This game has one of the nicest explorations of fate. Everyone gets caught up in the time loop element of this but the nicest parts are the fated relationships. Laguna’s fate to become Ellone’s adoptive father which links him and his son together. Also Laguna not ending up with Rinoa’s mother which would mean neither Squall nor Rinoa would be born

It died with Sakaguichi.
It died with Spirits Within after X. Sakaguchi got the boot, Square got absorbed by Enix, FF got the cash cow treatment and the rest is history.
