She is but her basic attacks is too slow and her charged attack just takes way too long. The time it takes her to attack is essentially the same amount of time it takes cloud and red to build up a bar of ATB and use a spell to knock a flying enemy down. Aerith needs a speed bump or something because playing her is a slog

It's just not fun. The pacing of battle is off, dodging is useless, blocking still takes massive damage, and parrying requires such precision it rivals bloodborne. The inworld physics objects littered all over the place feels like shit to traverse around. Chocobo movement isn't fun at all, its either painfully slow, or too fricking fast to grab all the items on the ground and end up slamming into a wall. Synergy attacks literally feel worse than XV and require the enemy to be completely still and each character to have synergies ready (there is no way to tell what the frick builds up synergy meter either) so you can at best get one synergy move off per boss battle where it does frick all damage.

dude you can interrupt animations with the parry really easily. you only need to just press Triangle to switch to Punisher right before a hit and you will hit a parry. you can also do it by just blocking at the right time. but the easiest way is to switch to Punisher
So if you're in punisher stance it auto parries or do i still need to time R1?
Punisher will parry any basic attack just from blocking. That's how it was in Remake.
you can get a parry attack by pressing triangle or by holding block inside of Punisher yes. But you can also get a parry without Punisher by using perfect timing now, that is new. That's probably what you are struggling with. But switching to Punisher itself will act as a parry

The combat does feel worse than remake to me. It feels all spastic and shit. Especially Clouds new version of the punisher stance.
I don't like new punisher but I do like the speed of combat now, plus the synergy abilities and skills are great. Aerith gets some weird teleport by default, Tifa gets aerials because people launch her in the air. There is just so much new that it feels nice going back to it and having things to do at all moments.
The only thing I agree with you feels like total ass is Cloud's new punisher combo. Barret and Aerith, for example, feel identical.

All the cool shit I had to look up online for the lore of the game to make sense. I wasn't even all that shocked about aerith dying (didn't have her in the party) and I didn't give a frick about Tifa romance either. The worldbuilding in the game was great, the story was great, weapon boss fights were great. The love triangle was a fricking background I couldn't give two shits about. The key for story is to explain things what fans actually might ask about (who is Nelo Angelo, oh it's Vergil), (why did Dante get into this biz, oh he just has been killing demons for years beforehand), (how did Vergil become Nelo Angelo, oh he went to Hell by himself and fought Mundus).
All of that plus building on the foundation of what made the first game good is also the key.
I think with a lot of those, it's a clear line back to those games that it's trying to be a prequel to.
With a lot of the FF stuff, you're just left head scratching with the idea of "oh it's that? I mean I guess that makes sense despite not having any throughline back to the original game". I get the sense they ended up making a lot more as they went along than having a clear idea in place of just wanted to expand upon prior games while making it it's own thing.
Games like MGS 3 can still entirely stand on it's own. Dirge of Cerberus? Crisis Core? I don't know
Dirge is a shitty TPS with a silly story that makes no sense in Disc 3, CC could have been great if not for; the Gackt wank, EVERYONE gets a Kingdom Hearts Seph wing, Genesis as a character and his 'silly' arc revolving around dying throughout the game because he was Liquid Sephiroth basically (even the color on his clothes were fading which is silly).
Dirge could be a silly what if story, but the game was bad. CC is a silly prequel and the gameplay is ...fine? Both of those games alone make Hojo seem more vital to everything than he was in OG 7 aside from making the reunion a thing.

Final Fantasy has always balanced free exploration with linear sections, adding more linear sections is not a good thing. The entire reason FF7 has the legacy it does is because of how much of the story they let be lore instead of story. That's where half the Cloud/Zack originally came from, all of Vincents story was optional etc. Forcing all the lore and sideshit to the front makes it a snoozefest instead of letting you enjoy the meat of the game and exploring side stuff/thinking about lore when you choose

I don't really think that's entirely true. It hasn't really been that way since 8 or 9. You could argue 10 still had the Calm Lands or whatever, and 12 sort of got back to more exploration. But they've been gradually moving towards pigeon holing you into linear story segments.
