It's because you can't make really good combos thanks to the limited arte slots, with half of them locked to midair usage.
Among other things that were repeated, Arise wasn't designed as a Tales game to start with. It really shows.

I'm not sure why people are confused about the interest in this game's sales numbers. The fact of the matter is, FF isn't an RPG series anymore. If there's any chance at all that FF will ever be an RPG series again, it will only happen if SE doesn't feel rewarded by their decision to turn the series into action games. So for those who actually want the erstwhile premier RPG series in game to actually be an RPG series again, the current direction has to fail. It's pretty simple.
I haven't bought a new Final Fantasy game in 17 years. Children who were born on the day I last purchased a new FF release are driving now. The last time I cared enough to actually engage in arguments about Final Fantasy games was around the time of FF7 Part 1, whenever that was (I can't even remember anymore, lol). Watching clips of FF16 on Youtube, I don't see any differences between this game and any other generic action game that I see my nephews play, or that my friend sometimes plays on the PS5 when he comes over for a weekend visit, except for, perhaps, its very unappealing Western medieval setting (and even that is more generic than interesting). There's nothing distinguishable about it, and it bears no resembling to anything I would call a "role-playing game." Plenty of action games these days have levels and experience points. This is nothing new or unique.
No disrespect to those who have replaced me as SE's intended customers for their new action blockbuster series. I've gotten over it. But do be aware that you might be replaced, too, someday. If they can replace me, they can replace you. You're just a number to them, same as I was. So you might want to be a bit more careful when antagonizing those fans you've replaced. You might find yourself needing their help someday. SE doesn't care about you any more than it cared about them, and if the winds of change blow in another direction in 10 or so years when FF17 comes out, you might be finding yourself left out in the cold.

We had one entire console gen about one FF character (Lightning). The first one didn't have the best rep but then they made two more games about her for whatever reason.
Then they finally release XV which also turned out to be a shitshow and that game was DLC bait. That's it. That was FF in the last gen.
Now compare it to the mainline games/gens on the NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2.

Regardless, I didn't enjoy it even as much as Garuda. I didn't love his design, didn't love the arena, didn't love the lead up, and thought his moveset was really easy to avoid. Frick the need to hire English voice actors, translations, rework scenes. Just make it for the real audience, and the monumental 17, the new Generation's 7.
I don't think it's a bad first try at a mainline refresh. It's been over a decade since FF has been able to actually look forward and progress the vision. The Eikon fights are bombastic and defining moments, but the QTE's are terrible and ridiculously easy, you will never fail them, which makes me question why they exist at all
It needs a party you can switch on the fly, so you can line up queues of attacks, more like 7R. Classes/jobs you can customize for each party member. Return Eikons as summons that cost points. With a properly connected world map, larger city areas that are actually useful. Airship with modern tech would be really great and bring back a sense of wonder to your exploration through the air above the map. Random enemy ambushes. it was too easy to walk past enemies and in a game like this you should be fighting all the time and be ready for anything to pop out from behind a tree. More interactivity with the world, vendors, items, sleeping at inns, bonuses for eating food, some of the things from XV that worked. a few mini games and races and other side quest content other than fetching to help diversify the loop
perhaps with 7R part 2 some of these elements will work and that will influence the next game in a positive way, without the developers thinking they need to throw away everything that they built for XVI in order to make a new game

I'm not sure why people are confused about the interest in this game's sales numbers. The fact of the matter is, FF isn't an RPG series anymore. If there's any chance at all that FF will ever be an RPG series again, it will only happen if SE doesn't feel rewarded by their decision to turn the series into action games. So for those who actually want the erstwhile premier RPG series in game to actually be an RPG series again, the current direction has to fail. It's pretty simple.

The last time I cared enough to actually engage in arguments about Final Fantasy games was around the time of FF7 Part 1, whenever that was (I can't even remember anymore, lol). Watching clips of FF16 on Youtube, I don't see any differences between this game and any other generic action game that I see my nephews play, or that my friend sometimes plays on the PS5 when he comes over for a weekend visit, except for, perhaps, its very unappealing Western medieval setting (and even that is more generic than interesting). There's nothing distinguishable about it, and it bears no resembling to anything I would call a "role-playing game." Plenty of action games these days have levels and experience points. This is nothing new or unique.
No disrespect to those who have replaced me as SE's intended customers for their new action blockbuster series. I've gotten over it. But do be aware that you might be replaced, too, someday. If they can replace me, they can replace you. You're just a number to them, same as I was. So you might want to be a bit more careful when antagonizing those fans you've replaced. You might find yourself needing their help someday. SE doesn't care about you any more than it cared about them, and if the winds of change blow in another direction in 10 or so years when FF17 comes out, you might be finding yourself left out in the cold.

Idk man, I played the game I just didnt find the majority of it fun. The boss fights are mostly cool (although Barnabas was extremely disappointing), but that can't hold up a 50-70 hour game

Normal people have no chance of enjoying this game. The only way you can like it is if you've poisoned your brain with hundreds of hours of anime to the point where you can't recognize what a good story, good voice acting, or good music is. The gameplay is pretty much agreed upon to be bad, even by its defenders, with the former three propping it up. But all normal people will think those are bad too.

I don't think it's a bad first try at a mainline refresh. It's been over a decade since FF has been able to actually look forward and progress the vision. The Eikon fights are bombastic and defining moments, but the QTE's are terrible and ridiculously easy, you will never fail them, which makes me question why they exist at all
It needs a party you can switch on the fly, so you can line up queues of attacks, more like 7R. Classes/jobs you can customize for each party member. Return Eikons as summons that cost points. With a properly connected world map, larger city areas that are actually useful. Airship with modern tech would be really great and bring back a sense of wonder to your exploration through the air above the map. Random enemy ambushes. it was too easy to walk past enemies and in a game like this you should be fighting all the time and be ready for anything to pop out from behind a tree. More interactivity with the world, vendors, items, sleeping at inns, bonuses for eating food, some of the things from XV that worked. a few mini games and races and other side quest content other than fetching to help diversify the loop
perhaps with 7R part 2 some of these elements will work and that will influence the next game in a positive way, without the developers thinking they need to throw away everything that they built for XVI in order to make a new game
