Cloud's mom? She's barely a character, Cloud didn't visit her, and he has no distinct memories of her during that visit. She just dies off screen. As a character she's kind of an after thought. If anything she's only there to be a big red flag that maybe Cloud's more messed up than we think.
Which is all why it would've made since to expand her character enough to show her being killed, since expanding upon OG is the main premise of the Remake trilogy

Now that I think back, FF7 was one of the first games I played as a kid that had a lot of swearing. Cid especially was always calling something a piece of shit or telling someone they were pissing him off. Even M rated games like Resident Evil or whatever didn't have anything like that going on.
The only games I can think of that had cussing like it were Duke Nukem, GTA, and the Fallout games. It was amazing how much FFVII was able to get away with since the average M rated game usually only used damn, hell, or bastard in those days.

Hell even her letting go was as well. But thing is, positive resolutions work best when you go through shit to earn them. Aerith dying was meaningful because it sucked ass. It made killing Sephiroth more impactful because you hated the homosexual. Then Cloud moving on to be with his childhood gf was meaningful because he had suffered loss and moved on to have a positive relationship. Tifa and Cloud were very vanilla too so it made it nice for people who were okay with it. I honestly think the worst change was to Zach. He existing as a posthumous character meant more then him being alive. Being an inspiration to Cloud was important to Cloud's character AND to Zach himself because of WHY Zach was an inspiration to Cloud. I would argue for all of Crisis Core's faults that making Zach more fleshed out wasn't one of them because he still died so when you saw all he did and who he was it added to the impact of him being a dead character. An inspiration. Now all that's gone for the sake of feelies that a bunch of normalgays who probably never even watched Advent Fricking Children even much less played the ACTUAL GAME. Hell they probably even didn't watch a streamer do it. These are the homosexuals that this is done for. So they can say 10 years from now that the REAL FF7 had a unilaterally happy ending where the heckin Thanos expy got wrecked by the Phantom Thieves. I'm absolutely livid. FF7 was ART. I don't know why the frick there wasn't a scene or something where Jessie asks Tifa if it's okay to jump Cloud's bones. Like, give Tifa this shitty moment where she pretends she doesn't care and Cloud asks her about it later. "Did you say it was okay for Jessie to grab my dick?" and they could argue about their feelings. Nothing happens because Jessie dies but it sets up Cloud and Tifa talking about their relationship. Tifa could just say she wanted him to be happy given that it seemed like he didn't want to be with her and Cloud can fumble with a response.

The FF7 twist is a bit moronic when you consider how easily it could have been avoided.
It's not romantic angst. They're arguing over who's memory is wrong. I will say though that her not being a complete and utter passenger in the plot is a welcome change.
It's a bit curious though. I'm not really sure what the initial trigger for a lot of this is. In Remake, Cloud was being more dickish than he was in the original game, trying to kill Johnny and later Reno. Why is he suddenly more violent in this timeline than he was originally? He never tried to kill Reno before, so what changed?
This sudden shift in behavior is likely the impetus for why Tifa's more cautious and wary around Cloud. Barret didn't kick Cloud off the team in the original timeline, but I'm thinking that the reason he did here was because Tifa didn't try at hard to vouch for him, likely for her reservations about Cloud caused by the earlier Johnny incident. She doesn't trust Cloud as much now, and for good reason, but the trigger that caused Cloud's sudden shift in behavior goes completely unaddressed. Cloud is just more violent for no reason and it's this that causes the timeline to go off the rails.

There's a believable tone and reaction to the loss in FF7 that makes it feel more real and grounded, like it's based on someone's actual experience with losing a loved one, and that's something that's hard to find. A lot of media is pretty overly melodramatic or shrugs off loss.
When replaying FF7 I teared up when Aerith does her dream message to Cloud since she knows or thinks this is a huge risk and she might never come back. Aerith is a good empathetic person, and she's cut down in her prime, and that's it. Ther'es no go going back.

Western AAA dev might be soulless slop designed by committee to appeal to the largest number of people possible, but Japanese AAA dev is plagued by arrogant “auteurs” that think they’re god’s gift to man.
I suppose the former will always be worse but the latter is frankly more frustrating.
Breaking even, especially in the manner you described, would be a catastrophic flop that would seriously call into question the scope of the third entry.

The company is propped up entirely by gacha and MMO money. Their AAA releases have almost exclusively been shoveling money into a fire for the past decade.
This is the path they're set on. You really have to envy people like Nomura and Kitase, who never have to perform or be responsible for anything ever again after they cut their teeth under Sakaguchi in the 90s. Both of them have almost exclusively presided over flops and "barely broke even" projects for upwards of a decade and yet they still manage projects like a middle school gym class.
