

And the ahistorical paths are supposed to be more difficult than the historical ones. There is enough missions to not have to replay the same ones everytime.
I like to keep my units in good shape as they survives through the campaigns.

I heard you invade Sweden in the alternative history. Why the frick would the Germans do that?

Well no way I'm going to get there because fall braun with zero prestige is probably going to spell the end of my campaign. Should have stuck with historic.

Yeah sometimes I absolutely HATE this game, but others I love it and can't stop thinking on what strategy I should follow and how to extend my supply lines. The more you play you'll feel the latter, but you won't stop hating its guts sometimes.

I'm about to start Blitzkrieg, according to the steam reviews it's much much better than Victory in the West.

I usually always prefer to play the Axis and after playing so many blitzkrieg campaigns, playing western allies in later war is refreshing for the genre.

After finishing Blitzkrieg and Barbarossa I think I'll go back and play Victory in the West to autistically get all the gold medals. I guess it will refreshing to not have to wrestle against scarcity.

Here's the problem with classic difficulty - it's pretty much RNG and you're screwed to complete all objectives on time unless everything is perfect with good rolls. 1st mission in Poland from Blitzkrieg scenario. It's impossible to take the southern objective turn 2 unless you perfectly prepare either a set piece attack or massive casualties. However there a chance which weather/rain can make the ground muddy making it impossible to get an infantry next to that hex on beginning of turn 2. That makes the scenario an instant restart. Then the second scenario where you have to take out Brest and another fortress, that shit is impossible to take on time and extremely difficult to even take on normal. Do you guys seriously just breeze through these objectives?

You're right in that it can take some save-scumming when you get particularly unlucky. It depends whether you prefer a style of just playing and letting the pieces fall where they may, or trying to find a path to 100% a scenario

        Anonymous

Well I do like how save-scumming isn't a thing in this game and you can restart as many times as you want and it only takes away from your overall score, which doesn't impact gameplay. The one turn off is that when you restart on normal it gives bonuses negating the point of trial and error.

I mean, you CAN save scum by flicking between saves

            Anonymous

What do you mean flicking between saves? The only thing I'm aware of is the undo button which is of course very limited in moves you can undo. Are you saying there is a way to save the game during scenario and reload it?

              Anonymous

Nevermind found it, wow there is actually an option to "save as" during campaign. I suppose it would be good to save stuff like campaign branch points or beginning of conferences if I would like to start over at the beginning of conference and experiment with different prestige allocation. But yeah, I guess if you used this feature between scenario turns it would be scummy.

                >it would be scummy.
I suppose, but sometimes some real bullshit happens in terms of weather or combat results and I would just end up redoing the entire scenario up to that point anyway

                Anonymous

Yeah I think you have to set reasonable rules for yourself, but I will say I have mixed feelings about the feature being in the game. Because on one hand they encourage you to live with your decisions, even if you don't make all objectives or bad rolls happen. That said, the difficulty of the game at classic and hard is that you require perfection and replaying takes a lot of time and can cause you to burn out. I think the most frustrating part is redoing deployment phase on big maps so I'm going to probably use the feature to help with that.

I was worried about that with Victory in the West (because cheevos & shiet) and it was exhausting.
But in blitzkrieg I just let the RNG take me places. After all war is like that, total rng chaos.
