Nah I agree it probably is a sequel in some sense since they already have knowledge of the future and all. If anything it's at least a reboot of sorts because it now includes shit from the whole compilation.
But they've said time and time again it will all wrap up with the story having the same ending so as different as it can be, there is only one way it could possibly end anyway unless they've been lying all the way through (and not just omitting the truth like they have been thus far). They haven't been "vague" about this specifically. They keep saying "we're getting THERE, the story is not changing, what is changing is HOW we get there" basically, so.
There is a thrill of knowing what will happen but not the how. Sometimes the denial too.

Hence why the most capable clone of all, Cloud, is sent to retrieve it. If any part of Jenova was to pull this off without being forever destroyed, it's the one within Cloud. That and the fun factor for Sephiroth to puppeteer his nemesis around and break him down further.

The "fight against destiny" is about meteor. The party thinks meteor destroying everything is the bleak future they cant escape.
Not just meteor, they got visions of her death too. OG FF7's story, which is the will of the planet, is portrayed as the "bad" future in this game.

Game begins with the group going through the Glacier, shortened version. This is how they justify losing all materia in the beginning, all seized by Shinra.
After that, whole section with WEAPONs and recovering makodunked Cloud.
After Cloud is back in action, they all discuss about how Wutai has a WEAPON research group and a live specimen, the group travels there at Yuffie's behest.
Once there, she steals all the materia because they have to prove themselves worthy and Godo puts her up to the task of testing them. Shit goes sideways with the Corneo fiasco. They overcome that, kill the fat c**t, free Yuffie, get welcomed into Wutai as allies.
Watch this all happen exactly like this.

That's the thing though, maybe he had no fricking idea and never even realised she got pregnant and left before even she had any idea. It's not like you have the sex and boom the female inflates like a balloon so, if he stuck around for a bit, they fooled a bit and then he left a week later, it could work. It IS a bit of a stretch and is unlikely, by all means but there IS a possibility. It could be an interesting angle to explore, with Glenn feeling awful for abandoning them and having no idea of it. Both Cloud and Glenn are exceptionally gifted fighters of strong constitution, but neither are what you'd call the sharpest tool in the shed. They are pretty different personality wise, but there's several ways that could be too and it's not like children are exact carbon copies of one of the parents either...

Technically speaking, it's only one Aerith. I am basing my assumption on one awakening when the other dies, as her soul will find her new vessel at that point.
As for the materia, it's either ancient magicks (to be read: plot superpowers) allowing the materia to travel on through Cloud's soul/mind or it's simply a symbolic connection between Aerith and Cloud, kind of like Sephiroth uses Cloud's memories to come back, maybe Aerith is using a similar stratagem to maintain some connection to the living world?
I agree in a way, we are seeing a game of chess where Sephiroth and Aerith keep binding themselves to Cloud and returning eternally.
In a way, it'd basically be a loop of Sephiroth returns endlessly as long as Cloud lives and Aerith is ever by Cloud's side ready to help him however she can and keeping Sephiroth at bay as much as possible. I personally would be down with this if the "endgame" of the trilogy creates a situation like this, it'd pay homage to how the compilation evolved without going completely off the rails compared to the OG. It'd mostly enrich the OG if anything, with details that were never really explored
The biggest puzzle in this whole story is always sephiroth because besides wanting to ruin Cloud's life we have no idea of his plans, intent or feelings. So it is hard to know what would counter him if we dont know what he wants to do.
Marlene being present in both realities means there doesn't need to be only one active consiousness per character.
I think it is a bit funny because if it truly is 2 different existences in a way. That Aerith 2 never met Cloud so it would be a good dodge to finish her story with Zack. It wouldnt be our Aerith.
One thing I do hope is that Rebirth at least begins to clear up a little on what the second world means, and not leave that entirely up to part 3.

Marlene might just be based on the memories the cast had of her as she's one of the people they've all interacted with. Coincidentally, most of the npcs shown as alive in Zack's reality and that he interacted with in the trailers are people who have interacted and/or have ties with the main cast, which supports the theory that these people are duplicates from the singularity being given "life" through memories read from the lifestream. It also excuses Biggs being "alive" in Zack's universe.

Yeah that's probably got to do with the whispers being nabbed by Sephiroth to create this split, it probably "forced" time to move to the point of the singularity and then branch off like this so Zack would walk up to Midgar but unknowingly to him it'd be Midgar from a couple months into the future. There definitely is some time shifting happening and I think once we get a good look at the sky above Midgar in his reality we might have a hint or two more as to what the hell is happening there.

Yeah that is my take, and it also makes the subsequent appearances of Zack in AC and the like make more sense, he's with her, always helping her out on the other side whenever the need arises, he probably will play a part in stirring holy from that reality eventually, until everything is reverted back to normal and they both manage to float back into the Planet's lifestream proper and catalyze it all

In the end of Rebirth Aerith dies. They bury her and the very final scene of the game is camera panning on her as she's underwater. They zoom in to Aerith's face and she suddenly opens her eyes and wakes up in Zack's timeline. Before that, at some point of game the story takes us to the Zack timeline where he finds Aerith unconscious
