Very meh, the cooldowns really make the combat boring, your 1 4 hit string for the entire game is unbearable, making the charge sword move the same as your basic string makes it a chore to use since if you want to finish a combo with it you have to stand there awkardly and wait for the sword to catch fire. Easily the best ff combat system (SoP not counted) but that’s a low bar. Personally it doesn’t have enough stylish action for me, having a launcher that’s not on a cooldown and making your basic string/weapon swap when you switch eikons would’ve gone a long way. But as it is I’ll sadly not be buying it. Seems I’ll have to wait for ninja Gaiden reboot/4 or dmc6 for proper air combos.

More than sure the other Eikon battles won't play out as such. It wasn't much of a panzer dragoon segment to begin with. You had two buttons and reticle. In PD you actually moved the dragon and had more than just "Shoot" as an action. Shit was better off as a very short cutscene than 3-5 solid mins of "Mash fire and Dodge 3 times".

I'm not usually a fan of big action sequences, especially in a game that's whole thing is about how good the combat is, but it had just enough action to keep me interested and the music was really good.
Hopefully all the Eikon fights can be that good.
they should hopefully hold up with each eikon battle playing differently, even for like an on rails shooter the phoenix and ifrit one was still pretty enjoyable

The intro does a really good job of taking nothing off the table. There's no reason for the player to believe any character is safe from death after that intro.
Clive/Jill/Torgal has been shown to still be alive in the post-post-timeskip though, so we can assume they'll be alive most of the time. Not sure about Cid though.

She's from a line that's produces a number of Phoenixs, She and the Archduke are cousins, she's trying to make a healthier/better Phoenix which is why she tries to frick the Archduke before he leaves for War, to get pregnant with a Phoenix to replace Joshua.
This entire scene had the same feeling and energy of this scene.

I hope it isn’t like this for the entire game. I noticed the excessive amount of cutscenes too. The game is really good but I could do without so many damn cutscenes.
There are only 11h cutscenes apparently. So I guess that once the game opens and you will be busy doing side stuff they won't be as present.

I just played it in story mode with 3 of the 4 n00b accessories equipped for shits and grins. Its pretty much god mode. Overall, I don't hate the combat but it doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game yet other than some familiar monsters and the Eikons.

Joshua's mother isn't of his fathers bloodline. So any child she has with the emperor won't be the Phoenix Dominant. From the demo Clives father never got to be the dominant because his father still had it while he ruled. Then he croaked. and Clive failed the test or whatever to become the new dominant but his brother Joshua didn't.
Chances are the new child is a dominant just not Phoenix.

It's also possible that Clive might be able to transform into the other Eikons, though I could also see that being limited to Phoenix since Ifrit ate chunks of it. I'm kinda curious as to what the lore explanation behind Clive's abilities are. If it's as simple as getting blessed by multiple Dominants, you'd think that's something that would have been tried before. My bet is on him having the blood of the precursor civilization and we'll find out they were working on a way to either steal an Eikon's powers or for a way for someone to harness the powers of more than one.

Hooded man is Hades' dominant. The Astral era is ending and the Umbral era will bring a dark version of all the Eikons.
Ifrit for Phoenix, Typhon for Bahamut, Kujata for Titan, and Fat Chocobo for Geruda.

Dion's half-brother. Anabella had another kid with the king of Sanbreque, and it's likely that he inherited Phoenix.

Liked it. Combat was smooth and responsive. The Eikon challenge bit showed how indepth the system can get while also showing that there is much more you don't even get access to. Sad we didn't get to see how crafting works. I assume it's just for tonics and maybe +1ing equipment or some shit though.

Performance in performance mode is bad but that's more of a hardware complaint. Needs a hard mode from the get go and I know it doesn't so meh, trash mob packs are "Why?" unless they start chucking like 10+ because you gunsmoke them in 1 eikon ability, story seems fine for now, I can handwave the hefty non-gameplay since it's literally an FF prologue section. The other game mode in the demo showed that there is gameplay so probably fine once you get going.

He doesn't get the eikon. He is blessed with the power of the Phoenix, but the Phoenix itself is granted to Joshua. In her eyes, Clive is wasted sperm. The dad genuinely loves Clive and Joshua but their mother only sees them as tools.
He wasn't born as Phoenix's dominant, but even then she doesn't even seem to give a shit that Joshua was dead just "It's a shame."

im not, i never touch final fantasy game due to their game nature of being turn based combat. I played game demo yesterday and it was way too different than i expected. You do know you can do Magic Burst in between every hit of the basic combo, right? There's also the charged blade attack which can launch enemies, charged magic, Stingers and Helmbreakers. The combat is only as boring as you make it, and that's before adding Eikon abilities into the mix.

The demo at the event (rather than the one we played) was version 1.03 rather than our demo which is 1.01. Seems to indicate that we might have a day 1 patch, would be nice to get some performance optimizations and also some more settings options to tone down the motion blur and stuff.
Disc copies running decently without any game-breaking bugs might happen, but the absolute statement of "no day 1 patch" is very unlikely to be true. If they've still been doing testing and performance improvements there's no actual reason to withhold the new build.

The problem it seems was that the game needed to be in the hands of people to actually get how the game rolls. They put out a lot of trailers and stuff and yet so many people denied it was possible. The demo just shut a lot of assumptions up.
Speaking as someone who was in from the announcement I can definitely see how the trailers weren't the greatest. The intent was to just show flashy bits and dangle the keys so to speak, but I think it was a little overwhelming for people. Just seeing it play out in real time however is what has really grabbed A LOT of people. I think the ending climax of Ifrit vs. Phoenix just really amps it all up to 11.
So is the dog ring one of the cheat items in the demo or is it fine to leave on?
it's the least cheaty one imo, but i think its fine to just leave it off and have torgal do nothing, seems like a min-max kinda thing

is the game worth playing on a 1440p or 4K screen? in 1080p, Graphics mode is sharper and clearer than Performance mode, but don't know if it's worth going higher than 1080p
My only fear is the difficulty, I know that Yoshida wants it to be a game of mass appeal that can be enjoyed by someone who hasn't even touched at controller ever, but I think it will be excessive.
Optional content like the trials they talked about and the ng+ mode will probably be quite decent there, but the story is looking to be a complete cakewalk.
i doubt the game will be that challenging until unlocking the new difficulty option after completing the game. maybe the endgame hunts or superboss will be difficult, but other than that no. same as every other modern game (including Elden Ring where only Malenia was hard, and maybe a few other bosses at most)
It should be a cakewalk for anyone skilled at the game. A single death in a casual game like FF16 means you're a complete shitter of a player.

I'm really glad they met my expectations with the games combat mechanics. I"m not sure of the quality of the enemy and boss designs yet, but the mechanics Clive has himself are incredible. I watched some combo videos and the game is already nuts. My only fears for the game are the lack of penalty for spamming cool downs, and the QTEs maybe being too frequent.
actually scratch that i'm moronic, adding a penalty for using your moves would ruin combo potential. I'm dumb ignore that

it won't be the best FF game, it's solid, it'll score around 85-88 at best. GOTY is most definitely TOTK, this will win some other award tho, like music maybe.
ToTK and Starfield are gonna sweep the big stuff but FFXVI will win best action game and maybe music as well.

I'd just say I've had a PS5 since day one. I got it cause I wanna play games on it. Not only one or two games. EVERY game that comes to the PS5 is something I'll be looking at. It's my primary gaming device for all "AAA" experiences. The Switch is my primary Nintendo device. PC is my primary device for PC centric games like FFXIV or Civilization or CSGO and Starfield later this year.
