FFXII

Holy Moly why did no one tell me this SUCKS. Massive downgrade from X/X-II. I couldn't even choke down getting to the actual desert, stopped playing as soon as I got out of the city.

Unironically FF12 becomes an entirely different game with the fast forward feature. Which I know is controversial, but the game never clicked with me until I could fast forward through mob fights and the long walks. The dopamine rush of seeing all the numbers appearing and all the loot dropping got me.

For the sake of playing the /vr/ approved version, I recommend international with a speed function mapped to your controller if you're emulating.

The HD remaster and the QoL features it has make it way more tolerable, frick any "purist" who thinks the PS2 original is worth playing these days. Also something something Matsuno left the games development.

As is FF tradition, since 6 was a downgrade from 5.

Every FF game since XI has been unmitigated garbage. X was also bad. 12 and everything after it are crap. 8 was meh, 7 is the most overrated RPG of all time.

XI, IX, and VI are all great.

I loved it. And this was back in 2007 btw, I consumed that game like a mfer. It was amazing
And yes I loved 10 also.

The only bad thing I'll say about this game is that the license board stuff is pretty badly done.
But also I don't think IZJS does it right either, becauase it locks you in for the rest of the game.
One of the best things about this game is you can give any character any weapon. That means a lot of planning of how you want that character to be built. In vanilla, they overdo it because by the end of the game everyone learns everything.
But in IZJS you're just supposed to know at the beginning of the game.
Neither of the 2 ways is great, they should've struck a middle ground. Like you have to pay orichalcum to go down a path on the board, or pay gil to respec, or something like that.
That said, out of the two I think vanilla is better

5/10 troll attempt, you got me to respond. 10 is probably the most generic and bland FF since 4, and people only like it because it was the first pretty game on the ps2.

What made me love this game was:
    1) figuring out the gambit system
    2) doing every single billboard monster hunt

  22. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I'm loving this game so much, I love the world, the environments/art direction, the character designs, the combat, the gambit system(managing this to autistic levels is so fricking addicting) beautiful music, but I have no fricking clue what's going on in the story, my brain just shuts down the second a cutscenes starts. I think this game might have given me, or unearthed in me, some type adhd, because I wonder off or get distracted by the world or beautiful character models whenever a cutscene is playing. This has never happened before with another video game. I remember side quests more than the main story, probably because it's just text and not cutscenes.
Story is about Ashe getting her throne back, I think? and her ghost bf haunting her? some evil entity possessing people, Vaan wants to be a pirate, his bro died (I honestly keep forgetting he's the protagonist. Idk why they made him the face of the game, he's so forgettable, like a shitty Tidus.) Penelo wants Vaan's Captain Basch from dalmasca. Story is also something about the nethesite? I only remember it because everyone sounds lispy when they says it, specially Balthier, and Fran (I love her accent so much, sounds norwegian but slower), I do pay close attention when it's anything about the Viera tho, not sure why. Would've preferred 12 to be centered around the Viera, instead. It feels like the whole world is backing them and their way of life into a corner more and more, as the rest of the world advances, and they keep losing their own people to the outside world. At least that's what i've gathered from what i've played so far. Their home honestly felt like I was an actually Fantasy setting, very 'alien' culture.
I'm just got to that Balfonheim, beautiful place.

also does anyone know why everyone in this game sounds like they were recorded in a box? I don't mind it, I've actually grown to like it and find it unintentional unique, but it's very odd, never encountered with this type of audio

The story is actually amazing and doesn't get enough credit. I'll try to summarize, but it's been a long time and I may be rusty on some details:

Basically the gods have been dictating humanity since the beginning of time. The main antagonist, Vayne, is recruited by the rogue god Venat, who wants to free humanity from its shackles and uses the resources of Vayne toward those means. In exchange, he's promised Vayne immense power for his own mustache twirling ends, and also gives him the means to manufacture synthetic auracite which gives the holder supernatural powers.

Those gods recruit the main party to serve them and give them the means to fight Vayne (IIRC) but the main party ultimately tells them to frick off.

Venat achieves these means and holds up his end of the bargain, but abandons Vayne at the end now that their transaction has been completed. You defeat Vayne and save the day, and Venat fricks off now that he's achieved his mission of releasing humanity from its shackles.

I may have this wrong in some places, but like I said it's been awhile. It's an amazing story, just unfortunately the presentation of it is a bit lackluster. If they had presented this story in a more direct way, I believe it could've been regarded as one of the best FF stories of all time. It's the usual Matsuno political intrigue, with added political intrigue between gods themselves.

In FFXII you are on the side of the Zodiacs. The Occuria don't really have a active role in history and only act in FFXII because of a renegate who's actions will bring the fall that results in the regressed post-apo world of FFT. So it's a completly opposite story.

we told you, it just has a vocal fanbase that would eat shit if it had matsuno's name on it (I'm a fan of his, but this game blows)
    >plays itself
    >unmemorable characters
    >poorly paced plot
    >most of the interesting shit happens away from you or offscreen
    >huge fields of nothing so bad they needed a fast forward button to make it bearable
    >get new equipment but you can't equip it because it's on the other end of the license board, have to waste LP on things you don't need/have to reach something you want/have
    >mostly bland orchestral soundtrack
    >need to consult an online faq to know which items, in what quantity and order to sell them to the bazaar because there are no in-game recipes
    >no optional mini-games to break up the monotony except some moronic fishing and running mini games
    >mostly brown, especially in the beginning

alright this has been going for a couple days now so I want to clarify.
FFXII just doesn't wrap me into the story as quickly as other FF titles I've played, the cutscenes are magnificent and the story is compelling, however the combat is asinine and I'm just straight up not interested in the bounty board. X-II combat already had me balking, X was reminiscent of 7s combat which I liked, I prefer my TBC to be turn based. also this may be a brainless or midwit problem, but it took me forever to find my way out of the first city and I was too drunk and angry to frick with the rest of this bullshit

I honestly have no idea how that could happen considering FF12 is one of the few FFs to actually have an actual in-depth map system that you can even display in fullscreen while you play the game
