When Deus Ex Human Revolution had its gameplay shown off and trailers done it looked abysmal. The person played it like a FPS, everything was highlighted in yellow, it looked like it lost any nuance the original had, it looked nothing like the original in terms of anything, and it gave everyone a bad impression.
Like a month prior to release a dev build randomly leaked. It was the entire first portion of the game, I can't remember if it was right before you went to Hong Kong or right before you dealt with the police station but it wasn't indefinite. That single leak changed people from thinking it was going to be an Invisible War trainwreck to a must buy. It showed that the people in the gameplay showcases had no idea how to play, you could turn off a lot of stuff including the outlines, it encouraged stealth heavily, you could do stuff like put in codes from the original or take alternate routes into basically everything, it had the RE4 inventory sorting, etc.
You could also very easily find this build basically anywhere without trying and here you had people spamming links to it for like a month.
I knew I'll probably get it but I didn't really watch anything related to it and went into the demo completely blind

I was actually surprised by how sincere the events of the demo played out. I expected a Red Wedding twist betrayal, but all of your bros were loyal to the end.
I was surprised by how the game didn't seem to revel in its violence, while still having a lot of it. Yeah there's a kind of brutality to everything but the game so far is using the really violent stuff to great effect. If every fight ended with Clive dismembering guards, his dad just getting cut down or the final Ifrit/Phoenix scene wouldn't have nearly as much impact as they did.

What I was saying was that the game is spacing out the really violent moments, and that makes them stand out much more in the story. It isn't trying to be Madworld or Ninja Gaiden where you rip people in half every 30 seconds. It's not portraying ultraviolence as something cool, and it saves the more gruesome stuff to make scenes more memorable. If Clive was just cutting people in half like Ryu in the gameplay, then the times that the story gets really violent wouldn't stand out as fricked up/overly brutal. If every Eikon fight ends with a minute long cutscene of Ifrit ripping the throat out of the enemy, then the scene where it just mutilates Phoenix wouldn't stand out as something that's meant to be traumatic for Clive or by extension the player. It would just be another Eikon fight, same with how Clive's dad's death would just be another casualty of battle if normal combat ended with heads all over the floor.

Something that really hit for me is how the dominants aren't really summoners, they're more like walking nuclear bombs. I think the opening establishes it really well, making Clive feel so small in the midst of Shiva and Titan destroying whole armies and the entire landscape, and then there's all the collateral damage at Phoenix Gate. They needed the realistic framing to establish the eikons' scale.

Played through the Eikonic Challenge once so far. It's pretty tough to get a good rhythm going for the attacks. I don't want to just spam my CDs, but my fingers keep forgetting which buttons do which. I also can't seem to fire magic in between every sword attack (more like every second). Not even mentioning Torgal use.
It feels like the game should be played at a slower cadence. It's not a hack'n'slash or beatemup like DD or Yakuza, even if you could just spam everything.
So far I have high hopes. If they have solid encounter variety and enemy ability variety, this could be some kino shit.
The question is, will this game be able break the JRPG glass ceiling of 90 on metacritic?

I can believe Garuda before Shiva, the demo made it seem like Clive had never absorbed another Eikon's essence. We also don't really know when Clive gets a handle on Phoenix, but it's clear he doesn't have Ifrit until he revisits Rosaria ruins. Titan is also hard to place by footage alone, he seems to first encounter Hugo in Rosario throne in his 30s or towards the end of his 20s.

Not played the demo, but I'm already seeing a problem with these QTE's. One they seem to be constantly popping up which feels like it will get annoying and constantly breaking the flow of the fight. Two, they seem brain dead easy. The timer should be 0.5-1 second long, not 4 seconds.
They're really not as intrusive as it seems but yeah, not the best use of QTEs I've seen.
At least there's only 1 of 2 buttons you have to press whenever they pop.

Joshua lives. Mystery homie is a manifestation of Clive's guilt for killing Joshua and Joshua himself depending on the situation. Benedikta dies after her bossfight. Yeah, this is literally their only interaction in the entire game. In a later scene, she's banging Barnachad. It surprised me too how quickly she got bodied.

The vengeance quest is not pointless. Clive grows as a person by getting over the fact that he killed Joshua. It's an integral part of his character and there's a major arc devoted to this where he masters being Ifrit.

It's a spoiler in the sense that the game plays up the first 20 hours as the dominant of fire being some kind of mystery entity that controlled Clive or some shit instead of Clive losing controle. There's basically two mystery homie's. The one Benedikta kidnapped (which is Joshua) and the one that appears every so often to guide Clive to places where he gets stronger (which is Clive's guilt manifested). If the mystery homie speaks in weirdass language, it's Ifrit/Clive's guilt.

Because it's also Ifrit. Ifrit takes the form of Clive when he's a mystery homie. He's pulling double duty. The first time you see him, it's Ifrit in the form of Clive under the cape. Later, it's a "Dark Clive" symbolising his guilt.

The first time Find The Flame plays is during the Ifrit/Clive's Guilt boss fight which happens when Clive accepts his guilt, obtains his limit break and gains control over Ifrit.

The Meaning of Life. Clive and Jill explored some ruins where they found the mural of the strange god. While looking at it, Ifrit/Clive's Guilt appeared before them which led to Clive going schizo. This leads to a massive fight in Clive's head where he reconciles with his guilt and faces Ifrit 1v1. During the fight, he unlocks his limit break, Find the Flame plays for the first time and he turns into Ifrit for Ifrit vs Ifrit.
Afterwards they leave to return to Murdoch's wife to see if they can help her manage Duke Elwin's old Bearers. Meanwhile, Hugo receives a box containing Benedikta's head sent to him supposedly Cid. Hugo gets angry, nearly weeps and vows to murder Cid and everyone at the Hideout.

Jill wakes up after Benedikta dies. Following that, there's a lot of romantic undertones. Jill and Clive are inseperable. Especially since while they travel, Clive larps as Jill's bearer.

Clive attunes to Garuda, which causes Benedikta to completely lose her powers. She goes schizo and demands Garuda back. Gerulf, her second in command, saves her when she panics. Clive is fricked due to the attunement and Cid is still injured so they can't stop Benedikta from escaping. At the same time, Joshua breaks out of his cell with his powers and sets the Bearers free. He blows up a big part of the Caer.
Later as Benedikta and co are escaping, they get ambushed by highway men who murder everyone except her. Benedikta is still schizo-ing about how she is now useless to Barnabas and he's kick her out. The highwaymen decide to rape Benedikta. This triggers her old trauma of being raped (something Cid saved her from) and she fully primes and turns into Garuda. Clive and Cid see the giant tornado forming. Clive also sees the hooded figure (Ifrit, not Joshua) go towards the tornado. He follows which leads to the fight with Garuda, Ifrit/Clive killing Garuda, Cid/Ramuh intervening and of course, the reveal of Benedikta's mangled corpse.

A priest is taking care of petrifying bearers there for Martha. The petrification thing is revealed there and it's a pretty emotional scene where the priest cries and a bearer dies. He's doing other mystery shit. You meet him in passing at Martha's Rest with Goetz where you see his arm is petrified. The game kinda implies this search for answers is a personal quest for Clive and Jill so it would be weird for Cid to come. It might also have something to do with the head in a box Hugo receives. The courier specifically said Cid sent it, but that seems very out of character so I believe he's being framed. That said, since we don't see what Cid is up to right now there's still the possibility of doubt. I haven't had time to play further.

The game's story structure is very reminiscent of FF14's structure. Heavy climax moments mixed with several chapters of world and character-building. But when the climax gets going, it gets going hard as shit.
Overal the game is pretty easy difficulty wise. The enemies die very fast once you get multiple eikons, good gear and get good and juggling your actions and Torgals. Mid-bosses are jokes but climax bosses are pretty hefty. There's one sequence where
Gav is cornered by Imperial knights and Clive and Cid team up to fight a Dragoon and his dragon which was pretty wild. At the end his starts challenging his inner Estinien and just keeps spamming high speed jumps until Cid has enough his shit and thunderblasts him out of the sky.

I'm currently working on air combos by combining Torgal's launcher with Phoenix Shift and then constantly pulling enemies up again with Deadly Embrace.

There's an interview where Soken said they wanted him to keep it mostly classical but he was allowed to step outside that for one boss fight (because he made the music for it and implemented it before they tested it) and the team liked it so it stayed.

Bearer got ambushed while collecting soil. Save her.
Find wood and deliver.
Fishmonger dropped crystal and monster ate it. Kill monster and retrieve.
Bearer without tattoo got outed. Find him and hide him before villagers lynch him.
The entire racism/discrimination thing against Bearers is very overt btw. One guy's friend gets outed as Bearer with no tattoo and the friend wants to violently lynch him so no one calls him a "Bearer Lover". This is not even subtle.

Most accesories I've gotten are ones that increase the damage from Eikon abillities by X%. You can also see those in the demo though.
I haven't gotten anything more interesting than those. The weapon variety is cool though. You get to forge a lot of cool swords and after every boss, you got a purple drop that turns into a cool weapon.
Gil is basically pointless btw. You always forge gear and usually will have enough materials to get the best things for your level forged. It's a fallback for low skill players to get consumables for now. I assume later the shops will sell more interesting shit.

When Deus Ex Human Revolution had its gameplay shown off and trailers done it looked abysmal. The person played it like a FPS, everything was highlighted in yellow, it looked like it lost any nuance the original had, it looked nothing like the original in terms of anything, and it gave everyone a bad impression.
Like a month prior to release a dev build randomly leaked. It was the entire first portion of the game, I can't remember if it was right before you went to Hong Kong or right before you dealt with the police station but it wasn't indefinite. That single leak changed people from thinking it was going to be an Invisible War trainwreck to a must buy. It showed that the people in the gameplay showcases had no idea how to play, you could turn off a lot of stuff including the outlines, it encouraged stealth heavily, you could do stuff like put in codes from the original or take alternate routes into basically everything, it had the RE4 inventory sorting, etc.
You could also very easily find this build basically anywhere without trying and here you had people spamming links to it for like a month.

I was actually surprised by how sincere the events of the demo played out. I expected a Red Wedding twist betrayal, but all of your bros were loyal to the end.
I was surprised by how the game didn't seem to revel in its violence, while still having a lot of it. Yeah there's a kind of brutality to everything but the game so far is using the really violent stuff to great effect. If every fight ended with Clive dismembering guards, his dad just getting cut down or the final Ifrit/Phoenix scene wouldn't have nearly as much impact as they did.

What I was saying was that the game is spacing out the really violent moments, and that makes them stand out much more in the story. It isn't trying to be Madworld or Ninja Gaiden where you rip people in half every 30 seconds. It's not portraying ultraviolence as something cool, and it saves the more gruesome stuff to make scenes more memorable. If Clive was just cutting people in half like Ryu in the gameplay, then the times that the story gets really violent wouldn't stand out as fricked up/overly brutal. If every Eikon fight ends with a minute long cutscene of Ifrit ripping the throat out of the enemy, then the scene where it just mutilates Phoenix wouldn't stand out as something that's meant to be traumatic for Clive or by extension the player. It would just be another Eikon fight, same with how Clive's dad's death would just be another casualty of battle if normal combat ended with heads all over the floor.
That Ifrit scene is curious because it got a friend who pretty much plays all these games to say he was uncomfortably affected by watching.

I think the opening establishes it really well, making Clive feel so small in the midst of Shiva and Titan destroying whole armies and the entire landscape, and then there's all the collateral damage at Phoenix Gate. They needed the realistic framing to establish the eikons' scale.

I don't want to just spam my CDs, but my fingers keep forgetting which buttons do which. I also can't seem to fire magic in between every sword attack (more like every second). Not even mentioning Torgal use.
It feels like the game should be played at a slower cadence. It's not a hack'n'slash or beatemup like DD or Yakuza, even if you could just spam everything.

I can believe Garuda before Shiva, the demo made it seem like Clive had never absorbed another Eikon's essence. We also don't really know when Clive gets a handle on Phoenix, but it's clear he doesn't have Ifrit until he revisits Rosaria ruins. Titan is also hard to place by footage alone, he seems to first encounter Hugo in Rosario throne in his 30s or towards the end of his 20s.

Not played the demo, but I'm already seeing a problem with these QTE's. One they seem to be constantly popping up which feels like it will get annoying and constantly breaking the flow of the fight. Two, they seem brain dead easy. The timer should be 0.5-1 second long, not 4 seconds.
They're really not as intrusive as it seems but yeah, not the best use of QTEs I've seen.

The vengeance quest is not pointless. Clive grows as a person by getting over the fact that he killed Joshua. It's an integral part of his character and there's a major arc devoted to this where he masters being Ifrit.

It's a spoiler in the sense that the game plays up the first 20 hours as the dominant of fire being some kind of mystery entity that controlled Clive or some shit instead of Clive losing controle. There's basically two mystery homie's. The one Benedikta kidnapped (which is Joshua) and the one that appears every so often to guide Clive to places where he gets stronger (which is Clive's guilt manifested). If the mystery homie speaks in weirdass language, it's Ifrit/Clive's guilt.
His reason for his quest changes after that gets resolved and mellows out.
What you saw was Cid stopping Clive from going apeshit after she was dead. The following scene shows her mangled corpse. Also someone sends her head to Hugo while saying Cid did it. This prompts the conflict between Cid/Clive and Hugo.

Because it's also Ifrit. Ifrit takes the form of Clive when he's a mystery homie. He's pulling double duty. The first time you see him, it's Ifrit in the form of Clive under the cape. Later, it's a "Dark Clive" symbolising his guilt.
Bearers and Dominants slowly turn to stone the more they use their magical powers. There's a small arc surrounding it where Clive and Jill find this out. We later see that Cid's left arm is mostly petrified. Not sure if this detail about Cid has been revealed yet. There's been so much revealed in interviews and trailers.
The first time Find The Flame plays is during the Ifrit/Clive's Guilt boss fight which happens when Clive accepts his guilt, obtains his limit break and gains control over Ifrit.

It's a slow build-up. You have to understand both of them have spent the last 13 years as murder machines for war and they're traumatized. It's clear that there is something there, but they're both dealing with shit. Jill keeps pushing though and Clive appears to want to accept but is still too weighed down by his guilt where I'm at now.

Chapter X: Heacanon
The Meaning of Life. Clive and Jill explored some ruins where they found the mural of the strange god. While looking at it, Ifrit/Clive's Guilt appeared before them which led to Clive going schizo. This leads to a massive fight in Clive's head where he reconciles with his guilt and faces Ifrit 1v1. During the fight, he unlocks his limit break, Find the Flame plays for the first time and he turns into Ifrit for Ifrit vs Ifrit.
Afterwards they leave to return to Murdoch's wife to see if they can help her manage Duke Elwin's old Bearers. Meanwhile, Hugo receives a box containing Benedikta's head sent to him supposedly Cid. Hugo gets angry, nearly weeps and vows to murder Cid and everyone at the Hideout.
Clive at this point is not involved in the war at all. Destroying the crystals or fighting any major faction has not come up yet. He's still seeking answers about the Phoenix Gate incident.

Jill is in a coma during most of this time. The first thing you after the prologue is beat Jill up. Finding out Jill is the Shiva dominant is what causes Clive to rebel and leads to meeting Cid. Jill wakes up after Benedikta dies. Following that, there's a lot of romantic undertones. Jill and Clive are inseperable. Especially since while they travel, Clive larps as Jill's bearer.

Clive attunes to Garuda, which causes Benedikta to completely lose her powers. She goes schizo and demands Garuda back. Gerulf, her second in command, saves her when she panics. Clive is fricked due to the attunement and Cid is still injured so they can't stop Benedikta from escaping. At the same time, Joshua breaks out of his cell with his powers and sets the Bearers free. He blows up a big part of the Caer.
Later as Benedikta and co are escaping, they get ambushed by highway men who murder everyone except her. Benedikta is still schizo-ing about how she is now useless to Barnabas and he's kick her out. The highwaymen decide to rape Benedikta. This triggers her old trauma of being raped (something Cid saved her from) and she fully primes and turns into Garuda. Clive and Cid see the giant tornado forming. Clive also sees the hooded figure (Ifrit, not Joshua) go towards the tornado. He follows which leads to the fight with Garuda, Ifrit/Clive killing Garuda, Cid/Ramuh intervening and of course, the reveal of Benedikta's mangled corpse.

Bridge is broken. You find the carpenter to fix it. While you wait, Martha, a friend of Cid, sends you to a church to see a "dark side of the world". A priest is taking care of petrifying bearers there for Martha. The petrification thing is revealed there and it's a pretty emotional scene where the priest cries and a bearer dies. Bridge gets fixed later and off you go.

He's doing other mystery shit. You meet him in passing at Martha's Rest with Goetz where you see his arm is petrified. The game kinda implies this search for answers is a personal quest for Clive and Jill so it would be weird for Cid to come. It might also have something to do with the head in a box Hugo receives. The courier specifically said Cid sent it, but that seems very out of character so I believe he's being framed. That said, since we don't see what Cid is up to right now there's still the possibility of doubt. I haven't had time to play further.

Nah, that's the scene where they first speak post-coma. There's a later scene where they sleep together in a barn in a haystack and talk about their past trauma's. Jill attempts to make a move on Clive, even leaning in for a kiss. But Clive is still too stuck in his own issues to reprocate.

The game's story structure is very reminiscent of FF14's structure. Heavy climax moments mixed with several chapters of world and character-building. But when the climax gets going, it gets going hard as shit.
Overal the game is pretty easy difficulty wise. The enemies die very fast once you get multiple eikons, good gear and get good and juggling your actions and Torgals. Mid-bosses are jokes but climax bosses are pretty hefty. There's one sequence where
Gav is cornered by Imperial knights and Clive and Cid team up to fight a Dragoon and his dragon which was pretty wild. At the end his starts challenging his inner Estinien and just keeps spamming high speed jumps until Cid has enough his shit and thunderblasts him out of the sky.

There's an interview where Soken said they wanted him to keep it mostly classical but he was allowed to step outside that for one boss fight (because he made the music for it and implemented it before they tested it) and the team liked it so it stayed.

Deliver food to other people.
Bearer got ambushed while collecting soil. Save her.
Find wood and deliver.
Fishmonger dropped crystal and monster ate it. Kill monster and retrieve.
Bearer without tattoo got outed. Find him and hide him before villagers lynch him.
The entire racism/discrimination thing against Bearers is very overt btw. One guy's friend gets outed as Bearer with no tattoo and the friend wants to violently lynch him so no one calls him a "Bearer Lover". This is not even subtle.

can you talk about the accesory variety? we have only seen a few that increase ability damage and provide some cooldown reduction.
We have also seen all the timely accessories, and the badge of mettle and might.
Most accesories I've gotten are ones that increase the damage from Eikon abillities by X%. You can also see those in the demo though.
I haven't gotten anything more interesting than those. The weapon variety is cool though. You get to forge a lot of cool swords and after every boss, you got a purple drop that turns into a cool weapon.
Gil is basically pointless btw. You always forge gear and usually will have enough materials to get the best things for your level forged. It's a fallback for low skill players to get consumables for now. I assume later the shops will sell more interesting shit.

bosses are sponges, but they give you free stagger windows via QTEs as well as free damage. You cannot skip or turn-off the QTEs, they simply arrive. 5 seconds to respond to each one.
