It's probably still joshua. The Phoenix is implied to have a mastery over death so we'll see the kid again.
The "ritual" is just putting in a earring and trying to see if your DNA will give you authorization to beam down a primal from the Allagan moon-orbiting base.
It has to be that Ifrit and Phoenix were combined at some point where they were a single entity.

Lets see, first you have the prologue of the real game. You get to play a little, meet all the characters, understand the setting and the motivation for clive to do the shit. You empathize with him for everything and you want to know whats mistery behind joshua death and who was that hood guy. It is perfect honestly, nice cliffhanger and it establishes everything.
Now, it is filled with cutscenes, thats why they added the eikonic challenge that lets you have a taste of the future in case you need, it is not even mandatory.
SO its like, 2 demos in one. I thought it was great.

It is quite front-loaded with cutscenes, yes, which is why they specifically addressed that during the celebration stream and put in the Eikonic Challenge part as well. And the gameplay in that part is good but the complaints that surfaced back when that part first got shown are still valid - shit's too dark and the QTEs have no fricking reason to exist. So far the good heavily outweighs the bad, though.
It has a very good shot at winning music and narrative of the year but is it GOTY material? We'll find out when it comes out or leaks early.

Even if the game wsas perfect, it wont win GOTY, at least not in the Game Awards. But music is probably a no brainer, and story might be worth an award as well. Just the prologue alone is more interesting and has better dialogue than almost anything vidya related

But you can't make the same claims for Final Fantasy 15 or 16 and the rest of the series. But you could for the prior instalments that actually were the same as each other.

The underlying mechanics underneath ATB and a non-ATB system is just that in the non-ATB system the time between turns is instantly skipped, while the ATB systems fluffs out the space in-between with wait-time filler.

I was expecting some of that as well, and still found the combat system fun. Yes, it isnt as complex or hard as some of my favorite games like Stranger of Paradise, Nioh 2 or Ninja Gaiden (I've played DMC but none is among my favorites) but it has a fun moveset, it still has basic stuff like stinger, jump cancels, etc. And we havent seen the full skillset yet. About the difficulty, that bothers me the most but it isnt a deal breaker and Im excited about arcade and hard modes. Also, in terms of lore, story and characters, Im hooked, I've been waiting for something like this in the franchise since I played FF Tactics in 2003. Music is amazing and thered a lot of spectale, people call it superfluous but FF was always supposed to go big on that department since the older days

I could have sworn some old bit of ad copy on the website mentioned Dark Eikons, but maybe I just misremembered.
Ifrit (the one that kills Joshua) was called the Dark Eikon at some point and that it's appearance caused the other Eikons to go berserk but I think that information and a lot of other shit got removed at some point

When you program a turn based game and an ATB game, you use unit speed parameters that ticks up until turns are granted. In both cases.
