the average player's attitude is the exact opposite of yours so you're already a cut above everyone else. 'i don't care how badly i play, you don't pay my sub' is the prevailing attitude you will find across the vast majority of the population. tank and healers in normal content are some of the worst at this
literally just go to any dungeon and tell the tank or healer how they're tanking or healing wrong and see how they reply

I don't mind playing a healer so long as I can do more things than just cast heal and upkeep the same few buffs, what all does Sage do here? Summoner is the certified glue eater job, it's incredibly simple....but you get Scholar(shield helaer) from leveling it or vice versa >Server

No one cares about you being a metaslave or tryhard outside of raiding really at all, even in raids people are pretty lax

that is literally how all the healers in this game play. they only have 1 main attacking spell that they will spam over and over hundreds of times per instance and 1 dot to upkeep. everything else is healing, defensive buffs and occasionally some offensive buffs, but because yoshida is so deathly afraid of 'stressing' the healers that normal difficulty content has barely any healing involved and you spend most of your time spamming the same boring attack
Sage is a shield healer with a slightly higher focus on doing damage than the other healers. Their main thing in the early game is keeping a loop where you apply a permabuff onto your tank that heals them so long as keep putting out consistent damage.
You won't get to play as them anytime soon though since they're locked behind Endwalker and require you to have a job at level 70 first before you can take the quest to unlock it.

More laidback. Only really a specific world, Balmung, is the designated ERP one but you're find people doing content on literally any server you choose.
Black Mage is fun but very hard because you have to work for your movement to dodge stuff. Sage has nothing in common with previous incarnations of Sages, it's a healer with Gundam laser things. Dragoon is fun and feels like an FF Dragoon. Archer is basic and it turns into Bard - you can't just be a forest ranger type of archer, you have to become a Bard to buff your allies with songs.

Keep an open mind - you may love or hate MMO gameplay. Try not to skip many cutscenes, gradual exposure to the worldbuilding makes it much more enjoyable later on. Be a little proactive and outgoing in your interactions with other players and you can start gathering friends which is vital if you want to enjoy this as an MMO instead of just playing the story like a JRPG then quitting.

I have some hopes for the caster since they've so far done the best job with giving that role diverse gameplay and flavour. I assume it's some nature themed green mage or OC-shaman kinda thing which is fine, I'd just look for an interesting weapon, hopefully not another staff.

don't start modding. it's not worth it. first its a shader, then its a hair style, then its just a cool outfit, next its a body mod to fix the pancake asses, then its a skimpier swimsuit, then maybe a tattoo, then a face mod, next thing you know...

Depends on how much you play but when I first started I was able to get through all of ARR MSQ in a little over a month. Unless you have a potato pc you can get some very basic reshade presets that'll improve the game's look with barely impacting performance.

Play the free trial as long as you can or can bear before you want other features, save some money because it's free all the way up to Stormblood

Maybe swap around jobs or whatever for fun because from what I've heard you get an excess of XP doing the story

Also take the other Anon's advice about Ninja, it really is one of the most fun jobs in the game

Healers are honestly braindead outside of raids
Summoner is the certified glue eater job, it's incredibly simple....but you get Scholar(shield helaer) from leveling it or vice versa

Primal is pretty much the same as Aether in my experience
Avoid the Dynamis datacenter because it's dead
That sucks in regards to healing and Summoners, but there are enough other neat sounding classes that I'm fine with that.
So Crystal has more of an E/RP culture and Aether/Primal have more of a meta focused culture? Or is Crystal just more laidback in general? I tend to not get super intense about games I play, so I might go with Crystal, even if I'm not interested in ERP (for now).

No one cares about you being a metaslave or tryhard outside of raiding really at all, even in raids people are pretty lax

that is literally how all the healers in this game play. they only have 1 main attacking spell that they will spam over and over hundreds of times per instance and 1 dot to upkeep. everything else is healing, defensive buffs and occasionally some offensive buffs, but because yoshida is so deathly afraid of 'stressing' the healers that normal difficulty content has barely any healing involved and you spend most of your time spamming the same boring attack
Sage is a shield healer with a slightly higher focus on doing damage than the other healers. Their main thing in the early game is keeping a loop where you apply a permabuff onto your tank that heals them so long as keep putting out consistent damage.
You won't get to play as them anytime soon though since they're locked behind Endwalker and require you to have a job at level 70 first before you can take the quest to unlock it.
More laidback. Only really a specific world, Balmung, is the designated ERP one but you're find people doing content on literally any server you choose.
Black Mage is fun but very hard because you have to work for your movement to dodge stuff. Sage has nothing in common with previous incarnations of Sages, it's a healer with Gundam laser things. Dragoon is fun and feels like an FF Dragoon. Archer is basic and it turns into Bard - you can't just be a forest ranger type of archer, you have to become a Bard to buff your allies with songs.

Keep an open mind - you may love or hate MMO gameplay. Try not to skip many cutscenes, gradual exposure to the worldbuilding makes it much more enjoyable later on. Be a little proactive and outgoing in your interactions with other players and you can start gathering friends which is vital if you want to enjoy this as an MMO instead of just playing the story like a JRPG then quitting.

I have some hopes for the caster since they've so far done the best job with giving that role diverse gameplay and flavour. I assume it's some nature themed green mage or OC-shaman kinda thing which is fine, I'd just look for an interesting weapon, hopefully not another staff.

yeah when i played i just turned on Vibrance i think it was called and played with that for a very long time. the game is criminally undercolored... seriously it's so much more beautiful like that. this screenshot https://i.imgur.com/dTnoG3i.jpg in particular had a few more options ticked on, but you get the gist. just a few clicks the entire experience is 5x more pretty. set it and forget it.

that is absolutely within your right, but i think nearly everyone would agree you're missing out if you play without a shader. what do people use now a days, reshade or something?
anyway when i played years ago it was gshade but some drama happened. even if you just enabled 1 option it isn't costly to your PC and makes the game MONUMENTALLY more colorful and vibrant.

Drama ended awhile ago, the schizo got sent to the shadow realm and the other devs just used the fix.
Depends on how much you play but when I first started I was able to get through all of ARR MSQ in a little over a month. Unless you have a potato pc you can get some very basic reshade presets that'll improve the game's look with barely impacting performance.
