FF8s final boss makes infinitely more sense than FF9s. Even with R=U being debunked. And FF9 ruined triple triad.
It's hard to compare FF8 to FF9 though. FF7 would be a better choice but obviously FF7 blows 8 out of the water. All I'll say is that after 9 they stopped the crystal fantasy bs and went back to whatever formula they had for 7/8.
FF9 does have a superior leveling/battle system although me personally I prefer the three man team over the 4. FF9 also did the whole trance thing plot very well. I enjoy seeing villains have things like a "limit break". I just prefer the more mature feel 8 has. Plus Idk why 9 made everyone a manlet again. Especially when amaranth(I think that's his name I don't remember buff guy with red dreads) was normal height. Steiner looks like a chibi knight. Yeah 9 does alot of things better but the plot and tone and setting for 8 is why I prefer it over 9. Melodies of life was beautiful but eyes on me is just more my thing

Out of all the FF games before going 3D FF9 is the easiest, most casual and braindead. I like the art, music, characters but let's be real. FF9 is barely a game. It does everything for you. You got no choice whatsoever on how to build the characters in any way. The Sidequests are shit, the story is shit, the combat is shit... Both FF7 and 8 are way better games than 9 in basically every way.

You have to make hard choices about whether to gain the ability on equipment or whether to swap out for new equipment.
And then you only have a limited amount of crystals for those skills.

you can also just grind to learn the abilities, I just finished a playthrough last month and I was wearing shit gear for a good portion into disc3 just trying to make sure I was getting all of the abilities. Didn't really know some of the later gear still has older abilities on it though. There's not many hard choices when you can over-grind it but for any kind of speedrun then sure
