it is serviceable, but it's kind of corny because Asian cultures require the good guys to always win, and the heartwarming do-good stuff gets boring after a while
idk why everyone else is being a b***h but the story is amazing. The first expansion and onwards. There's a small dip in Stormblood but the way they tell stories is soooo much better than ARR.
ARR is actually pretty shit for the most part but the lore it lays out is foundational and key to enjoying the later story beats IMO. If you think you can have fun with it despite that, go for it.

they recently updated the game to essentially turn it into a single player game. Outside of like 6 total dungeons/fights, theyre all doable with AI companions. You can be any class you want and go in with the rest of the player slots filled by AI who will all play the fight perfectly. On Oct3rd theyre updating the FREE TRIAL to cover the first 3 expansions of the game.

Main story arc ended, I've done a little of the game after it, but I'm mostly just coasting on good memories of playing the game since 2013. I don't find what's come after EW to be particularly bad, but I just don't have the investment in the new arc like I did the previous one.
On top of that, with a change in my work schedule I no longer have the time to raid with friends or even do roulettes outside of the weekends so I can't really spend any time fricking around like I could during ShB. There's no Eureka or Zadnor to do either so no reason to run around and do boss FATEs with randoms. As far as I know, there's no new deep dungeon either.
If I started playing XIV again, I'd probably just roll a new character and start from ARR to EW and replay the game.

There is zero difference between savage fights and criterion except for length. It is virtually the same content, because all SE is able to do at this point are DDR fights.
This is also why SE/ CBU3 are so confused to what to do in the game, they had a lot of negative feedback about the exploration zones and this is why they implemented the Island Sanctuary for EWpostpatch instead. They b***hed enough and got their way, yet they're still not happy. Honestly if I was Yoshida and SE I'd be telling the player base to frick off.
Yeah, the problem is that the devs are relying on bad information or are so pressed for resources/time that they can't actually itterate on content and instead have to focus on putting out design fires that keeps popping up as the games design shows it's age and lack of foresight.
Players hated exploration zones because players thought that they removed other types of content to make room for it while at the same time ignoring core problems that, if fixed, would make the game better for everyone. If the devs actually playtested the game a bit more and ask themselves "why does the players not like these things?" instead of "what can we replace these things with?" then they would quickly realize that they can't make any content fun while the base gameplay that you engage with 90% of your playtime is simply boring

That is exactly what they are doing and what is currently biting them in the ass so hard. They simply can't shift direction quickly enough to fix problems as the come up since that would mean delaying all of the future content in the timeline which would then just make shit worse.
What they need is to set aside their best designers and tell them: "Figure this shit out and don't start working on anything else until you'vr done so" but they obviously don't have the manpower to do so which means that pivoting towards soultions will take YEARS instead of months or weeks like it should
I think you're right and you make good points especially about play testing, but I honestly don't know how they could implement that as WoW has their Mythic raiders play test and Blizzard adjusted those raids according to their feedback which made those raids unplayable for 99% of the playerbase. If SE were to do similar it would be an even more of a frick up. So I guess the lesson from that is not to have people playtest who are ONLY raiders but a wide variety of skill levels on the content they want testing. If they only have people like Arthars play testing, then it'll be the same situation as WoW.

The problem with the WoW team is that they are stubborn as frick until they get BTFO'd by people leaving and then they fully swing in the opposite direction and start bending over backwards to please anyone and anything while completely ignoring any good aspects of their games up until that point. Devs simply need to get better at their jobs, there is nothing more playtesting will tell you other than "people liked that" and "they didn't like that" but a good designer will be able to stay "in tune" with both the games current design goals and the needs/wants of their players to be able to make good design decisions.
This means that their designers needs to play other games instead of staying within their bubble so that they can learn from other designers and instead of thinking "we shouldn't do this" they should be thinking "why shouldn't we do this?" at all times. One of the biggest faults of the current game industry is that it is way to riggid and hierarchical in structure while at the same time being way to disjointed and lacking of focus/good ideals, the industry NEEDS new leaders, trend setters and philosophers and less yes-men, code monkeys and middle management

Wrong, Yoshida has gone on record to state many times Sanctuary was a replacement for an exploration zone, the Varian/ Criterion was mostly a very small time, a lot of the times it was one guy who had been doing it away from the parts of the game and had no impact on any other piece of content. This is also the reason why Criterion/ Variant rewards were so lacklustre because the focus was on the actual content and it was not made in conjunction with the design/ reward/ armor team.
Thats because EW and SHB are being ghost directed by his assistant, this was pretty much confirmed in EW fanfests when they released the fluxogram for how patches are made

Logged back on today after about 6 months of not playing i think, it was not long after the critreon/variant dungeons released.
Did a duty roulette and got a lvl 60 dungeon i swear i can't remember ever doing before. It was the one with shadow lahabra and the other shadow for the final boos that merge or whatever for phase 2.
Also i feel so lost, have no clue what i was doing before and have no clue what to work on

While content gimmicks is a good short term solution since it sidesteps the worst parts of the game currently (the combat) it also creates the same problem of narrowing the reach of content as it needs to become more specialised to please more players which in turns means that the game will need exponentially more content and content types to keep up with demand. This should be easy to understand as a "bad" thing when you take into consideration that the game doesn't have unlimited time and budget to work with.
The best solution is making Jobs more complex while giving them a difficulty scale, simply just design the game so that some jobs are easier than others by design and stop punishing or encouraging players for picking the easy or hard way out. This is easier said than done but it the way I see it they could start by removing enrage timers/DPS-checks (like they've already done) and then simply make the harder stuff faster to do while the easier stuff slower to do.
For example: >Savage stays the same but with the DPS-checks removed >Each job is now designed around a central gimmick/idea, said gimmick/idea decides how "hard" said job is to play >The easier jobs can make some Savage body checks/mechanics easier to clear but it will take more time to clear while harder jobs takes less time >For example, WAR could stay as the self-survival king out of the tanks. Centering a Job around a gimmick only goes so far. What you want is a more versatile progression into a burst that pays off based on those actions.
Summoner is the best example of this currently, it's just that it's missing the 'pay off' with its rotation.
Good point, I don't think building the combat around procs like WoW would be the best either though. But something like resource manegment and CC could go a long way on its own and some jobs could rely on procs just like how they already work (DNC and BRD for example).
An example of a good gimmick though would be how PLD are much more support focused than other tanks which means that a good PLD would always be looking for opportunities to use Clemency for example which in turn would make the healers jobs easier, that in of itself actually adds more depth to the job without it being centered around dealing more damage and at times it can arguably be more valuable even in the current state of the game

Combat is so formulaic that you don't need that. The raid will figure when Clemency is needed and then you will press the button. There is very, very little "on the spot" decision making because the fights are designed that way.
That is thanks to how the devs have made each fights damage output (the HPS needed) and lenght (the DPS needed) extremely deterministic but that doesn't mean that there will never be room for a Clemency since people will always frick up. They simply need to stop turning EVERYTHING in Savage content (arguably also Extreme content) and above into a fricking Tank check, the devs used to rely on Vulnerability stacks more heavily to punish players but also give non-DPS players more agency over said situation and I think they should do so again instead of just saying "Oh you stood in orange and you're not a tank? You're dead fricko ;)"
Deleting all raid wide buffs to eliminate the 2 minute meta would probably be the simplest solution, and add some decision making into choosing when to use your various buffs and they can go back to individual unique timers.
Some changes to fight design would also go hand in hand with the above but I think it would be a good start to adding some fun back into the moment to moment gameplay.

That would remove the "support" sub-role for the game entierly. They just need to make it so that each player has less DPS buffs and instead have some more manegment attatched to the job gauges. It's also not raid wide buffs that are responsible for the 2-min meta, it's the fact that EVERY SINGLE JOB in the game is designed around having a DPS and a cooldown phase. They could simply fix the current problem by simply just going back on the buff changes this expansion and make it so that the old 30, 60, 90 and 120 buffs don't stack AT ALL, maybe even remove some of them
They designed every job to fit into the 2 minute meta because people b***hed endlessly about every single job and buff that didn’t.
Deleting them isn’t the best solution or even a good one, but the easiest route for SE to then make changes and let each job breath instead of being basically reskins of one another centered around 2 minute meter/CD cycles.
Especially since we’ll never get anything like for instance HW DRG again where you’re rewarded for on the fly snap decision making that varies moment to moment for every fight, with your actions even in the same encounter differing based on variations outside of your control because that renders the gaps between bad, competent, and good players too large for SE’s liking.
Just make enmity a mechanic that needs to be managed again.
Tanks need to actively build and hold it
DPS and Healers need to keep their own damage and output in check not to draw too much of it

We've had lampposts, shisu statues, a material dropped that made either a Seiryu or Suzaku statue, the lantern minion and ninja dog minion, parasol, etc.
Literally just keep making sure you open those Personal Spoils chests, and do different routes maybe.

You can craft anything with scrips gear. You'll need all HQ mats as opposed to just 2-3 if you pentamelded. In my opinion the pentamelds are not worth it since you need a bunch of HQ mats anyway so you might as well use scrips crafting gear and save money
scrip gear will carry you in any craft you do for yourself up to 7.0
if you want pentameld to win money when 7.0 starts by making hq lvlign gear and 100 gear you can get it by crafting your own math with the scrip gear and pentamelding once everything si done

Main story arc ended, I've done a little of the game after it, but I'm mostly just coasting on good memories of playing the game since 2013. I don't find what's come after EW to be particularly bad, but I just don't have the investment in the new arc like I did the previous one.
On top of that, with a change in my work schedule I no longer have the time to raid with friends or even do roulettes outside of the weekends so I can't really spend any time fricking around like I could during ShB. There's no Eureka or Zadnor to do either so no reason to run around and do boss FATEs with randoms. As far as I know, there's no new deep dungeon either.
If I started playing XIV again, I'd probably just roll a new character and start from ARR to EW and replay the game.
Waiting for the patch, I am excited to see the Thordan Unreal since I never did Thordan EX seriously.

There is zero difference between savage fights and criterion except for length. It is virtually the same content, because all SE is able to do at this point are DDR fights.
This is also why SE/ CBU3 are so confused to what to do in the game, they had a lot of negative feedback about the exploration zones and this is why they implemented the Island Sanctuary for EWpostpatch instead. They b***hed enough and got their way, yet they're still not happy. Honestly if I was Yoshida and SE I'd be telling the player base to frick off.
Yeah, the problem is that the devs are relying on bad information or are so pressed for resources/time that they can't actually itterate on content and instead have to focus on putting out design fires that keeps popping up as the games design shows it's age and lack of foresight.
Players hated exploration zones because players thought that they removed other types of content to make room for it while at the same time ignoring core problems that, if fixed, would make the game better for everyone. If the devs actually playtested the game a bit more and ask themselves "why does the players not like these things?" instead of "what can we replace these things with?" then they would quickly realize that they can't make any content fun while the base gameplay that you engage with 90% of your playtime is simply boring

That is exactly what they are doing and what is currently biting them in the ass so hard. They simply can't shift direction quickly enough to fix problems as the come up since that would mean delaying all of the future content in the timeline which would then just make shit worse.
What they need is to set aside their best designers and tell them: "Figure this shit out and don't start working on anything else until you'vr done so" but they obviously don't have the manpower to do so which means that pivoting towards soultions will take YEARS instead of months or weeks like it should
I think you're right and you make good points especially about play testing, but I honestly don't know how they could implement that as WoW has their Mythic raiders play test and Blizzard adjusted those raids according to their feedback which made those raids unplayable for 99% of the playerbase. If SE were to do similar it would be an even more of a frick up. So I guess the lesson from that is not to have people playtest who are ONLY raiders but a wide variety of skill levels on the content they want testing. If they only have people like Arthars play testing, then it'll be the same situation as WoW.
The problem with the WoW team is that they are stubborn as frick until they get BTFO'd by people leaving and then they fully swing in the opposite direction and start bending over backwards to please anyone and anything while completely ignoring any good aspects of their games up until that point. Devs simply need to get better at their jobs, there is nothing more playtesting will tell you other than "people liked that" and "they didn't like that" but a good designer will be able to stay "in tune" with both the games current design goals and the needs/wants of their players to be able to make good design decisions.
This means that their designers needs to play other games instead of staying within their bubble so that they can learn from other designers and instead of thinking "we shouldn't do this" they should be thinking "why shouldn't we do this?" at all times. One of the biggest faults of the current game industry is that it is way to riggid and hierarchical in structure while at the same time being way to disjointed and lacking of focus/good ideals, the industry NEEDS new leaders, trend setters and philosophers and less yes-men, code monkeys and middle management

Sanctuary isn't the Bozja replacement, that's Variant/Criterion. Sanctuary replaces restoration.
Wrong, Yoshida has gone on record to state many times Sanctuary was a replacement for an exploration zone, the Varian/ Criterion was mostly a very small time, a lot of the times it was one guy who had been doing it away from the parts of the game and had no impact on any other piece of content. This is also the reason why Criterion/ Variant rewards were so lacklustre because the focus was on the actual content and it was not made in conjunction with the design/ reward/ armor team.

Did a duty roulette and got a lvl 60 dungeon i swear i can't remember ever doing before. It was the one with shadow lahabra and the other shadow for the final boos that merge or whatever for phase 2.

It's stale. You're just doing your same rote rotation and avoid aoe puddles. There's no resource management, CC usage, LoSing, needing to have smart pulls, environmental interaction, status afflictions, the buffs are all bland tiny percentage increases, no elemental system, no different damage types, no different armour resistances, no builds.

The dungeons and the quests. Game is 10/10 when it's story and boss fights.
Dungeons essentially need to become gimmicks instead of fighting mobs.
The bigger problem is that MMO players don't know what they want because the genre is filled with people that either don't really play games or play games so intensely, they can only see through the lens of that meta game.
As such, the mid-core content in XIV (and all MMOs) is mostly junk.
The truth is somewhere between these two things:
While content gimmicks is a good short term solution since it sidesteps the worst parts of the game currently (the combat) it also creates the same problem of narrowing the reach of content as it needs to become more specialised to please more players which in turns means that the game will need exponentially more content and content types to keep up with demand. This should be easy to understand as a "bad" thing when you take into consideration that the game doesn't have unlimited time and budget to work with.
The best solution is making Jobs more complex while giving them a difficulty scale, simply just design the game so that some jobs are easier than others by design and stop punishing or encouraging players for picking the easy or hard way out. This is easier said than done but it the way I see it they could start by removing enrage timers/DPS-checks (like they've already done) and then simply make the harder stuff faster to do while the easier stuff slower to do.
For example:
>Savage stays the same but with the DPS-checks removed
>Each job is now designed around a central gimmick/idea, said gimmick/idea decides how "hard" said job is to play
>The easier jobs can make some Savage body checks/mechanics easier to clear but it will take more time to clear while harder jobs takes less time
>For example, WAR could stay as the self-survival king out of the tanks. This makes them easy to play but their lack of DPS (vs other tanks) makes shit take longer
>GNB could have their mit/sustain nerfed to the point where they need to rely very heavily on a healer to survive but to compensate, make them deal comparable DPS to actual DPS jobs
>This should encourage players to start playing around the skill level of the groups/jobs instead of the content itself, fostering camaraderie while making easier content harder and easier depending on player choices instead of designer choices
Centering a Job around a gimmick only goes so far. What you want is a more versatile progression into a burst that pays off based on those actions.
Summoner is the best example of this currently, it's just that it's missing the 'pay off' with its rotation.
Good point, I don't think building the combat around procs like WoW would be the best either though. But something like resource manegment and CC could go a long way on its own and some jobs could rely on procs just like how they already work (DNC and BRD for example).
An example of a good gimmick though would be how PLD are much more support focused than other tanks which means that a good PLD would always be looking for opportunities to use Clemency for example which in turn would make the healers jobs easier, that in of itself actually adds more depth to the job without it being centered around dealing more damage and at times it can arguably be more valuable even in the current state of the game

Combat is so formulaic that you don't need that. The raid will figure when Clemency is needed and then you will press the button. There is very, very little "on the spot" decision making because the fights are designed that way.
That is thanks to how the devs have made each fights damage output (the HPS needed) and lenght (the DPS needed) extremely deterministic but that doesn't mean that there will never be room for a Clemency since people will always frick up. They simply need to stop turning EVERYTHING in Savage content (arguably also Extreme content) and above into a fricking Tank check, the devs used to rely on Vulnerability stacks more heavily to punish players but also give non-DPS players more agency over said situation and I think they should do so again instead of just saying "Oh you stood in orange and you're not a tank? You're dead fricko ;)"

Deleting all raid wide buffs to eliminate the 2 minute meta would probably be the simplest solution, and add some decision making into choosing when to use your various buffs and they can go back to individual unique timers.
Some changes to fight design would also go hand in hand with the above but I think it would be a good start to adding some fun back into the moment to moment gameplay.

That would remove the "support" sub-role for the game entierly. They just need to make it so that each player has less DPS buffs and instead have some more manegment attatched to the job gauges. It's also not raid wide buffs that are responsible for the 2-min meta, it's the fact that EVERY SINGLE JOB in the game is designed around having a DPS and a cooldown phase. They could simply fix the current problem by simply just going back on the buff changes this expansion and make it so that the old 30, 60, 90 and 120 buffs don't stack AT ALL, maybe even remove some of them
