I like the game and it feels like a good game, but it doesn't really feel like final fantasy to me anymore. Which I guess is simply an personal nitpick but it does make me feel kind of sad in a nostalgic sort of way. It just makes me kind of depressed that the only way I'll get more games like the FF games of my youth that I grew up loving is through a different IP or through remakes / remasters. And even the remakes are going the action route.
This is mostly an autistic ramble as I recognize it's hardly a critique of FF16 at all. It just kind of bums me out in a weird way. It's just further confirmation that this is full speed ahead as the direction for Final Fantasy going forward and I need to learn to live with it.
Never say never anon, anything can happen. Pray everyday that turn based will return to you and who knows it just might it's not like SE doesn't know people want the old school combat and narrative styles back. I just don't expect Amano era designs since yanno he's like 70 something.

I like the demo except for the performance.
That said, FF16 is an FF-themed game rather than an FF game. It's the MGS:R of FF games but with a flagship numbering. Not a complaint as I like it, but just how I see it.
It's too British. Feels like it's trying to be evocative of real world historical court drama and not as much like a fun, fantasy world. I like the game mechanics well enough, I just don't care about all these stupid British people.

FF12 felt pretty british but the fantasy world was still in the forefront.
With FF16 it feels a lot more grounded in the medieval fantasy setting without all the variety that comes from a purely fantasy world. I hope it's just what they've shown and the full game has a ton of variety but from what I've seen it's mostly pretty common or generic fantasy stuff instead of the more unique "final fantasy" style feel of their fantasy worlds.
There's still a lot of fantasy elements it's just rooted in serious medieval setting because game of thrones was hot when they decided to make it. And FFVII: Rebirth contrasts it by being bright

You're supposed to use the stagger windows well. The multiplier increases during the end of it, so that's when you want to generally spooge all over 'em.

The big enemies in the demo went down pretty quick so it gets worse later on, they fixed it for the demo, or the promotional gameplay footage was intentionally bloated to show off the combat.
