It’s a bit complicated. As the game itself is designed, it’s a single player JRPG above all else. Any new character you make must play through the entire story of every expansion, and even if partied with friends, you will frequently have to disband the party to play single player scenarios as you proceed. There will be constant story scenes at a MGS2 level, sometimes with warnings that you’re about to start 15 minutes straight of cutscene, so you better set aside time for it. The story is also actually quite good (until the last few patches).
There is no class customization. Every character of each class plays the same. All PvP is instanced and every class has completely separate action bars when in PvP. Dungeon and encounter design are extremely uniform past 2.0, in that the layout and trash pack layout is near identical for all and will play the same outside of the unique boss mechanics.
There is little randomness in the encounters, and learning every boss amounts to knowing the safe spot to stand for each attack.
At the same time, this does mean all jobs are closely balanced, and there’s less meta to it than most MMO’s.
However, its community is its strongest point. Housing is very customizable, and you will regularly see people advertising that their home is a tavern, night club, or brothel, and you can attend player events like weddings and haunted houses and parties to your heart’s content if you’re after a social experience. I’ve seen it compared to Second Life quite a lot, and I think the comparison is apt.
In short, it’s great for social and story, mediocre for gameplay, and terrible for gameplay customization and pvp. I played it until recently and enjoyed it, but eventually the class design having so little rng or procs that I was doing the exact same rotation ad nauseum 90% of the time became too monotonous for me.

the story is decent, but the pacing is atrociously bad. personally ive never liked final fantasy games or jrpgs in general so i thought it was the most mind numbingly boring mmo leveling ive ever experienced in my life but that’s just like my opinion man and your mileage may vary
the “open” world is very disappointing, invisible walls and loading screens everywhere, especially with wow classic having just recently released its kind of embarrassing that an actual modern game can be this bad in comparison but that’s what supporting consoles will do
the jobs are purposefully designed to be homogenous, safe and balanced but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, you can play anything you want and contribute
same goes with pve content, it’s all extremely samey but it’s sort of fun so if you like it you’ll probably always like it
this combination of homogenized encounter and job design though makes the pve content have extremely poor replay value imo, if you’ve cleared a fight once you’ve cleared it a thousand times and doing it on another job or role isn’t going to give you much of a fresh experience

It's okay if you want a mid-tier FF game with tab target hotbar combat and a lobby system for flashy bossfights. It's a decent timesink especially the super generous free demo.
The main appeal (beyond ERP and in that case just go on fchat or RPC) is the main story quest. It fricking drags it's ass for ages and won't really get interesting until the prologue of the first expansion heavensward where it hit's it's peak. It then dips back into mediocrity until shadowbringers. I liked endwalker but that's mostly because I like sentimentality even if it's heavy handed.
Most of the MSQ will be fetch quests or talking to people with surprisingly little combat until you get to a dungeon. The game is popular and high level characters are encouraged to run lowbie shit so you never really have to wait for a queue long, a bunch of dungeons nowadays also have AI team mates too since the game has long since given up the pretence that half the playerbase never wants to interact with anyone.
Endgame is big bosses that are always in a square or circle arena, they have great music and special effects but the game recycles more mechanics than the most hardcore green activist. Most of these mechanics boil down to finding the one safe place to stand while it fires off then go back to whatever you were doing.
The community is... okay. Yes it's full of degenerates and trannies, it's an mmo they always attract spergs. Though XIV's can be very hypocritical claiming to be le wholesome while also installing porn mods and being incredibly passive aggressive. Some people have described it as toxic positivity, they front as being very happy and upbeat but can turn catty very quickly. The game's ToS basically making it against the rules to criticise legitimately shit players feeds the main character syndrome a lot of people have and enforces their insufferability.

I wouldn't say XIV is bad, but it can get very boring quickly since patches are so formulaic. The game outside of it's MSQ is mostly side content in the "fill out checklists and do menial tasks" category, where the majority of it has absolutely nothing to do with the core gameplay/combat and is there solely just to pad playtime. If you ignore all this then you have raiding/trials to do, if you don't care for those then you have pretty much nothing worth doing between expansion releases with the exception of Eureka/Bozja. Unfortunately Endwalker didn't get one of these large player combat zones and instead got some farming island shit which goes right into the "checklists and menial tasks" pile. For non savage/ultimate raiders, XIV is essentially just one big clothing/mount collectathon.

The reason it sucks is because a good deal of jobs feel completely lifeless outside of the burst window. You could easily fix the 2m meta without removing it by giving jobs more interesting resource gain loops than

It also just makes a lot of jobs feel really samey, as you get punished pretty hard for wanting to deviate from the above "build" rotation.
Another side effect of it is death has never been more punishing in this game. Death debuff aside, missing a burst window is a death sentance for your damage output, bonus points that now all your skills are permanently misaligned and every subsequent burst window will be horrible for you. This create the experience of feeling like everything has to be done 100% on script perfectly, which is going to cause burnout like nothing else.
and it did.
the 2m window is the last thing on a frick huge list of problems with xivs combat, it’s more of a symptom than the disease
here are the actual fundamental issues with ffxivs combat
netcode is ass and makes everything feel delayed and shitty
rotations are linear and unchanging
boss fights are linear and unchanging
the combination of these two means that when you spend 3+ hours progressing a boss fight you’re literally pressing all of the exact same buttons in the exact same order over and over again with zero room for emergent gameplay or free will
jobs have no cool abilities that allow them to interact with mechanics or fights in unique ways, i cant shadow step to a friend on another platform or blink across a death zone or spellsteal a powerful buff off of an enemy or mass grip a bunch of adds in to get aoe’d or spell reflect a bosses huge cast
every job has the same single target damage profile, there’s no cleave or funnel or spread aoe…. because boss fights are all pure single target
and last but not least every job wants to hold their resources for the exact same thing, the 2 minute aoe buff dump, because there’s nothing else to do with them, there’s no adds to nuke or controlled cleave or short term dps checks to coordinate uses of group cds on

Thats not a WoW exclusive issue. Every single MMO back in the 2000s was massive and had millions. WoW was on top but it was not that much of an outlier. The genre as a whole has died down due to other genres, changes in lifestyles, etc. Its no longer has that uniqueness of being the only genre with tons of other players.

What's worse is that, similar to Omega and Dynamis, if you didn't do the Crystal Tower raid then you had no fricking clue who he was. *Change the name from mentor to veteren
*240 days subscribed required.
*mentor status lost after 6 months of inactivity (can be regained by talking to smith and completing all current trails and ex's aswell as longing in for more than 24 in game hours)
*Completion of current ex and all subsiquent ex's required
*Crown removed and changed with medal or shield above players head
*Mentor roulete only pairs you with a player new to that instance
*Mentor roulete now shows job in need and instances recruiting
*Ability to que for mentor on every role and change depending on whats needed when the duty pops (ex i que up, something pops and says "dps needed" "tank needed" ect-)
completion of current NORMAL raid required, *All Aliance raids + Msq (6.5 at time of post) (mb if this is already a thing)
*Increased rewards to incentivise mentors to do roulette even after 2k
*New instanced area designed to teach sprouts how to use esuna, spread for splashes, soak towers and stack markers
*Crafting and battle mentor chats being seperate (honestly this a gripe more than a demand) honestly just massive NN reform in general

The mentor system does need a overhaul, and I suppose my own suggestions would be:
Add a reputation similar to how BDO has commendations in chat, to elaborate, Players get an icon next to their name that changes with how many commendations they have recieved. It helps players that are actually helpfull and veteran stand out
For the 2k+ Rewards what comes to mind is archievement voucher rewards, Adventurer plate decorations, new title, maybe a new glamour too
And on a bigger level I would like them to require level syncd Ex clears for the mentor unlock (To avoid mentors who did it unsync and instantly leave when an ARR or HW extremes pops)

I disagree with this. I think a crown and the sort of image it conveys appeals a little bit too much to the ego of certain types of players who really don't need any more encouragement to think that their veteran status or orange parse permits them to place themselves on a pedestal above everyone else.
And I do think a global chat of some kind would help alleviate the problems with NN immensely. The actual socialising aspect of this game is pretty poor considering it's an MMO, where the choice is between hanging around the godless wastelands of the main city social hubs or hoping you'll luck out with a decent FC and pray they don't live on Discord like 90% of them out there do, and often people congregate there just to find people to chat to. Giving them an outlet elsewhere would take the burden off NN and allow it to exist for its actual intended function.
Just remove mentors as a whole. It's a shitty, broken system. I've never once seen a mentor give out good advice or advice you couldn't get from a couple minutes of googling
The NN is its own can of worms. In my time playing trough a few alts I particularly noticed the Ultros and Brynhildr NN channels try to be as sprout-friendly as they can, even with some topic derailing

completing ex's trails is already required. completing currrent ex trails would mean mentors would need to activley maintain there crown once per patch, and also could help players who wanted to get into those es's too

reforming mentor also comes with reforming the roulete lol. NN is 1 part of the massive issue with the mentor system that is griefing players all the way down the ladder right down to the god aweful 2k roulete grind. you cant reform the chat half and not the duty based half

Remove the commendation requirement. (it serves no purpose considering players rarely give a commendation "because this player would make a good mentor")
Remove the Crown. There does not need to be a replacement icon. (removes those who want a visible sign of special snowflake status)
Remove the mount for completing Mentor roulettes and give it a different requirement to earn. (removes the "completionists" only interested in getting the mount for their collection)
Replace collectables with Expert crafts on Trade Mentor requirements. (removes those who do the now too easy collectable farm to retain access to a general chat)
Increase linkshell limits - not just the member limit but also the number of linkshells a player can be in. (gives players more options to form their own general chats with friends made in NN or elsewhere without forcing players to give up other linkshells they have for subcommunities like hunts, housing, RP, etc.)

Employees do. Volunteers generally don't. I've donated hundreds of hours of time over the years to various organization without any compensation other than knowing I helped to make a difference for others in need.
Mentors will still get their tomestone rewards for completing content, usually with first time bonuses as well.
removing the mount should be the biggest change and would likely clean it up a fair bit.
lets face it, I am sure that many who became mentors, did not do so out of the goodness of their heart or a desire to help, they did it for the mount. remove the mount and you remove the ones who want a unique mount that requires they do x number of things with people they have zero interest in helping or "mentoring" you also remove the mount completionists. figure that alone would go a long way to clean up mentoring
The only requirement to filter most mentors is to make them do all the prerequisite duties synched

I don’t see how that is relevant. Ex outside ARR and a few HW never pop in roulette anyway. Most questions from sprouts are really basic. The current cut at previous expansion is more than sufficient.

A medal is just as ostentatious as a crown. I prefer something smaller and less shiny. I tend to keep the crown hidden outside of roulette (no choice but given the nature of the roulette it makes sense). I help a lot with a variety of things just because I like it.

Mentor roulette is primarily a filling roulette that encompasses all the categories of roulette. It dispatches mentors where someone is most needed and that’s fine as some duties can be less popular than others.

The possibility to queue for more than one role would be nice. However, showing which instance is recruiting would be problematic as it’s obvious some mentors would pick and chose, defeating the purpose of the roulette.

Previous expansion is fine atm to access roulette but previous patch could work too as this is content that keeps popping up. People shouldn’t be obligated to play every duty the day or week something comes out. Let mentors have a life and enjoy their story too!

I queue because I want to and chime in when people have questions or struggle with something. Couldn’t care less about the mount. Maybe they should even remove it because several mentors only care about that and can be quite impatient. It’s the type of thing that makes some mentors leave duties if they think it can take too long vs reward.
I even ended up in an instance with a shameless co-heal mentor who was botting in Aglaia the other day: they were only self healing and doing their basic attack, staying and dying in stupid (not even attempting to move out except when the party would move really far and even then it was very late and erratic), waiting to get ported to next fight and not responding to chat. I guess they were chain queuing mentor roulette for their mount.

NN has a lot of issues starting with moderation but this isn’t one. Having one chat only makes sense and many mentors have dual status. Very often sprouts will ask about general things like glamours, how to find something, etc. that don’t fall in either category.

I've seen people have nsfw RPs in the NN before. I have absolutely no hope that they'll ever do anything.
Personally, I'd like to see the mentor system be reformed into a 1-to-1 system:
- Remove NN and add a Novice Board in all 3 starter cities. Novice Boards will sort registered mentors by selected job and chosen language settings, sprouts/returners can select a mentor and apply to be their student, mentors can then use the board to accept or reject the request. Sprouts can also use the board to ask general questions and any registered mentor can go up to a board to post an answer, then the person who asked the question will have the option to pin the best answer to their question.
- Both mentors and sprouts will be able to end the relationship at any time. If the sprout ends it, they will be prompted to rate the mentor, these ratings can be seen when accessing the mentor's page on the board. If the mentor ends it, they will not be able to accept a new sprout for 24hrs.
- Once in the mentor/sprout relationship, both parties will gain a direct chat channel to each other, this direct channel should function like a tell and bypass the dungeon restriction that blocks tells.
I think a 1-to-1 mentor/sprout relation would be less harmful to the sprout because they won't get conflicting information, the mentor would also always see the question and be able to answer it because there won't be 10-20 people just chatting casually and cause mentors to miss questions.

The mentor system has failed.
Really does depend on server. My NN is filled with great people and some VERY helpful people who actually have the experience and the resources to give detailed instructions on certain parts of the game.
Some servers? 1000% trash.

Kinda seems like most people in here just want to punish some random mentor they got matched with and have made that experience into "all mentors are this way". The vast majority of times you are with a mentor you won't even notice them because the run will be like most others and nobody will care. You only stop and notice that said person is a mentor if they do something you don't like. I'm all for adjusting the system as it is designed, but I think people should let go of the idea of "no rewards" because this is an MMO and people tend to only do things for rewards in MMOs. Without incentive there will be few who actually use the system.

Having spent 3 years grinding that mount out to now be on >100 roulette remaining... if they removed that I genuinely think I'd quit the game. Its not fair on the people who invested years into grinding it. Removal needs to come with re-direction otherwise you'll hurt a lot of players who made that effort
