the ff4 remake kept old players engaged by expanding the gameplay including literally remaking a bunch of boss fights so that using the old meta strategy makes them harder and kept the story the same but took advantage of modern hardware to give it really cool voice acting/cinematic directing on all the most important scenes and adding a bunch of extra optional dialogue to flesh out the characters/world without getting in the way of the boomers that just want to play their 1991 rpg again without a ton of extra shit getting in the way of dungeon crawling
FF4 remake also wasn't a high budget 3 part redo with years inbetween each release
Judging by all the debate the end of part 1 sparked and part 2 will as well, they've been successful in creating the engagement they wanted

The only point was to get people talking between games because they weren't confident they could hold people's interest over 10 years and 3 releases if this was just OG again. The plot ghosts have no other purpose.
Leaks are vague but some have mentioned that white are Holy and black are Meteor or something about some stories that were written called Lifestream White and Lifestream Black where Sephiroth and Aerith are both dead in the lifestream. It insinuates that the black ones are souls corrupted by Sephiroth and the white ones are souls that Aerith is gathering to oppose him before he can enact his master plan

I agree. It was the one thing that would vastly change the trajectory of the story. Cloud and the corrupted materia will probably play out somewhat like his mindbreak in the original and be solved around the same point. They should've just stuck to the original story if they were going to wimp out and backpedal. It feels like they couldn't commit to what they wanted to do re: a faithful remake or changing things. That moment would've worked better for me if President Shinra actually got to be more of a character. It wasn't that big of a deal in the original where he's a fake out villain, but he's around as the main antagonist for so much of Remake and he's still an underdeveloped nothing.
