These patches made me painfully aware of just how many important npcs there are in the game that you can never visit between patches.

It is, mostly since they have to survive one enemy turn unless you cheat that exact card out with something like the Oracle of Light. The TCG is actually really, really good, lots of ways to build FF themed decks and very affordable even when buying singles. SE is just so fricking bad at advertising for it.
Also puts best girl on the Dissidia TCG box. I swear the director of the TCG really likes Y'shtola, she was a lot of card variants... not as much as Cloud but she is up there.

Only card game I play is Legends of Runeterra and the one it reminds me of is Ryze's gameplan, that one isn't too hard to achieve and the only difference seems to be that this one takes more cards but in return they're impossible to stop.

This is all true, but I feel like they are just done with the Twelve-worshipping cultures of Eorzea, and are planning to spend the next 10 years somewhere completely different where the Twelve aren't worshipped as gods. Why was the first cutscene of the 6.5 MSQ not voiced and why did it feel that the animation was WAY better than the other ones? That and the time when Ryne mused over plants stood out as if it was made by a different animation team. Lips being way more pronounced and eye movement was more natural.

I would not see much more into this act if it wasn't so incredibly consistent in this game to write female characters out of the story as frequently and with as much finality as possible.

No one is reborn exactly the same way. Once someone returns to the aetherial sea, their aether slowly disperses over time and eventually coalesces into new forms for new living beings. So no, Venat is never coming back, but neither is anyone who dies (unless they are able to be pulled from the sea within a relatively short time after their death, e.g. Hythlodaeus and Emet-Selch).

it sets both the First and the 13th up to be massively different when we revisit them, now that there are powerful players moving to fix both. All of 6.x has been a huge attempt to blank slate the game, so writers are unbound by any former baggage.
Right back in 6.1 there was an interview where Yoshi outright said that Voidshit woupd be resolved by 7.0. Patch cycle MSQ is now inconsequential filler, please look forward to it.

Corsair has only ever been in one other FF game and even then it likely won't share anything except aesthetics.
Corsair in FFXI was basically gambler - it had gambling mechanics for its buffs that just wouldn't work in FFXIV.
There's a chance it won't even be called Corsair, but something else like 'Explorer' or 'Buccaneer"

Back in the day, MMOs were pretty much exclusively numbers based - all that mattered was the amount of damage the enemy was able to dish out, and the skills of the classes. There weren't really any 'mechanics'.
Once WoW released and slowly but surely moved the MMO genre into a more semi-action/movement based combat system, everythinig changed.

WHen you make Jobs too different, imbalances incur - gimmicks make it so either certain Jobs become mandatory, or they're so shit that they get blacklisted.
This happened in FFXIV itself in this expansion - it's so fricking difficult winning a PvP CC match if you don't have a WAR/WHM/DRG/NIN combo if your opponent does, because they are just the best classes from a fundamental standpoint..

That isn't true, I'm not saying that you are strictly wrong but the problem with the game is that everything is designed to be as streamlined and efficient as possible. Vanilla WoW is one of the few MMOs that got close to solving the problem by making each encounter easy enough to allow good players/classes to carry bad players/classes, the more the devs pushed the difficulty and speedclear mindset the more they needed to streamline the game to make sure that people still played with each other.
As a reminder, 90% of the MMO playerbase didn't give a flying FRICK about what was most efficient or easiest way to do things until developers pushed that onto them, the more the devs tried to make players consider the above the less players wanted to play/interact with content and others that didn't have that in mind.
Ask yourself this, do you seriously think that most people who played Elden Ring, Final Fantasy 16 or even Baldurs Gate 3 gives a flying frick about how efficient each setup/build/class/job is? I'd argue that the people who care are usually in the minority but are so unbelievably loud that they sound like they represent the entire playerbase for their respective game even when the game itself isn't designed around the idea that players needs to play it as efficiently as possible

Here is the fundamental difference:
In an MMO, you need other players. If you are not efficient and cannot bring anything to the table in a really mechanically intensive and DPS-checking fight, then you are just being a burden that can easily be replaced by someone who is a better player, has a better job, has better gear, etc.
It is simply the fundamental nature of MMOs, and it has gotten worse the more it started to stray from just having raw numbers being the most important thing.

It isn't just that. MMOs are designed backwards which means that the reward that you get from playing content is more important from a design standpoint than the content itself. It's why even other multiplayer based RPGs don't force the efficiency mindset on their players quite like MMOs does. You can play through the entirety of BG3 with a stranger and unless that stranger (or you) is an autistic butthole none of you would give a shit about what the other player is playing as long as it doesn't go completely against the spirit of the game (helping each other reach the end of the story).
If MMOs stopped relying so heavily on rewards driving gameplay instead of content itself driving gameplay then they would fix this problem, but the MMO paradox is that you need to keep people playing for as long as possible and the easiest way to achive that is by giving players incentives that then leads into incentives that then repeat on an endless loop

That is because Pandoras box has already been opened, people complained because they could be doing other content that would give them rewards instead of playing content that wouldn't.
There is a balance to this however as shown with IS, unless the rewards are godly then that means that players will never engage with shit content. However, the same can not be said for good content with no rewards and that is simply because the players have been trained by said rewards to make any engagement with the game that doesn't end up with a reward feel like a waste of time no matter the context

The issue is that FFXIV just isn't complex enough in its systems, which means enemies can't be complicated either, which means player jobs can't be complicated either.
When they start actually adding some systems like elemental affinities and physical weaknesses(like they used to have) things will change again. Maybe add some gear that actually does things to your character beyond ilvl.

that’s just a knock on effect of the internet and information availability being much more prevalent nowadays than back then

The man is DEAD. Unless Zero and Durante are breaking out the pokeballs in Dawntrail, he's fricking DEAD. I think they just couldn't/didn't want to commit to making a second Ardbert and didn't have the technology/stones to make an NPC that's the player's WoL as a certain race/gender. Like how we haven't seen Azem proper, Lalafell players would not be happy with their full DBZ fusion selves not being a 3 foot tall midget.
I don't like the gear that much either but the aesthetics were top tier. I love Castlevania. I can't think of any raid story that was significantly better, they all really only get interesting toward the end. Way way better than Omega's World Tournament nostalgiahomosexualry.

FFXIV has always had subtractive writing. Every conflict, every lore aspect is "solved" and so any new lore that is introduced exists only for as long as the narrative wills it (usually within the same expansion). The Dragonsong War, everything about Garlemald, Omega, Hydaelyn and Zodiark, nothing has staying power in FFXIV. Characters stick around, but generally anything setting-related that's established is "resolved." It makes the world really uninteresting and flat.
The 8-year resolution didn't feel like closure to 8 years of storytelling at all because a lot of what they resolved was introduced in Shadowbringers or even Endwalker, like Venat, Zodiark's purpose, Meteion, etc. They had so little unresolved shit to pull from that the best they could was make NPCs from 8 years show up so you could clap and say you remembered them from Heavensward.

Well it would be more varied if you were incentivized to use a variety of different abilities depending on the zone. In Bozja, the gameplay is basically the same whether you're in BSF or Zadnor, but with different lost actions maybe you'd try out more stuff instead of sticking with one thing forever. It'd also incentivize players to participate in both zones, if progress in one aided in the other

These patches made me painfully aware of just how many important npcs there are in the game that you can never visit between patches.
You could visit Y'shtola the entirety of 5.x and huge parts of 4.x. They only recently started that with the last patch.

It is, mostly since they have to survive one enemy turn unless you cheat that exact card out with something like the Oracle of Light. The TCG is actually really, really good, lots of ways to build FF themed decks and very affordable even when buying singles. SE is just so fricking bad at advertising for it.

it sets both the First and the 13th up to be massively different when we revisit them, now that there are powerful players moving to fix both. All of 6.x has been a huge attempt to blank slate the game, so writers are unbound by any former baggage.
Right back in 6.1 there was an interview where Yoshi outright said that Voidshit woupd be resolved by 7.0. Patch cycle MSQ is now inconsequential filler, please look forward to it.

Back in the day, MMOs were pretty much exclusively numbers based - all that mattered was the amount of damage the enemy was able to dish out, and the skills of the classes. There weren't really any 'mechanics'.
Once WoW released and slowly but surely moved the MMO genre into a more semi-action/movement based combat system, everythinig changed.
But you can have depth in the more movement based combat. Shit you could port the COR rolls from XI to XIV easily, mechanically nothing would bar you from doing so I feel.
WHen you make Jobs too different, imbalances incur - gimmicks make it so either certain Jobs become mandatory, or they're so shit that they get blacklisted.
This happened in FFXIV itself in this expansion - it's so fricking difficult winning a PvP CC match if you don't have a WAR/WHM/DRG/NIN combo if your opponent does, because they are just the best classes from a fundamental standpoint..

That isn't true, I'm not saying that you are strictly wrong but the problem with the game is that everything is designed to be as streamlined and efficient as possible. Vanilla WoW is one of the few MMOs that got close to solving the problem by making each encounter easy enough to allow good players/classes to carry bad players/classes, the more the devs pushed the difficulty and speedclear mindset the more they needed to streamline the game to make sure that people still played with each other.
As a reminder, 90% of the MMO playerbase didn't give a flying FRICK about what was most efficient or easiest way to do things until developers pushed that onto them, the more the devs tried to make players consider the above the less players wanted to play/interact with content and others that didn't have that in mind.
Ask yourself this, do you seriously think that most people who played Elden Ring, Final Fantasy 16 or even Baldurs Gate 3 gives a flying frick about how efficient each setup/build/class/job is? I'd argue that the people who care are usually in the minority but are so unbelievably loud that they sound like they represent the entire playerbase for their respective game even when the game itself isn't designed around the idea that players needs to play it as efficiently as possible
Here is the fundamental difference:
In an MMO, you need other players. If you are not efficient and cannot bring anything to the table in a really mechanically intensive and DPS-checking fight, then you are just being a burden that can easily be replaced by someone who is a better player, has a better job, has better gear, etc.
It is simply the fundamental nature of MMOs, and it has gotten worse the more it started to stray from just having raw numbers being the most important thing.

It isn't just that. MMOs are designed backwards which means that the reward that you get from playing content is more important from a design standpoint than the content itself. It's why even other multiplayer based RPGs don't force the efficiency mindset on their players quite like MMOs does. You can play through the entirety of BG3 with a stranger and unless that stranger (or you) is an autistic butthole none of you would give a shit about what the other player is playing as long as it doesn't go completely against the spirit of the game (helping each other reach the end of the story).
If MMOs stopped relying so heavily on rewards driving gameplay instead of content itself driving gameplay then they would fix this problem, but the MMO paradox is that you need to keep people playing for as long as possible and the easiest way to achive that is by giving players incentives that then leads into incentives that then repeat on an endless loop
Look at what happened when they didn't put enough rewards in criterion, pretty fun 4 man content. People were b***hing for eternity.
That is because Pandoras box has already been opened, people complained because they could be doing other content that would give them rewards instead of playing content that wouldn't.
There is a balance to this however as shown with IS, unless the rewards are godly then that means that players will never engage with shit content. However, the same can not be said for good content with no rewards and that is simply because the players have been trained by said rewards to make any engagement with the game that doesn't end up with a reward feel like a waste of time no matter the context

The issue is that FFXIV just isn't complex enough in its systems, which means enemies can't be complicated either, which means player jobs can't be complicated either.
When they start actually adding some systems like elemental affinities and physical weaknesses(like they used to have) things will change again. Maybe add some gear that actually does things to your character beyond ilvl.

FFXIV has always had subtractive writing. Every conflict, every lore aspect is "solved" and so any new lore that is introduced exists only for as long as the narrative wills it (usually within the same expansion). The Dragonsong War, everything about Garlemald, Omega, Hydaelyn and Zodiark, nothing has staying power in FFXIV. Characters stick around, but generally anything setting-related that's established is "resolved." It makes the world really uninteresting and flat.
The 8-year resolution didn't feel like closure to 8 years of storytelling at all because a lot of what they resolved was introduced in Shadowbringers or even Endwalker, like Venat, Zodiark's purpose, Meteion, etc. They had so little unresolved shit to pull from that the best they could was make NPCs from 8 years show up so you could clap and say you remembered them from Heavensward.

Well it would be more varied if you were incentivized to use a variety of different abilities depending on the zone. In Bozja, the gameplay is basically the same whether you're in BSF or Zadnor, but with different lost actions maybe you'd try out more stuff instead of sticking with one thing forever. It'd also incentivize players to participate in both zones, if progress in one aided in the other

The music is so bittersweet because I have such fond memories of the game from 2.X and 3.X
Remember how Cloud of Darkness had teamwork where players had to stand in the clouds to slow them? Or how Diabolos Hollow just went apeshit and killed himself and most of the party? Or how Scathach had the hands that you needed other members to kill while you looked away? Or any of the crystal tower series (before ilvl steamroll) involving people doing anything more than "don't stand in the bad color"?

Id' imagine the demand of knowing every single mechanic of every duty is a an unrealistic burden that can't be fulfilled.
But that makes mentors even more moronic for wearing the damn crown in the first place.
I could literally sleepwalk through every single dungeon and normal raid content in the game, if a mentor can't figure out not how to stand near the tank in normal Ramuh they shouldn't be a mentor, ever.
Real reason: Good players don't have the 1500 dungeon runs or whatever is required to become a mentor. Because good players (smart people) don't waste their life doing brainless garbage over and over.
I've played since ARR and cleared everything when it was new, and I still don't have enough duty clears to be a mentor. Because 90% of my playtime is spent progressing Savage/Ultimate, and then only actually clearing them 8 times/1 time respectively.
Just don't give a shit bros, it's the only way to stay sane after 2k roulettes with all the moronic sprouts and french who queue for extremes without doing any kind of prep and expecting mentors to type out fully written guides the second you queue into a duty instead of just you know fricking reading them yourselves before queueing or just being fricking french on Light instead staying on Chaos like the shitheads are supposed to
