No, you have to be born with it. It's in their bloodline that they can all inherit it, but only one can inherit it at a time, since there's only one eikon for each element (supposed to be, Ifrit is obviously some bullshit). The king didn't have it and apparently the only real reason why they are even considered royalty is because the original chosen in their family was made into a duke for having it, then became royalty for it later. The likely reason pops didn't have it was because his father was still in possession of it when he was alive.

That's exactly it. Clive may have been born while the grandfather was around too, preventing him from inheriting it. From the demo and the kid repeating how the whole situation with only their family inheriting it seeming unfair, I'm guessing it's gonna be some major reveal that their family early on did something to ensure that they got it throughout their bloodline. Either that, or some secret to gaining an eikon's ability was found out in the past, their arch duke ancestor kept it a secret, and that's why other families don't just inherit it, while they conveniently pass it down through their bloodline.

Wow, I wasn't sold on the game until the demo but it's really good. Combat was fun but I still need to try the bonus mode with the Benedikta fight. The graphics look very good in game and performance was not really an issue, performance only seemed to struggle in certain parts of the dominant fight.
I also looked up most of the story bits available and watching the trailers it seems like the central plot may be about Clive destroying all the mothercrystals and that breaking the cycle of dominants and since he's doing that it would explain how he comes into conflict with every Eikon.
Not really supported by any evidence but I think Anabela may be part of whatever group is manipulating behind the scenes to cause conflict pitting the empire against Rosaria.

anabela is straightforwardly allied with sanbreque, the kingdom with bahamut. she has a similar hair color to what we've seen of other characters from that kingdom and it was probably a political marriage.

It looks more like they need to learn how to control it when they first transforms. Joshua's was obviously his first time and even Phoenix flapping its wings after the initial transformation looked like it was feeling Joshua's sickness for a bit. Ifrit is obviously a unique eikon in itself, so that's a whole other beast. I'm assuming they have their own minds as eikons but don't really when being used as transformation summons. It's more like their powers are being harnessed during those battles.

Its stated by evil horny mom that phoenix didnt pick Clive, it could be a metaphor, as in fate/nature/luck not making him a dominant, or it could be related to the rituals they were supposed to conduct in the phoenix fortress or whatever the last location name was. If its the latter, it might be in the form of some oracle, but it would imply even further eikons have their own will. Im also intrigued since I thought eikons would be deities, but it seems to be an independent pantheon, eikons are just magic associated with the crystals I guess. So I only played the first part since I'd prefer to do the 2nd part when the game comes out but I never got used to the parries. Was it literally just press the attack button right when the enemy was attacking or were there only specific moves that could be parried? I couldn't for the life of me parry the dragoon when he was high jumping even though I tried and just defaulted to dodging.

I have a feeling Joshua's going to be the big villain by the end. His personality and desire to save people like the Phoenix might transform into a desire to let everything be destroyed so that life can have a fresh start (like other ff villains). I think he realizes in the castle that his Mother is responsible for the attack on Phoenix gate so he probably feels betrayed. Then he gets murdered by Ifrit who he realizes is Clive (albeit not in control but still).
The end result would be Clive having to kill his brother again, except willingly to mirror the prologue where he lost control of Ifrit (Thus the title logo of Ifrit vs. Phoenix).
Would also lend credence to the many references of Cain and Abel from the bible if anyone has that picture.

In the Ascension trailer Clive says a line "you're not the only one who has seen their world crumble around them" and the implication is that he's saying it to get the dominant of an enemy kingdom on his side or smth to that effect, but if you remember early reveals Yoshida talked about ruins being strewn across the world that once flew in the sky and belonged to an civilization that will play a role in the story. I suspect they were also the ones that built those giant hollow earth pillars since they are quite conspicuous and them being featured in the first eikon battle definitely lends itself to many popular FF and JRPG story traditions
The "real baddie" will be some of that, but Joshua will re-appear as an antagonist
