Go to the official servers, you can start whenever you want in any way you want. These days you can get npc party members to level with. There is still group content, but it's all at the end of the game. You can progress through the rest of it at whatever pace you like.

As fun as the golden days of group leveling were, not having to shout in Jeuno for an hour and a half just to take a 20 minute airship ride to a party that disbands 5 minutes later is a welcome change.

        >group content
how many of those "groups" are just one guy autistically controlling his own party of bots? Don't lie to the guy.

Good news, single person multi-box parties only effect that one person. You can still find groups to do most things in the game that need them.

No, either a physical or digital journal of quests you receive, the person/location you got it from, and what they want. The quest log only tells you the name of the quest and a short description, but no specifics from the quest dialogue. You could look them up on the wiki, but where's the fun in that?

            >You could look them up on the wiki, but where's the fun in that?
I could totally find the fun in searching a tiny spot in a large area but you literally get no indication. The spot can be in the otherside of the world and in top of that it doesn't even glow. You literally have to get near and cycle between the targets to get the invisible spot. It's just sadistic at that point.

Online games used to be about wonder, that's why they encouraged players from all over the world to come together despite language differences and had mechanics focusing on communication and just being part of the world.

People today have lost the wonder of online play, being able to talk to someone across the globe is taken from granted and people just care about latency and checking off boxes. MMOs have taken too much design input from mobile games to maximize your addiction with things like daily quests and limited time items, which ironically makes modern MMOs feel much more like a "job" than older ones despite the reduced time investment.

They mega buffed BST both directly and indirectly and it needed to be fixed, they took too long to nerf it though. They touted their job changes as Era+, a way to rebalance the game and keep it fresh, but in the end all it turned out to be was them nerfing jobs they were jealous of and buffing the jobs they liked and wanted to feel special playing. It was all very heavy handed and seemingly done by someone who didn't understand 75 cap content and how each job affected those around it.

        Anonymous

Back then it was pretty bad, but now the end-game is more accessible but the grind is still MASSIVE as well as the gil you need.

Honestly, it's laughable how SE approached leveling up all the gear and everything. It's just dumping hundreds of millions of gil into materials for each upgrade since farming them yourself would take literally months of working every day. Especially for the Empyrean items still, you still need thousands of heavy metal plates.

I remember one time there was some event where drops for items were increased for this NM spawning activity to get HMP, Voidwatch. I spent DAYS doing nothing but grinding voidwatch battles in The Shrine of Ru-Avitau, literally all day I sat there, spawned the monster with other people, we beat it and collected the drops. I maybe made like 100 or so heavy metal plates doing it all day for like 2-3 days. You need 1500 of them just to upgrade one single empyrean weapon. and that's just one step of like 20 steps you have to do for those fricking weapons.

That's the issue, all the late game content is locked behind a bunch of bullshit low level busywork grind. I can't remember which weapons it was but another one required you to grind these NMs in specific areas, and you had to kill each NM multiple times with the weapon, and some took HOURS to respawn, meaning you had to basically sit in a zone for a day or 2 just killing the same NM over and over again. To make matters worse some were lottery spawns, meaning you had to keep killing the other regular monsters to get the NM to spawn. Fricking nightmare of a grind that was so mind-blowingly boring to do.

That's why I'll never get back into FFXI. Shit like this just stops me. I had a well geared WHM, THF, SAM, SCH and WAR with all jobs mastered, but I never had the time to grind the ultimate weapons for them, especially WHM which you really need Yagrush for the hardest content in the game, or at least did at the time.

Unfortunately the actual XI players from back in the day are probably not taking part in private servers, what you end up with are private server born and bred players who are super autists and highly possessive and competitive about the game. People who only know the game through private servers think the game is all about progressing fast and being elitist, they never learned the game is actually about enjoying the journey over the reward.

At least you got to enjoy it for a while, I wouldn't personally worry about endgame anyway at this point.

          Anonymous

          >Competitive
But XI doesn't even have PvP. I don't understand why someone would look at this game of all things and think "Yes, this is the game I want to use as my competitive outlet".

            Anonymous

FFXI did have PVP, multiple forms of it if I remember. Ballista was the most popular one, it was a team vs. team battlefield where you fought other players with a level cap. I used to play it all the time.

            Anonymous

That's just how they are anon, they look back at people who actually played the game and say to themselves "I can prove to everyone I'm better than that" and take the game way too seriously. They treat leveling like a speedrun and endgame content like it's life or death, it's just how private servers are with their small communities and drama.

Also XI does have multiple PVP modes.

We... can never, ever go back. All the memories lost, all the friendships we had, gone. It's literally over.

For the record, I've tried playing FFXI multiple times over the years and it's just not the same. It's not that it's bad or anything, it's just the game is still a massive grind in the end-game content, but the thing is everything that made FFXI special when I played it when I was younger is now gone. My friendslist is empty, every single person I knew has moved on, even looking up their characters on FFXIAH they stopped playing over a decade ago.

Now the game's community is basically just the 5% or so of autists that continued to play after all these years, players that have multiple characters all decked out in the best gear yo can imagine, and mostly just sit around AFK doing not much at all.

The thing is I don't have the time in my life to play a game like this anymore anyways. It completely sucks the life out of you like a drug, and it's designed to eat up as much time as humanly possible to do even simple things. They made QoL improvements in a few places, teleports that are much easier to get around the world with being the first thing but still. Once you get leveled up, skilled up and begin the end game gear grinds it all takes so fricking long. There's wait times, limits on what you can do in a day, etc.

Last time I tried playing again was about a year ago, after not playing for about 3 years or so, and even the NEW friends I made during the last time I played were all gone again by then too, and the linkshell I was in had broken.

Still, just logging in and wandering around Bastok and the other zones brings back so many memories and so much nostalgia. Even if the world feels kind of dead, it still brings back such good times.

Yes. The only difference is that the expansions aren't one linear story. It's more like a bunch of different branches that come together in the end. All the content is still there and it's all soloable on retail.

XIV is one long storyline whereas XI is many individual storylines that can be done in (almost) any order. On retail it would take you probably 2 months of playing to soundly get through all of them if you worked hard at it, retail also has many systems in place to make soloing a breeze, you never have to interact with another person if you don't want to.

Asura has autists but its also the most alive. A lot of good people play there just you need to find them. And you will know who the autists are in one meeting. A good Dynamis-D turnout here is 12+ people.
      >Bahamut
Asura light but honestly way dead. A good Dynamis-D turn out here is 8 people.
      >Odin
      JP ONRY literally

FFXI did have PVP, multiple forms of it if I remember. Ballista was the most popular one, it was a team vs. team battlefield where you fought other players with a level cap. I used to play it all the time.

It's actually still around in Asura. You don't hear advertising for it because some homosexual was malding because people left his shell when he himself was barely around to begin with. Not naming names.

That was one of the best things about the game, actually not a one off experience but rather the norm for how people acted. People were always open to helping random strangers.

Honestly it doesn't help that most MMOs are hostile that sort of thing inherently nowadays. Try to heal someone in combat? They now get 0 XP because you're tagged in combat with them. Try to buff them? Either the buffs won't do much or won't last long enough for them to do anything with it. Want to just give them old gear? Nope, everything's bound to your account.

In trying to fight power gamers they kind of just sucked the soul out of everything.

Yeah I only played XI for a short while when they had a 2 week free trial I think it was, met so many friendly players. I remember dying in the middle of nowhere, was just sitting there despairing when a Paladin comes by and rez'd me. Stuff like that made a strong impression on a new player in MMOs back in the day and was great motivation to work towards becoming a stronk max level epic geared player too.

my man, just level up WHM and find a group to do VD / ID with. That's what I used to do. This applies to almost all endgame content too, as WHM is one of the few jobs where you don't need to be ultra-well geared to do high level content. Doesn't take too long to gear up WHM. That said, it is a job where you have to actually have some degree of skill / attention to what's happening in order to do it properly as if your attention fades for a second bad shit happens.

NTA, but I've been thinking of picking up WHM for that reason. My LS is dead, so if I want to play I'll need to find some groups to play with. Though, I'm much further along and have several mastered and decently geared jobs. Still, WHM might be fun for a change of pace. It seems like keep track of status effects/debuffs on everyone would be a pain though.

It's not too bad. and honestly last time I looked at a WHM guide a few months ago the gear hasn't changed all that much in the last few years.

It's actually a pretty fun job though, and it gives you access to content that you otherwise wouldn't have access too without the best gear in the game. and there's always a need for WHMs, there's no other job that effectively replaces what you do not even SCH.

          Anonymous

well there's not really any specific list, but the general idea can be gained here
          https://www.ffxiah.com/database
take this with a heavy grain of salt, because people have more than 1 character and the servers listed with 0 are also not accurate. I know for a fact some of those servers listed as 0 have 100-200 on them.

Honestly I'd take it, they've been ignoring and pillaging the game for material to copy paste into 14 for so long they are almost obligated to do something in return for 11. I can't see them shutting down the servers though unless something fricking enormous happens, surely the game still makes them a fair bit of cash and they put almost nothing back into it.

It is what it is, I just don't like the literal copy paste of enemies, models, and other things into the game, actual PS2 models made 20 years ago.

The environments in XI were always so fun to explore because they tried to make them feel natural, enemy placement, monster families, regions, they didn't just slap shit down they thought about where they put it. To see the monsters just tossed around randomly, shit aint right.

nothing that has everything. your only option for that is retail or youtube.

      Anonymous

In retail you can play alone for the story. It takes forever tho.

      Anonymous

That's retail, with the only hard part being getting through late SoA, RoV, and TVR. And that's mainly because of the grind required for the "leveling after leveling" stat boosts. Hell, TVR REQUIRES you to get a Primal Weapon to continue.

      Anonymous

Retail is the easiest way to play through the story as the entire game has been re-designed to be solo friendly. Private servers generally try to peel back these solo concepts and make the game more like what it was in the old days and that makes the game harder to progress though.

      Anonymous

why would you want to do a private server for just the story when you can do that on the retail version? a private server would mean you need groups to do all the content, good luck getting a group together to do all those fricking story missions that would require it, and good luck with the tough battles on those level capped servers.

retail allows you to get to do the story as you level up with your job, and allows you to use trusts as your party members to heal / do skillchains and whatnot with the story bosses. That's how you should experience it if you want to do that.

FFXI won't be shut down as long as it's making money. As far as I can tell it probably has at least several hundred THOUSAND players still active paying a subscription each month. That's like minimum a couple million dollars in money coming into SE every month from FFXI, and if you include all the add ons, mog wardrobes and other stuff you have to pay for you're looking at the average player probably paying close to or over $20 per month to sub to FFXI. So let's say there's like 200k active subs still, idk how accurate that is, but it's still 4 million dollars to pay for the server upkeep / a small staff / mods, etc and make some profit over it. Seems pretty feasible to me. I'm willing to bet FFXI is still making a few million in profit each month.

      Anonymous

the current estimated minimum $/mo is on the FFXIAH site and it's assuming there's 0 people paying for wardrobes or multiple accounts and it's something like 128k minimum monthly

I like XIV, it's just not the same though. Mostly because I am an adult with a job and when I'm at home, I have to make much harder choices about how I'm going to spend my leisure time because I have so much less of it.

Why can't someone just make a simple fun PSO game anymore? Sure I can go back and play that one, but I've done everything.

These kind of games won't work nowadays. People have too low attention span and life eats all time.
