yeah. each card used to have a unique effect, but this just resulted in one of the cards being the most optimal option 99% all of the time, to the point that AST gameplay would revolve around fishing for the optimal card. So CBUIII decided to listen to numbergays and make it boring for everyone
offense wise that's about it. it's still the most involved out of all the healers which is pretty sad given that the only other fun healer is SCH.
healing wise it's still fun. timed heals are really fun to work with
Back in HW and SB, AST cards had actual flavor.
The Balance would give a 10% damage boost (the one everyone wanted).
The Bole would reduce damage taken by 10% (useless beside niche situation)
The Arrow would increase your gcd and auto attack speed by 10% (it would disturb the precious 2min meta now so no one would want it beside BLM)
The Spear back in HW would reduce the CD of your oGCD by 10% and in SB was changed to a 10% crit buff (second most wanted buff after SB change)
The Ewer would give MP back
The Spire would give TP back
All had a 30sec duration.
And then AST had another skill called Royal Road that would sacrifice a card to buff the next card depending of the type of card sacrificed.
Bole and Balance would boost the potency of the next card by 150%
Arrow and Spear would double the duration of the card.
Ewer and Spire would reduce the potency of the card by 50% but would spread it to everyone in the party.
So basically the meta was just to fish for a spread Balance and nothing else, at least till LB when they made Spear had dps value as well.
People remember it fondly but if you wanted to be a parse troony AST was just plain fricking hell and a gigantic RNG mess, heck people would do shit like make the AST giving a potency or extended balance to a single dude just so they could be at the top of FFlogs.
ROG/NINs Shade Shift dodged the next physical attack 100%, even had a cute little animation of your character disappearing in a tuft of smoke with a little wooden log falling onto the floor. You could legit dodge raid attacks with it. I miss that kinda stuff.

I'd love a spear and shield tank but sadly the odds of us getting another tank with a shield (or even another job with an off-hand slot at all) is pretty much zero at this point.
Aside from marketing, there's no reason to add any new jobs. There simply isn't the mechanical complexity to make them act any differently. This goes doubly true for tanks and healers, where jobs already directly copy core abilities from other jobs or even exist as mostly 1:1 copies with a few distinctions. Mechanically, the game is in a fricking miserable place and I'm worried that they don't even think it's a problem.

Yeah the closest thing to that is the staff that goes with the Seventh Hell AF in Stormblood, but it's pretty grandiose and has a lantern hanging from it iirc. Bright side is the Seventh Hell coat is a clone of Vivi's, sleeves and all.

I've been using Scion Adventurer set since the end of SB, and pretty much ignoring every single fancy outfit that has been coming out.
I do however collect glams for non-combat jobs though, since those jobs actually represent WoL activities during his free times
There is a mod that changes what other people look like to make them appear more FF, removes the new fashion glams. I am really considering getting it if only for that and I don't have to look at people in dungeons running them in bikini outfits.

double shield healers a meme. there was one fight i could see it doing better because of how much mit it demanded while also demanding very little healing (DSR). otherwise you gotta plan with your cohealer way too much because if you pop your big fricking heals too close to each other you get to have fun doing ET succor and prognosis. and if you're planning your healing that much, you're probably in a static in which case having a pure healer is much safer and preferred in speeds.

I have played FFXI for a long period while it was active and BST stuck with me. It was a class that 'the community' always declared too weak or mechanically broken, but it had a diehard following that would do its thing. It would be perfectly fine to slot into endgame content, but only few players did it. The devs never listened to 'the community' and kept their design with BST the way it was. I never played BST but I always enjoyed that there was this subset of players that enjoyed the class and did their thing, help you out in the overworld whenever you encountered one. I recently got back into XI and read up on BST, they have a whole knowledge requirement that no other class ever has heard of: Predation, knowing what kind of animal is a natural predator to others. This is just fricking cool and I wish the XIV devs would move away from "it needs to be easy as frick to play and roughly identical to any other class in its role".

BSTs were dominant in the open world and broke the mold by allowing a soloing playstyle in a game where everybody was encouraged to party up.
Neither of those aspects would fit FF14 because the open world is dead with literally zero danger and everybody has to solo anyways because the MSQ is not multiplayer friendly.

WHM will get a 2nd charge of assize, and SGE will get a trait that gives them addersting after a set amount of time/after using addersgall abilities. you WILL enjoy 1 dot, 1 nuke, 1 ogcd gameplay and healers being pure/shield healers, with one of each having a raid buff and the other being selfish.
it's consequences that are the problem with XIV's storytelling, or the lack thereof after the opening parts of Stormblood, but frankly we just saved the universe and then we're saving the Shards immediately right after, a more personal and down-to-earth character driven plot is right up my alley at this point.

I am curious and pensive about the Dragoon and Astrologian changes since they were put off for next expansion to maybe become full reworks, but I do think both jobs could use it since Astrologian took a step backwards from Shadowbringers and Dragoon has needed a spruce-up for a while, especially with it veering off into more generic "dragon abilities" instead of aping Estinien-Nidhogg
MNK has more group utility than NIN with Mantra. Any "group damage up" ability is generic and on a 2 minute cooldown at this point, meaning MNK with Mantra defeats NIN by default.

Honestly the dungeons are boring, there's rarely any unique wrinkles or ideas in them anymore that aren't story setpieces. The classic dungeons being reworked stripped a lot of those wrinkles and their limited creativity out. Stormblood in general (and, frankly, both sets of Raids for Shadowbringers) had really fun bosses and nothing's really been the same since then.

The problems with Stormblood are pretty much entirely story and cast-related. Lyse is a directionless shitstain that dropped all the previous ideas for something much more boring. You can tell Ishikawa did her usual world-building and attempts at intrigue with Othard, albeit you actually have to dive into the various side and job quests to really get the meat and potatoes of it, and it's a step above as a result, but reeks of padding out the expansion story a bit longer the way it's set up.
The dungeons? The bosses, raids? All fun stuff, you can tell the devs were hitting their stride but really willing to let loose with challenge and fun patterns, experimenting with silly ideas and gimmicks in the dungeons and shit like the one that turns you into the gasbags to float across chasms for dumb little moments. Where the story faltered, the gameplay fricking shined.
I won't because stormblood was shit and most everyone's reasons for it not being shit wasn't there on release.
Gameplay was more or less the same as it always was. It's a tab target or whatever you wanna call it MMO I ain't gotta explain shit.

See if you can do it in whatever Ironworks/tomestone stuff you get for being at 50, if so just run level 50 content with it. Though honestly any level 50 group content in that vein will probably work, but I'd assume dungeons are faster.
It broadened the gap between casual and hardcore content even further. It confuses me because I remember a slide where they state they want to narrow it but all of their design choices since then have done the opposite.
Everyone starts at the same basis: an incredibly easy job to play where you cant frick up. So the difficulty is all in watching a MrElated video and learning the DDR. I think that is their thought process.
But since the encounters become more and more convoluted and they need to have difficulty (ie body checks), a bad player is even more fricked and even if the bad player is your friend you will have a hard time carrying them.
If you're talking as a relative beginner, I'd recommend WAR, DRG and DNC, but if you mean you just keep swapping and haven't found your flow yet, it took me a while too. MNK all the way to the end of ARR, and then I ended up GNB and PLD to EW before finally picking up other shit.

if you're new then I'd say warrior because when you get raw intuition learning content is kind of a joke (you can easily eat vuln stacks left and right figuring out what mechanics are)
Both war and dark are the same shit. DRG is pretty stale but busy. RPR is brain-dead but can be fun, only at max level tho. MCH and DNC are piss easy, like hell.
There's not a single hard job left. Literally just pick up based on aesthetics.
There's the EW version though it doesn't give as much as ShB coffee biscuits.
The secret to make money in this game isn't to play the market or anything like that, it's to get as many FC house as possible to level up submarines.

Steps was easy, the problem with release steps was that they did a horrid job in explaining what the group has to do. They should have had a single player duty before explaining how to use the dragon killers and what the chains are for. But instead of doing that they dumbed it down.
I do agree with the devs tho that the MSQ should be maximum accessible, since this is the broadest appeal the game has.
Even when it was current you could ignore everything and burn him down with plenty of time to spare. It just showed SE that this playerbase is 99% mouthbreathers that couldn't even execute ARR's simple job "rotations" if you could even call them that when most were just priority base
This was my favorite trial in the game and I was really miffed it was removed. I'd always be the guy that gets to the tower and shoots the dragonkiller to nail him. It made you feel like you did something and the npc flavor text was great too. >By the Fury the beast felt that one!
They could have kept it as a legacy fight you could unlock after beating the story or something, there was no reason to actually remove content. And as someone that has beaten the MSQ well past the point of these changes I cannot experience it again either without resorting to the lame NG+

I might have been carried, I don't know I did it and just paid attention. The people who I've seen fail or groups I should say were those who were focused on dpsing and sticking in the same spot and not paying attention to what was going on.
Back when it came out, before the nerfs, you had to hit all the dragonkillers and use the turrets effectively to keep the dragons in check or you wouldn't have enough damage to kill it before enrage.
Now you can just kill it without touching any of the siege weapons before it even gets to the first barrier. The difference is massive to say the least.

Rotations are a meme. Spamming frost bolt in wow vanilla was more engaging because my thought pattern was about how much damage I could do without pulling agro and screwing over the group, sheeping mobs to help the group. FFXIV is just do better in your rotation to help yourself. It's a single player game.
As someone that only started last year, why is there such an unbalance between the amount of DPS classes versus everything else? It's nice that they split it into physical, physical-ranged, and magic-ranged, but the news that the new expac was going to add two more DPS classes seems excessive, no? I would've appreciate another tank class at least. You'd think the queue times for DPS players would push them away from adding more for the moment.
DPS is by far the most popular class to play. There's a lot of anxiety that goes into playing tank or healer and people don't want any responsibility placed on them. Also most people just want to do big numbers.
Nobody wants to play tanks and healers because it's playing a more boring version of dps.
That makes sense, I guess. Just weird to me considering there's already a tank and healer class for people with anxiety in Warrior and White Mage. Kinda makes me wonder what the next tank class could be.

Everyone competing and every time WoL crosses path with one of them or goes check on how they're doing we're dragged into helping them with an eventual problem before going to check on the next one. There will be some joke about how even in a competition, WoL just cannot stop helping.
the fanfest live letter implies there's a sort of split of opinion or internal conflict, and the way people are figuring is that there's going to probably be some sort of race or competition for the city of gold, or a difference in opinion on influencing the local leader decision

Who knows? This is also why I think it's gonna be a friendly affair, at least at the start. I have a hard time imagining most of them would enter into conflict with the others, and much less after ShB that was already the one time where an internal conflict actually threatened the group's stability.
If it's really a conflict around the political situation in the New World and which candidate to back, I expect it will be some sort of gentleman's agreement to not hold a grudge over whoever wins and just get over it afterwards.

Estinien doesn't really have much going for him right now, a rivalry with you is all he has when there's no dragons around. Well, that and caring about Alphinaud like he is his little brother. They're definitely in a team together and I don't think they'll be allied with you.
The mcguffin fight is pretty much all I can think of right now for those two, it's probably something along the lines of "2% chance to get a stable portal to other shards" vs "100% chance to do something nice for the moon rabbits" and Y'shtola likes gambling while Urianger does not.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's a dungeon where both your teams are running side by side trying to race to the finish ala that one trial in Golden Sun. And for that to be a reality you need to have a full party on both sides so there has to be a tank/healer/dps in each team which limits who can join who.

Radz-At-Han boomer adventure and the brief time you spent with those two in Shadowbringers, with Thancred making old man dad jokes were the best parts.
Kinda just dawned on me that I can stand adventuring with either of them individually but not when they're combined with other Scions, and much less when they're both there at the same time, because that's when they push everyone else off and the game starts to feel like it's playing favorites hard. Like I think back of meeting with Alisaie in Mord Souq and that shit was fine, really cool, but then I think of Alisaie in Garlemald and I just groan.
I don't like Alisaie's English voice actress, I do however really like Graha's English voice actor. No I don't listen in weeb language, I'm English and I'm going to listen to what I understand. I don't get the hate for Graha.

I think it'd be cool if the plot actually kind of ran parallel where there's two camps that the scions are split on. Can have the gay friendship come back together at the end or whatever but it'd be a cool way to branch the story and let you hang with the scions you want to.

All things considered, the story hasn't even advanced a year in-universe and the forward progression has left the cast unable to really hop back to Othard or other locales except when the WoL needs to go there with them in tow for whatever reason. Odds are as soon as the Endsinger business was done they got called off to other their shit they were working on, and haven't been able to think about it.
I started playing last friday and I'm level 25, kinda wish people would interact more with each other. Only time anyone acknowledged my existence was a random DM asking me if I wanted to join their guild and I couldn't even reply because I'm on the free trial
I've spent a fair amount of time doing stuff in cities, mostly Ul'dah. Visited Limsa today and it had more people at least.

Honestly were it not so heavily tied to "git gud as you fight through some of the hardest and most punishing non-raid shit this game has to offer", I'd hope for like, a lightweight story path through this shit. As it is, they write interesting side ideas to the plot and then that shit is stuck in side story hell forever because like, 20% of the playerbase if even that can complete it.

I wiped in a Syrcus Tower three times last time I bothered with an Alliance Raid Roulette, I don't know how that's possible or why they keep catering to braindead people that allows that to happen.
I did World of Darkness with a friend a few hours ago because of course people will still exploit to get that dumb shit as much as possible before it goes away. Our Alliance's Tank kept rushing in for the bosses and then just standing there, letting massive sweeps hit everyone used to smarter tanks luring them away, or forgetting they have stance on when someone else Provoke'd, so Cerberus wiped half of the players there because it was spastically flailing about and hitting almost everyone.
You never really think about how Tanking is keeping everyone alive until the Tank is moronic. Not even a Sprout with early gear, either.

yeah. each card used to have a unique effect, but this just resulted in one of the cards being the most optimal option 99% all of the time, to the point that AST gameplay would revolve around fishing for the optimal card. So CBUIII decided to listen to numbergays and make it boring for everyone
offense wise that's about it. it's still the most involved out of all the healers which is pretty sad given that the only other fun healer is SCH.
healing wise it's still fun. timed heals are really fun to work with

The Balance would give a 10% damage boost (the one everyone wanted).
The Bole would reduce damage taken by 10% (useless beside niche situation)
The Arrow would increase your gcd and auto attack speed by 10% (it would disturb the precious 2min meta now so no one would want it beside BLM)
The Spear back in HW would reduce the CD of your oGCD by 10% and in SB was changed to a 10% crit buff (second most wanted buff after SB change)
The Ewer would give MP back
The Spire would give TP back
All had a 30sec duration.
And then AST had another skill called Royal Road that would sacrifice a card to buff the next card depending of the type of card sacrificed.
Bole and Balance would boost the potency of the next card by 150%
Arrow and Spear would double the duration of the card.
Ewer and Spire would reduce the potency of the card by 50% but would spread it to everyone in the party.
So basically the meta was just to fish for a spread Balance and nothing else, at least till LB when they made Spear had dps value as well.

I'd love a spear and shield tank but sadly the odds of us getting another tank with a shield (or even another job with an off-hand slot at all) is pretty much zero at this point.
Aside from marketing, there's no reason to add any new jobs. There simply isn't the mechanical complexity to make them act any differently. This goes doubly true for tanks and healers, where jobs already directly copy core abilities from other jobs or even exist as mostly 1:1 copies with a few distinctions. Mechanically, the game is in a fricking miserable place and I'm worried that they don't even think it's a problem.

Yeah the closest thing to that is the staff that goes with the Seventh Hell AF in Stormblood, but it's pretty grandiose and has a lantern hanging from it iirc. Bright side is the Seventh Hell coat is a clone of Vivi's, sleeves and all.

double shield healers a meme. there was one fight i could see it doing better because of how much mit it demanded while also demanding very little healing (DSR). otherwise you gotta plan with your cohealer way too much because if you pop your big fricking heals too close to each other you get to have fun doing ET succor and prognosis. and if you're planning your healing that much, you're probably in a static in which case having a pure healer is much safer and preferred in speeds.
When do you even have to plan ahead for that shit? Scholar already rarely uses succor. Most of the time they just both mitigate well enough, that the heaing afterwards is a non-issue.
Games should never be designed around the top players. Classes should be designed around the average player, and the average player is more than happy with a classic priest healer that drops big heals.
Classes should be designed around being fun and engaging to play. If casuals cry its too hard ignore them. If raid troons cry "muh balance" ignore them.

I want to read your fever dream of an RPG class. You would produce nightmares that no game developer, pen-and-paper or digital, with any kind of conscience would allow, and I am hanging on your every word.
I have played FFXI for a long period while it was active and BST stuck with me. It was a class that 'the community' always declared too weak or mechanically broken, but it had a diehard following that would do its thing. It would be perfectly fine to slot into endgame content, but only few players did it. The devs never listened to 'the community' and kept their design with BST the way it was. I never played BST but I always enjoyed that there was this subset of players that enjoyed the class and did their thing, help you out in the overworld whenever you encountered one. I recently got back into XI and read up on BST, they have a whole knowledge requirement that no other class ever has heard of: Predation, knowing what kind of animal is a natural predator to others. This is just fricking cool and I wish the XIV devs would move away from "it needs to be easy as frick to play and roughly identical to any other class in its role".
that sounds really cool, but you know this wont work in the XIV formula. At best it will be a limited job, at which point BLU and BST parties would be more fun than fricking regular combat.
I feel like they really missed an opportunity doing something similar in XIV by going forward with a stupid idea like Limited Jobs instead labeling them as Advanced Jobs and letting people actually play them in all content so long as that player acknowledged that would require more more from the players to do like research, investment, or generally just not being a fricking idiot.
BSTs were dominant in the open world and broke the mold by allowing a soloing playstyle in a game where everybody was encouraged to party up.
Neither of those aspects would fit FF14 because the open world is dead with literally zero danger and everybody has to solo anyways because the MSQ is not multiplayer friendly.
Its a job that used its surroundings to its advantage and FF14 is a game where the surroundings are sterile as shit.

MNK has more group utility than NIN with Mantra. Any "group damage up" ability is generic and on a 2 minute cooldown at this point, meaning MNK with Mantra defeats NIN by default.

Honestly the dungeons are boring, there's rarely any unique wrinkles or ideas in them anymore that aren't story setpieces. The classic dungeons being reworked stripped a lot of those wrinkles and their limited creativity out. Stormblood in general (and, frankly, both sets of Raids for Shadowbringers) had really fun bosses and nothing's really been the same since then.

The problems with Stormblood are pretty much entirely story and cast-related. Lyse is a directionless shitstain that dropped all the previous ideas for something much more boring. The Ala Mhigo crap in general is uninteresting as frick and frankly underbaked. You can tell Ishikawa did her usual world-building and attempts at intrigue with Othard, albeit you actually have to dive into the various side and job quests to really get the meat and potatoes of it, and it's a step above as a result, but reeks of padding out the expansion story a bit longer the way it's set up.
The dungeons? The bosses, raids? All fun stuff, you can tell the devs were hitting their stride but really willing to let loose with challenge and fun patterns, experimenting with silly ideas and gimmicks in the dungeons and shit like the one that turns you into the gasbags to float across chasms for dumb little moments. Where the story faltered, the gameplay fricking shined.
With the noteable exception of the MSQ which was dogshit and became better with 4.3.
I won't because stormblood was shit and most everyone's reasons for it not being shit wasn't there on release.

It broadened the gap between casual and hardcore content even further. It confuses me because I remember a slide where they state they want to narrow it but all of their design choices since then have done the opposite.
Everyone starts at the same basis: an incredibly easy job to play where you cant frick up. So the difficulty is all in watching a MrElated video and learning the DDR. I think that is their thought process.
But since the encounters become more and more convoluted and they need to have difficulty (ie body checks), a bad player is even more fricked and even if the bad player is your friend you will have a hard time carrying them.

If you're talking as a relative beginner, I'd recommend WAR, DRG and DNC, but if you mean you just keep swapping and haven't found your flow yet, it took me a while too. MNK all the way to the end of ARR, and then I ended up GNB and PLD to EW before finally picking up other shit.

Both war and dark are the same shit. DRG is pretty stale but busy. RPR is brain-dead but can be fun, only at max level tho. MCH and DNC are piss easy, like hell.

Steps was easy, the problem with release steps was that they did a horrid job in explaining what the group has to do. They should have had a single player duty before explaining how to use the dragon killers and what the chains are for. But instead of doing that they dumbed it down.
I do agree with the devs tho that the MSQ should be maximum accessible, since this is the broadest appeal the game has.
Even when it was current you could ignore everything and burn him down with plenty of time to spare. It just showed SE that this playerbase is 99% mouthbreathers that couldn't even execute ARR's simple job "rotations" if you could even call them that when most were just priority base
This was my favorite trial in the game and I was really miffed it was removed. I'd always be the guy that gets to the tower and shoots the dragonkiller to nail him. It made you feel like you did something and the npc flavor text was great too.

I might have been carried, I don't know I did it and just paid attention. The people who I've seen fail or groups I should say were those who were focused on dpsing and sticking in the same spot and not paying attention to what was going on.
Back when it came out, before the nerfs, you had to hit all the dragonkillers and use the turrets effectively to keep the dragons in check or you wouldn't have enough damage to kill it before enrage.
Now you can just kill it without touching any of the siege weapons before it even gets to the first barrier. The difference is massive to say the least.

Spamming frost bolt in wow vanilla was more engaging because my thought pattern was about how much damage I could do without pulling agro and screwing over the group, sheeping mobs to help the group. As someone that only started last year, why is there such an unbalance between the amount of DPS classes versus everything else? It's nice that they split it into physical, physical-ranged, and magic-ranged, but the news that the new expac was going to add two more DPS classes seems excessive, no? I would've appreciate another tank class at least. You'd think the queue times for DPS players would push them away from adding more for the moment.
DPS is by far the most popular class to play. There's a lot of anxiety that goes into playing tank or healer and people don't want any responsibility placed on them. Also most people just want to do big numbers.
That makes sense, I guess. Just weird to me considering there's already a tank and healer class for people with anxiety in Warrior and White Mage. Kinda makes me wonder what the next tank class could be.
I kind of understand I guess if it's raiding and stuff but I know people who just will not touch tank because they think messing up will tank their credit score or something I don't know

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a dungeon where both your teams are running side by side trying to race to the finish ala that one trial in Golden Sun. And for that to be a reality you need to have a full party on both sides so there has to be a tank/healer/dps in each team which limits who can join who.
It all comes down to this: Is the player able to choose a side. If they are forced into one camp then its a fricking atrocity. Considering the writer is the guy who made 6.2 and onwards, I expect the worst.

I actually only remembered how it acts like Alisaie can't breathe underwater, and figured they just forgot how you got your ability to breathe underwater too, but you're right. All things considered, the story hasn't even advanced a year in-universe and the forward progression has left the cast unable to really hop back to Othard or other locales except when the WoL needs to go there with them in tow for whatever reason. Odds are as soon as the Endsinger business was done they got called off to other their shit they were working on, and haven't been able to think about it.

I started playing last friday and I'm level 25, kinda wish people would interact more with each other. Only time anyone acknowledged my existence was a random DM asking me if I wanted to join their guild and I couldn't even reply because I'm on the free trial
People interact with each other in the cities, not in the open world (because there's not much reason to be there in the first place)
I've spent a fair amount of time doing stuff in cities, mostly Ul'dah. Visited Limsa today and it had more people at least.

Sadly almost all of ARR is plagued by annyoing random fetch quests. HW is when the main story picks up enough that you generally don't wanna skip stuff.
