I can understand wanting to make him a hero. A lot of people want that and he could be spun in that direction considering his relationship with Jenova and apparent spontaneous episode of madness.
Also, there really is no reason not to subvert Aerith's death this time so she almost certainly won't die. A lot of fans want her to live and this is a chance to make it happen in canon.

The entire point of the first remake game was to establish that events are no longer set in stone anon.
Aerith living in this timeline is the most obvious and expected conclusion of that setup. Everyone wants that and will pay money to see it because Aerith dying was a very big deal back in the day.
The same goes for playable hero Sephiroth and Zack living to a lesser extent.
Square just wants money and it only makes sense to make these things happen while pushing the villain role to Jenova and Genesis, one of whom is a monster and the other is a git no one likes.
It's not about the story anymore, that was done and over with in the original game, this is just about fan service.

Game split between Cloud/Zack levels. Genesis is Zack's Sephiroth. Everyone is controlled by JENOVA: confirmed (I mean, fan theories are confirmed, but also the final boss is "JENOVA: confirmed"). Push Sephy's murderspree off of Aerith onto Tifa but that fricks things up so we have to timeline jump to Zack's where Aerith dies again.

Aerith knows that too because both she and Sephiroth can see the future that happened in the first game. So, Aerith will not die in the Forgotten City. She'll die in some other part of the story.

Part 3 will be one long Sephiroth encounter. There will be a DLC where you play as Cid that's way better than the main game and a DLC where you play as Cait Sith playing rigged poker games at the Golden Saucer casino.
