Final Fantasy needed an objectively amazing mainline game to put the IP and game series back on track and getting a great, borderline amazing entry with Final Fantasy XVI just isn't good enough. Yes, it sucks that the bar is that high for the game but with the game using the remaining prestige of the IP and how much time, money and resources that were poured into making the game, it needed to do way better and didn't. And public reception is not going to make this game any better, I really doubt all of the controversies that were discussed about the game will clear up and make it all of the sudden amazing to the massed, especially on the gameplay front where people complained about turn based vs action gameplay. And this is just on release for the PS5. PC is a whole another can of worms and I'm not even going to get into how terrible the port can be or the exclusivity bullshit Square Enix is going to do with Epic Games.
These opinions are exactly how I feel about it. I'm sure it's good, but XVI needed to be far more than "good." That was the entire goal, Yoshida talks endlessly in interviews about 16 being a last chance for the series, how hard they're fighting to win back public opinion, etc etc. FF16 is an incredibly high-investment game, and it ends up just being 'good' when the target was excellent, outstanding, amazing. Sales are a completely different subject and I won't speak on them right now because no info, but I'd say FF16 already failed. I wish it didn't.

I think even most negative reviews I've read have praised the combat. Sidequests seem to be hit or miss even in positive reviews some give decent rewards and have decent narrative but plenty are kinda basic and forgettable
