Likely a matter of timing. One of it's biggest issues, living in the shadow of the rising PS2 meant that while square was dumping more of their eggs into that basket it freed up the staff to make something they really wanted with a less watchful gaze.
It was nostalgiabait before everything became nostalgiabait. That being said, it's extremely effective nostalgiabait. Would be the best FF game except: >kind of rushed once you get to disc 3 >pace of combat feels off >trance
>nostalgiabait
yeah, ff9 is 100% carried by two or three references to previous ff games that it has in there. those are the only things people like about it yep

Dude, I like FF9. I think it's one of the best FF titles. It also was absolutely a throwback to the older aesthetic of the SNES era after going full sci-fi with 7 and 8.
That's not a factor to why most people who liked it like it. And it's a throwback all the way back, to FF1, meaning you wouldn't appreciate it as much unless you grew up playing NES which a lot of fans wouldn't have.
>The best of them all.

Wait, you're serious?
Will the remake surpass it
Maybe, but the remake would need a lot of steampunk airships, and more steampunk environments etc.
Trivial quality of life improvements and furry shit.
The audience was not particularly demanding.
