FFXIV story is shit compared to actual games. As an MMO, it compensates for mediocre storytelling with sheer volume so that the player inevitably gets stockholmed into caring for the characters when the 1-2 big moments happen every 100 hours. Most big fans of 14 have mmobrainrot or are women who never played other games and mostly like the RP and social aspects. After not playing since I beat it and rewatching some of the story. It's pretty tough to call it good story telling. The filler is horrendous and 90% of dramatic scenes are extremely soapy/corny which would normally make you cringe but your brain has been rewired to like it because it's an MMO and your life now. Fujowalker absolutely maxed out the corny.
That said, coming from Shadowlands in WoW it was one of the most refreshing experiences I've had both story wise and gameplay/MMORPG wise. I'm fond of it for curing me of mmo addiction.
If you're playing MMO, it's a pretty good story. I just wish they did more kill quests to pad the game rather than padding the everliving frick out of important dialogue with 5 minutes of absolute drivel.

There are MMOs with a better story (SWTOR) but they're few for sure. There's maybe 6 hours of good storytelling in FFXIV, the good parts most players talk about were much shorter than they remember (travelling with Estinien and Ysalyle in HW is really brief and filled to the brim with side quests that split you up).

ARR/HW are the highlight of the story and world building in FFXIV, though, everything starts falling apart and becomes just another trope filled Japanese story by SB and it never regains the interesting setups it had in ARR/HW. Just look at how badly the nations got mangled, in ARR they all have unique and interesting setups from government to spiritual beliefs and they are all intensely nationalistic, and you get the feeling they are allied more out of fear of Garlemald rather than any true kinship and real friction is boiling just beneath the surface. All of that is lost by SHB at the latest, and that's just one aspect of how the world building and characterization fell off a cliff. This game is praised way too much for its story given that it gets progressively worse in virtually every aspect the longer you play it.
EW is the absolute worst shit we've had so far.
At least the beginning has the benefit of the doubt cause it's just getting started, but EW has no fricking excuse for being so pathetically cliched and overdone.
EW's problems aren't really cliched and overdone, its that they are jammed together in a splattering of themes. You could make an entire expansion just off Garlemalds collapse and themes of a humilated militarist (obviously referencing Japan's post war experience), and another expansion just the anti-buddhist themes of Ultima Thule / Elpis. But they try to do both and you end up with goofy shit like zodiark being a lvl 83 trial.
personally, i'd have prefered a full garlemald expansion centering on their internal collapse, and like 7 zones dealing with places in garlemald with the whole urban / steampunk / icy early 20th century aesthetic, with the final boss being Zodiark. Also thavnair was inexcusably ugly.
I disagree in that I think cutting garlemald short is the right choice. Sure, you *can* fill an entire expansion with it's collapse and shit, but it's the kind of stuff that's going to wear thin very fricking fast. Parts of Bozja make a good example of why because the more they expand and go over that kind of thing the more Lugaes or other morally bankrupt military and scientist types you end up with which starts ruining your ability to care about the characters who aren't straight up evil but are instead prideful and stubborn and don't want to admit to being wrong or whatever.
Furthermore, I like Zodiark where he is honestly. Funny danny piloting a shell that's just barely under half sundered makes for a good stepping stone to something bigger rather than trying to slot it in where you'd put the big .0/.3 story bosses that mean a lot more. Especially when him pulling this bullshit isn't relevant until we get more into hermes and other shit.
Now, I will say that done correctly you could give a *little* more time to what Garlemald is dealing with even if I don't want an entire expansion filled with it. But it would have to just be the post collapse and recovery stuff which is the actually interesting portion.

Garlemald's fall would just be a retread of the latter half of 3.0 and stretching that out to just explore themes that have already been hit on would wear thin instantly.

I literally can not fricking say what actually happened in ARR. It's an entire game's worth of completely boring filler up until the the last 10 minutes where you fight Raiden from MK in his Fursona Metal Gear.
I'm in the next expansion and now everyone's voice is different and I'm expected to just not notice that or the fact I'm STILL doing the exact same boring quests with boring dialogue.

Yeah, the trial will get you through a large portion of the game. Even more soon since they're adding another expac to it.
Play it through the normal launcher instead of through steam.
The gameplay/questing is pretty generic/standard MMO, the story is the main draw there and it varies in quality but is mostly passable at least.
FF14 isn't generic MMO at all. No MMO has this much text, cutscene, or fetching and so little combat grinding. It's not even close

The trial is basically the entire base game so it's a lot of content. It's not like WoW where the trial is just leveling to like level 10 and then there's frick all to do.
You're limited in a few annoying ways but if you're unfamiliar with the full version you won't know what you're missing.

Just do the story/feature quests, that are flaming or blue quest markers.

I would say it's a mix of people not remembering the bad parts and the game not living up to the immense overhyping. At least the last one happens to me all the time, a game gets overhyped, I play the game and while it's good I'm disappointed it wasn't the 10/10 I was promised and enjoy it slightly less.
Probably the reason why i ended up Stormblood the most, people hyped the shit out of HW and for a second i was ready to buy into it 'cause despite most of ARR being shit that final cutscene got me really into it, but then HW did dirty to the whole Ul'Dah incident and that shit burned me hard, meanwhile everyone and their mother shit talked SB to death but i was kinda impressed by the rise in quality, more dynamic dungeons and cutscenes and shit, we actually got to see one of its locations being attacked and burned compared to the laughable fire that was happening in Ishgard, Zenos sucked major ass but i enjoyed the ride and the whole Yotsuyu shit in the patch is still the best part of the game

As someone who actually reads fantasy novels both western and eastern for enjoyment the story in FF14 is on the same tier as a japanese light novel.
In fact the light novels for Mushoku Tensei eclipse the entirety of this game.

Arcanist/Summoner blows and doesn't play at all like a summoner should. 99% of each battle you're there playing a gimped black mage with a blue dog that does nothing for you. The last 1% you cast a summon that exists to grant 2-4 uses of another spell for your black mage larp.
Depends where you're at in the game honestly. ARR is everything you called it to be. Later on Shadowbringers is basically the game at it's peak so far.
I'll not make excuses for the weak beginning, every one has called it out to death by now. But the game massively rewards your investment into the worldbuilding and complexity of things as the narrative unravels more and more as you progress through.

Gaius is by far the best part of ARR. I fond the stories in Heavensward, Shadowbringers and Endwalker perfectly serviceable. Frick Stormblood though. But I can't blame anyone for not wanting to slog through the utter shite that is ARR. It makes me sick thinking about having to replay any of it.
Storywriting has no place in the present of a videogame, only to set the stage. The best videogame stories are the unique adventures that a player experiences in more open videogames. A videogame is an interactive medium and the story evolves around the player, you should always strive to let the player tell their own story. The players best memories will never be of a written set piece, but of something special that happened to them. Dwarf Fortress has the best story in any videogame.

Ruby Sea and Yanxia were so bad, but I liked the Gyr Abania portion a lot. The first third of HW was way worse imo. Fordola and the Skulls were a neat idea that sadly went nowhere besides her minor redemption and then turned into a primal-killing slave in short stories published on the website.

Peaks is great, I loved the painted mountains and waterfall with the upper terrain being exploited for the garlean watch tower. Lochs has those neat side caves and catacombs, but imo I think Ala Mhigo should've been bigger. The Reach is also a cozy spot and I miss it dearly. Only one I don't really like is the Fringe, there's not much going on besides the big hole in the mountain from Omega and Shinryu's fight or the huge canyon you can't explore.

XIV has a bad starting experience because it's secretly a FOMO game that keeps the useless parts. It wasn't bad in 2013, it's bad in 2023 because everything is comically weak, the world is empty, and you only have 3 buttons when you used to have 25 by that point in the game.

Yup. The craziest part is that the recent expansions are the worst when it comes to that. Heavensward, for the most part, was all story. Stormblood had a few bad bits but was otherwise pretty good throughout.

I didn't play EW but I've heard it's even worse. I've come to accept that XIV just has really weird players who praise everything blindly. I'll get around to playing EW at some point, maybe when the next expansion launches and they actually change shit because XIV's worst thing by far is the gameplay. It has the single worst MMO combat I've ever seen, it puts me to sleep like nothing else.

They should A) just make fates good again and B) introduce new areas in patches rather than occasionally making better fates and "new" zones that are only useful for the patch content then forgotten forever
there's like 3 chain fates in EW and only one of them isn't for a world boss, why not just add rare fates and NMs into the overworld and make some new zones in places that need them, like Ala Mhigo or Garlemand
Eureka is VERY GOOD now with the echo and the amount of boosts you get, it was terrible on release because of how it forced you to stay there for a lot of time for very low rewards

I felt the same when I played it. I don't know if I jus didn't get far enough for it start getting good or it was actually just mediocre at best. Some moments or ideas seemed like they could have worked in a JRPG, but the structure of the game didn't let it.

This was my feeling as well OP. I dropped it after 1.5 month when I was slowly crawling through Vanilla quests. I picked the game 6 months later, finished ARR somehow and, man did it pick up in Heavensward. The game just did a 180 with an engaging narrative and an engulfing journey there. It's not spectactular but definitely well done.

MCH plays closer to a Phys Melee but at a distance, while Bard (like Dancer) is Proc based while keeping up DoTs and buffs. Personally I find MCH more enjoyable, even in ARR content, but I don't dislike Bard

MCH is easier and is just following a script where you mash most of your buttons on cooldown. BRD has a simpler "rotation" but has way more things to keep track of (procs, dots, ogcd damage, song timing)

so then make encounters with add management and gimmicks, moving across different arenas, narrow hallways, verticality, platforming, enemies come in waves and have unique properties where crowd control and all the cool stuff matters
as it stands SE keeps upping the mechanical complexity of fights but the core combat is just slapping a giant target dummy

It's not that easy, PvP's CC is designed to work in relation to other players which is why it's all short duration freezes or stuns, DoTs, and disables. Stuff that'd be useless against add waves unless your 8-man raid magically is coordinated enough to tag one add after the other with freezes, and which wouldn't fly against a raid boss at all for obvious reasons. Bosses generally do use all those things mentioned (save add waves) when it's actually going to be pertinent to their fight, and they don't have it when it won't be

As you've probably gathered, you basically can't. I started with a couple of friends and the best we could do was staying around the same zones(ish), but there was no point partying up outside of dungeons because the MSQ demanded everyone was solo

Ok now that's a change I can get behind. Although now a mod I use the classic FF UI pixel design for immersion, the clean stale UI although is far less noisy, just doesn't have the same feel of an FF game for me.

Thing is the job icons does the same as what this plugin does, where it'll block most status icons. With the text one, all online status icons are visible.
