Japan Studio was bad at making games. It routinely screwed up basic ass fundamentals like in The Last Guardian and not having Trico’s actions make sense or be easily predictable or telegraphed. And that was a core element to a game that was in development for over 5 years. Both Gravity Rush games had awful side content that didn’t go well with what Kat was supposed to do. The quests in that game are pretty bad and the combat and abilities was also bad and you basically just used maybe 1 or 2 out of the entire array because their situational uses were rare or were outclassed.
With something like God of War all of Kratos’ abilities have a use and you’re not just dumping points into stuff that won’t be used or used once and never again.
They even went as far to improve the ability trees in Horizon so you could have alternate builds and every skill provided some level of genuine utility. This was something that Japan Studio never did for their games they fricked up the execution hard for all their projects for over a decade.
I say let Team Asobi eventually show what they’ve been working on because the two Astro bot games did not have any of the bad excess that plagued previous Japan Studio games

So then let's just compare XV to XVI. XVI is releasing into a different environment. FFXV got launched on two consoles, FFXVI got launched onto one.
FFXV launched onto two consoles that were widely available. FFXVI launched onto a console that is still PERCEIVED as impossible to acquire without scalping.
Not saying FFXVI isn't landing softer than anticipated. I'm saying that it doesn't look like it's a huge flop.
Also, we do have to remember something: FFXV, as a project, bled money. It was in development for way too long, had to be restarted multiple times, and was in such dire financial states that Square Enix was forced to put literal corporate sponsors in the game. FFXV is, if you'll remember, brought to you by Cup Noodle, Roen, Vivienne Westwood, American Express Audi and Coleman camping gear.

XIII really killed people's enthusiam for the series because no one could figure why they released 2 more games with such an unlikeable cast of characters. It was bizzare. 15 looked shit from the get go because 4 guys on a road trip just doesn't sell the adventure. I know people like to spin the narrative of "FFIX sold badly because it followed VIII", but this chart provides very clearly, in visual format, that FF games that emphasize the fantasy aspects of its setting over the sci-fi/modern aspects don't sell as well as the sci-fi/modern focused FF games.
That is of course not including XI and XIV which are which kind of in their own category.
To be honest a lot of people were already burned out with 13, they also gave 15 a try and were also burned out, so FF has been on a downward slope ever since. And the fact that they released this only on the PS5. With all that said I do think you're right, people in general just prefer that "Final Fantasy" aesthetic ala VII, VIII and X. Even though the story of IX is good, I just could not get into the setting proper. I know the chibi character model was garbage as hell. I much preferred VIII and X.

The combat looks fun anyway. It seems the combat will have more options that actually matter, like Adol channeling his inner danmaku player and dodging machine gun spell bullet things and better crowd control. I just liked the presence of the party.
Black Flag was seen as the best because it's on-land gameplay was miles better than AC3 which was a rollercoaster of scripted setpieces and it added functional non-social stealth which vibed well with some people. However during ship sections I had more attention on my phone to not fall asleep.
This is what happens when you make your games exclusively to one platform. Meanwhile Capcom is dapping on SE by putting their games on all platforms day one, building up a fanbase to their IP's to sell well.

Truly the game is so bad and awful and a movie game that they will have to release a pc port in order to save it and not put it on EGS and only put it on Steam. Now say the game, as 16 has turned out to be, turns out to be severely flawed. Some of those 3 million people who bought it while it was exclusive put out bad reviews. The 7 million other people, who would've bought it day 1 like the first 3 million, now are less likely to buy it. Whereas if it wasn't exclusive, those 7 million would've bought it at launch while nobody knew how bad it was gonna be.
So now they get less sales overall because of this. They could've put it out on every system from the get go, everyone who would've ever bought it would buy it day 1 before they could know the game would turn out to be shit, but who cares because you already got their money, no refunds :).

That's not how it works. Usually, AAA games sell like 45% on PlayStation, 45% on PC and 10% on Xbox. These percentages may vary depending on the game, I'd say Final Fantasy is more skewed towards PlayStation than most other IPs. So, even if they released the game on all three platforms, it wouldn't have sold three times as much.
That said, I do agree with the general idea of your post: reviews and especially word of mouth are more important than ever nowadays. The average videogamer is well-informed these days compared 10-20 years ago.
Imo Square will once again sell this game to Epic and make their money this way, they don't "need" to sell it to actual people. Which is weird to say, but that's their business model and seems to be working for now: they sell console exclusivity to Sony and PC exclusivity to Epic.

Japan Studio was bad at making games. It routinely screwed up basic ass fundamentals like in The Last Guardian and not having Trico’s actions make sense or be easily predictable or telegraphed. And that was a core element to a game that was in development for over 5 years. Both Gravity Rush games had awful side content that didn’t go well with what Kat was supposed to do. The quests in that game are pretty bad and the combat and abilities was also bad and you basically just used maybe 1 or 2 out of the entire array because their situational uses were rare or were outclassed.
With something like God of War all of Kratos’ abilities have a use and you’re not just dumping points into stuff that won’t be used or used once and never again.
They even went as far to improve the ability trees in Horizon so you could have alternate builds and every skill provided some level of genuine utility. This was something that Japan Studio never did for their games they fricked up the execution hard for all their projects for over a decade.
I say let Team Asobi eventually show what they’ve been working on because the two Astro bot games did not have any of the bad excess that plagued previous Japan Studio games

I think it's important to remember that the FFVII remake was a long awaited remake (nearly 20 years since the ps3 tech demo dropped) and was of one of the most beloved games of all time. That one might be a bit of an outlier.
So then let's just compare XV to XVI. XVI is releasing into a different environment. FFXV got launched on two consoles, FFXVI got launched onto one.
FFXV launched onto two consoles that were widely available. FFXVI launched onto a console that is still PERCEIVED as impossible to acquire without scalping.
Not saying FFXVI isn't landing softer than anticipated. I'm saying that it doesn't look like it's a huge flop.
Also, we do have to remember something: FFXV, as a project, bled money. It was in development for way too long, had to be restarted multiple times, and was in such dire financial states that Square Enix was forced to put literal corporate sponsors in the game. FFXV is, if you'll remember, brought to you by Cup Noodle, Roen, Vivienne Westwood, American Express Audi and Coleman camping gear.

XIII really killed people's enthusiam for the series because no one could figure why they released 2 more games with such an unlikeable cast of characters. It was bizzare. 15 looked shit from the get go because 4 guys on a road trip just doesn't sell the adventure. I know people like to spin the narrative of "FFIX sold badly because it followed VIII", but this chart provides very clearly, in visual format, that FF games that emphasize the fantasy aspects of its setting over the sci-fi/modern aspects don't sell as well as the sci-fi/modern focused FF games.
That is of course not including XI and XIV which are which kind of in their own category.
To be honest a lot of people were already burned out with 13, they also gave 15 a try and were also burned out, so FF has been on a downward slope ever since. And the fact that they released this only on the PS5. With all that said I do think you're right, people in general just prefer that "Final Fantasy" aesthetic ala VII, VIII and X. Even though the story of IX is good, I just could not get into the setting proper. I know the chibi character model was garbage as hell. I much preferred VIII and X.

The combat looks fun anyway. It seems the combat will have more options that actually matter, like Adol channeling his inner danmaku player and dodging machine gun spell bullet things and better crowd control. I just liked the presence of the party.
Black Flag was seen as the best because it's on-land gameplay was miles better than AC3 which was a rollercoaster of scripted setpieces and it added functional non-social stealth which vibed well with some people. However during ship sections I had more attention on my phone to not fall asleep.

FFXV didn't have legs, reception was mostly bad, and the dlc being canceled was a huge warning sign that the devs had no faith in the product. FFXVI has to contend with the bad taste FFXV left in everyones mouth. I have full faith in XVI being good, I'll buy it on PC, but facts are facts, most games sell most near launch, and then it's a slow trickle of sales. PC/Xbox will be a second launch day, but it's incredibly doubtful XVI will surpass XV, even with years of deep of deep price cuts and good word of mouth.

What people who don't understand shipping don't get is that SE shipped 5m back in the day because FFXV had been expensive for a lower selling price so they needed to ship more in order to break even. If they are celebrating 3m for FFXVI, it means that it was enough in order to break even. Basic economics, but shazamxisters don't understand them, they don't even know that SWTOR itself eventually made a huge profit

60 x 5 000 000 = $300 000 000
That means FFXV needed up to $300 million in order to break even, which is believable given the 10 year dev time, the reboot, console change, multiple engine change and the various development autism.
Meanwhile they shipped 3m for FFXVI, the release price is at $70:
70 x 3 000 000 = $210 000 000
Since they are celebrating it, it means they already broke even, which makes sense given the development of FFXVI was faster and with less troubles. SE is a AAA company, if they wanted to ship 5m to retailers they would have managed to. Basic profit strategy. By the same logic of shazamxisters Bloodborne was a failure that nobody wanted since they only sold 1 million at launch

Say the game is exclusive to one console. Say only 3 million people buy it because of this. Say 10 million would've bought it if it wasn't exclusive.
Now say the game, as 16 has turned out to be, turns out to be severely flawed. Some of those 3 million people who bought it while it was exclusive put out bad reviews. The 7 million other people, who would've bought it day 1 like the first 3 million, now are less likely to buy it. Whereas if it wasn't exclusive, those 7 million would've bought it at launch while nobody knew how bad it was gonna be.
So now they get less sales overall because of this. They could've put it out on every system from the get go, everyone who would've ever bought it would buy it day 1 before they could know the game would turn out to be shit, but who cares because you already got their money, no refunds :).
But instead most of those people aren't gonna buy it now when it finally ceases to be an exclusive because the few who did get to play at launch tell them it was bad and to not buy it.

That's not how it works. Usually, AAA games sell like 45% on PlayStation, 45% on PC and 10% on Xbox. These percentages may vary depending on the game, I'd say Final Fantasy is more skewed towards PlayStation than most other IPs. So, even if they released the game on all three platforms, it wouldn't have sold three times as much.
That said, I do agree with the general idea of your post: reviews and especially word of mouth are more important than ever nowadays. The average videogamer is well-informed these days compared 10-20 years ago.
Imo Square will once again sell this game to Epic and make their money this way, they don't "need" to sell it to actual people. Which is weird to say, but that's their business model and seems to be working for now: they sell console exclusivity to Sony and PC exclusivity to Epic.

99.9% of PCs out there couldn't run the game. Only the fastest SSDs on the planet, like those in the PS5 can handle a game like this. It'll never ever be on PC because the average PC gamer has a SATA SSD or even HDD and that's just too slow.
