Anon fundamentally the mechanics aren't difficult, everyone knows this. Why is an Ultimate fight difficult? Because there are mechanics in the fight that you do have to be reactive to, it's part muscle memory part reaction, and a single failed mechanic can and often will result in a wipe. TOP for example is 20 minute fight give it take a minute or two, now imagine you have to perfectly execute up to 4-5 mechanics every 20 seconds over 20 minutes spread over 8 people with there being reactive mechanics that you need to solve on the spot.
The Ultimates are a show of your ability to read mechanics, your ability to react to rng, your positioning, knowing your class pitch perfectly, being in sync with 7 other people and keep it consistent over 20minutes.

Just calling out mechanics and positions. I can also tell you that you don't really need voice chat for raids for the most part. It's more convenient to have voice chat for sure, but they're not necessary, especially for savages. Plugins can help you a ton more.

Download the dalamud launcher, you'll need to connect/ pair it to your account once you've down that you can access plugins through the launcher itself while you're in game, there'll be two more settings options on your settings menu when you open it up and you can browse through that. There are other mods that aren't connected with the Dalamud launcher, like ACT which is the DPS metre, you can download that seperatly, just use google and you'll find out how.

From Aus and play on NA, I tried doing a current Extreme when EW released but some of the more modern mechanics are just too quick and I kept getting clipped due to lag+server tick, put me off raiding because I'm a dead pretty much dead weight.
Ultimate/Savage seems impossible, heard people have to do special strats in NA if they have an ausgay in their group, seems like burden.

If you want something has some really good story with your mmo unironically I'd recommend Star Wars the Old Republic, the Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor are some of the best character stories you'll get in an mmo. It's fully voice acted stuff as well, no reading needed, you get companions and they'll fight with you and you can kick them out of your shit permanently if one of them annoys you, you can also romance in that game. The game itself is set up basically it plays like a WoW clone but the story and setting in that game up to a certain story beat I won't spoil is some really good stuff.
A lot smaller playerbase but it's very active still.

You can play the entire stories completely free, stuff like titles and certain legendary gear is locked behind pay walls, levelling is slow, and there are other pay walled shit but you can do most of content free. There are dungeons and raids, they're nothing brilliant but it's fun, World bosses as well in the Zones. I don't remember too much more, I think I might download it myself and give it a playthrough again while waiting for 7.0
Not really, the problem with WoW is the community there is shit, they'll expect you to know what you're doing, know how to gear, they get annoyed at you if you haven't done the content before and I'm not even talking about Endgame raiding, but simple levelling dungeons. It's why most people who are playing the game are returning players and not new blood, the game is not even remotely friendly or offers anything to a new player.

WoW is very inconsistent with questlines if you're used to XIV's MSQ structure.
For example, if a new raid tier patch comes up, you will be able to access the questline leading to fight Trogdor IV in this tier even if you don't know who he is because you didn't do the previous tier, when Trogdor IV was introduced.
Leveling is also a little bit all over the place in some routes, but that's sort of inevitable after.
Many class mechanics are based on procs instead of double weaving copious amounts of OGCD.
Content is structured with various tiers of difficulty. On the one hand this helps aggravate the gear threadmill situatioon, on the other hand you can find you sweetspot for difficulty, instead of the XIV situation you have normal braindead content and absurd Savage difficulty spike.
However people expect you to know every fricking thing in a instance and will refuse to explain it to you (there's a menu for reading that). Tanking and Healing is way harder in most content.

Part of me thinks the reason why there's so many fricking procs in modern WoW is compensation for the removal of RNG miss/dodge/parry/resist/etc, but it really just made the gameplay autistic instead.

Absolutely worth it. It has so much content and is incredibly active right now. Retail is in a very good place, don't believe the psychopaths who hate anything that isn't FFXIV. I'd personally recommend Classic SoD but Dragonflight is worth looking at also. They're both very different games at core though.

What does DROPS mean?
You connect your twitch account to your <game> account and watch for x hours to earn cosmetic rewards in <game>. It's a form of marketing used to drive engagement with streams and the game. I think game devs pay twitch to run these things, and all the streamers get more viewers (and ad/sub revenue) because of people wanting shinies.
But doesnt that imply that since the drops are for that specific game, all those viewers are WoW players.
There are legit drops goblins on Twitch that just collect shit into their Drops inventory, even for games they don't play.

I stopped playing after MoP but tried coming back a few times and it didnt stick. Its hard to describe but its very 'gamey'. It doesnt feel immersive at all. The gameplay is definitely very smooth, and it does have a lot of max level content in terms of dungeons and raiding. But it doesnt really make you feel like you're part of the game world. Its very "make bar go up" oriented at endgame. The zones do look pretty though.
I'd imagine they just reduce the lifestyle creep and live beneath their prior means. A streamer with any following in the thousands will still make enough to earn a living while working on their own schedule with no commute and doing a fraction of the work and stress required for wageslaving.

Esoteric simon says is based though the problem is it’s not individually done. They already solved this problem by making harder content where the deaths are on you and not instantly wiping the whole group. Leave that for ultimates and actual savage raids.

XIV could use actual shit in the map zones that isn't fricking fates/gathering/treasure map.
Doing elites, dreamsurge, world quests etc in WoW recently made me realise there is fricking no point in going to these zones after MSQ.
Elites = Hunts
Dreamsurge and World Quests are horrendous garbage and I genuinely prefer dead zones over that shit.
Hunts aren't even remotely the same.

They need a lot of work, and not just additional evergreen content. Like for each type of mob, there's one little pocket of the zone where that thing spawns. Most of the time it's not even set up all that thematically(i.e. fish by water). Why aren't they sprinkled around everywhere? Why do they give little to no reward when killed, and instead of upping drop rates on the few that do have mats, SE up and fricking added a new FATE currency to buy them directly? Why aren't there zone and world drops, to give an excitement factor to killing shit?
They need to redo the mob loot system. Outside of farming the sheep in coerthas for wool in HW and the toads and tigers for leather in StB when was the last time outside a quest or hunt you actually went out and killed mobs?
Meanwhile in FFXI mobs have real loot tables that can include fricking SPELLS and shit. We need drops to be interesting.
I don't think RNG Farming is a venue XIV will veer into in any foreseeable future.
It's an old design reminiscent of older korean MMOs full of grindfest.
At worst they willl monetize XIV in another way, like the current GAAS trend.
At best they will make these mobs drop relevant tokens which can be traded for the desired reward, not unlike Tomes.

If you get past the MSQ slog twice, gearing two characters should be okay, since gearing 2-3 jobs isn't that demanding.
