XIV isn't actually linked to other FF games. It's all homages/fan service to older FF stuff as part of the "theme park MMO" model.
Even the Ivalice parts are not the same Ivalice as FF Tactics and FF12, it's just an incredibly similar direct insertion with differences from the main games (how Delita/other characters plays out, the different moogles, what characters did what, etc).

According to Matsuno, the plan was to skip the whole "liberating Dalmasca" arc after Bozja because it'd just be another rehash of Stormblood, and instead come back after some time to focus on the post-war rebuilding. So if they're just waiting for the right amount of timeskip in the main plot, it's possible we could still get the rest of Gabranth and Lyon's story.

ShB is the best expac because that's when SE started taking the game seriously and giving the game the budget required to actually deliver on story. HW was "good" but you could still see the very obvious holes and limitations. The worst part of Gaius for me is that ARR there's no context and the garleans & garlemald are done dirty, even in the expansion when we finally visit it.

He has a solid character and they've built it up but in ARR you reach him and you get his big speech in prae and you sympathise with him. Then nothing's done with it, 'cause we're now building up the ancients plotline and thordan's HW story (LOL).
So when Zenos makes an appearance, it feels off, 'cause we don't have the context of 1.0 and he swiftly departs at the end of 4.0. It doesn't feel like the big battle we were promised and the emperor. well, you'll have to play along with the post game and ShB.

If you consider it with 1.0 context, it works. If you look at it on ARR terms, it really makes little sense, they're an empire trying to occupy the nation by force because they hate primals and that's it.
Then it goes into the ascian and ascian subplot. Lahabread has no reason to reveal his plans to Gaius even with the heart of sabik, it isn't a big gotcha, it isn't the star's turning point. He just says it because plot go forward with no context.

What's more, the first three expacs are free now so give it a try.
It is pretty single player most of the time, but the combat is worse. Try out the demo, it lasts forever as long as you don't upgrade it to a paid account.
Going through the MSQ is basically a single player game but with a player populated world instead of just NPCs. It's a massive slog in places but can be comfy with the right mindset, and there's kino moments interspersed.

XIV isn't actually linked to other FF games. It's all homages/fan service to older FF stuff as part of the "theme park MMO" model.

According to Matsuno, the plan was to skip the whole "liberating Dalmasca" arc after Bozja because it'd just be another rehash of Stormblood, and instead come back after some time to focus on the post-war rebuilding. So if they're just waiting for the right amount of timeskip in the main plot, it's possible we could still get the rest of Gabranth and Lyon's story.

Even his overarching narrative was butchered by the budget. The whole hostage situation shit makes no fricking sense because every "cutscene" in XIV must be a bunch of stock emotes and not an actual cutscene.
Any and all complexity his narratives typically have was inevitably tanked by the restrictions of the MMO narrative box.

ShB is the best expac because that's when SE started taking the game seriously and giving the game the budget required to actually deliver on story. HW was "good" but you could still see the very obvious holes and limitations. So when Zenos makes an appearance, it feels off, 'cause we don't have the context of 1.0 and he swiftly departs at the end of 4.0. It doesn't feel like the big battle we were promised and the emperor. well, you'll have to play along with the post game and ShB.
