Even worse if you're just exploring around and enter an area with monsters far stronger than what you were meeting before.
This one for me as well. It's impossible to recapture thr magic of the first time playing it and the friends I had made, without them the game is actually awful.

It's just sad addicts who can't let go despite modern maple being nothing like maplestory. Two completely different games not similar in any way, they even destroyed the original art style for some shit that looks like pixar made a chibi anime.
The same people who said old school maple was dogshit compared to nu-maple are the same people that thought classic wow and old school runescape were terrible compared to modern wow and runescape 3. Just no taste at all.
This shit fricking baffles me. I remember how devastatingly bad cubes made the game p2w, and now that they're making cubes obtainable with in-game currency rather than premium cash, every comment I see is "noooooo you can't take cubes out of the cash shop, this is a literal holocaust and you will kill the game!" And then they complain about reboot shutting down, which was specifically made for that very purpose of having a f2p experience and not have to buy cubes to play the game. How did they get stockholm syndrome'd this badly?
That's because the meso "cubes" are multiple times the price of cubes sold in heroic/reboot

I don't care if it's 9b mesos, cubes existing as a p2w mechanic has always been terrible. Which is another reason that people probably like pre-bb maple because cubes were added right around the same time as bb, which also rearranged the victoria island maps for no good reason.

3rd job was peak maple, 4th job era was garbage magestory but early big bang fixed a lot of the issues, namely removing no cooldown FMA and buffing adventurer classes. best possible version would be around red patch except no legends or resistance besides phantom and bam. fricking mercedes, cannon shooter and mechanic broke the fundamental platforming aspect of the game and demon slayer just brought back FMA but with free 100% stance.
i genuinely miss the very brief time when adventurers had good mobility but not hypermobility like what everyone has now. i liked that sweet spot even if it was stained by op newer classes. I liked when maple was about killing 2-6 mobs and needing classes to group/pin them instead of 30 at a time.
also a reason for why i have such a hateboner for post 4th job pre-bb maple is because of the shift towards flat braindead grind maps like jesters, mp3/ghost ship and gallos. a big part of maple for me was having sizeable maps you had to split up between party members to keep the spawn rate up. flat maps just made it where only 2 good mobbing classes were required and there was no room for anyone else except for rope leechers.
Do people really still play this shit? It was one of those games you had to experience when it was new, it's just a soulless cash grab now and has nothing going for it at all even compared to other soulless cash grabs. You might as well be playing a browser afk game its basically the same at this point.

Nu-maple barely resembles pre-bigbang. It's a complete shitshow.
It doesn't even resemble early big bang, and big bang wasn't even a bad patch. The worst aspects of maple were already set in stone before that with shit like miracle cubes and full map attack magestory. Instead of removing it they quadrupled down on RNG upgrade systems and gave everyone a way to clear an entire map in seconds.
A lot of the early adventurer changes to the game post-bb up to like the jump patch were kino incarnate and made old classes feel less shitty to play without making them over the top. Warriors getting a knockoff shitty flash jump and ground smash in 2nd job was huge and buccs were awesome until they replaced dragon strike with the cringe kamehameha laser.
There was a neat browser based fan/private server that came out that seemed to capture old ms really well. can't remember what it was called, but Nexon shut them down so fricking fast. Was a shame

frick, i played on the server. i was extremely paranoid for a year or 2 after that happened. shady frickers. i should have taken better precautions and done my research. got nostalgia baited in the end, but still immensely enjoyed what they created despite the scandal. i have rationalized it by thinking they had good intentions but had nefarious implementation with anti cheat
