ys isn't a mashers game. every ys boss fight is 90% dodging and waiting for the one opening you can throw a charge attack in, at least on real difficulties. you do not have to mash the button 8 times to do damage
Uh no every boss fight in Ys IX is just mashing the enormously long invincibility button and then mashing your attack button. It's utterly braindead. Fails at being a good action game and fails at being a good RPG.
It was only ever mashy in the Felghana engine cause you'd press attacks a lot whilst running enemies through to rack up damage/exp potion bonuses. Bosses were a different story though.

I always thought that it was a term borrowed from games like Dungun & Dragons adapted to video games. But it seems to me like the games we often call JRPGs are not actually RPGs at all. Is Zelda an RPG? Most would say no but it's basically a copy paste of a D&D campaign. Is FF10 an RPG? Most would say 'of course it is', but whose role am I assuming here? The character (who they are) and their class are already determined for me. Very confusing.

Going casual DMC was a bad idea for the franchise because RPG gamers tend to like relaxed, but not necessarily easy games. You get tried of looking at XVI's cutscene-like combat pretty quick. Zelda is relaxed and offers a gimmick that can be complex if you want it to. Skyrim is a game where off your brain and roam the world.
Ys IX is the only ARPG in the picture, the others are action based games with a pinch of the most bare minimum RPGs elements.
