You guys really oversold the Shadowbringers story.
Sure compared to the 3-4/10 story of the other expansions it's barely a 5/10.
But is that something to be proud of?
I've finished all the 5.x patches and this crap is below shounenslop in terms of compelling story.
The MSQ of the base game was 90% irrelevant and the patches were what compelled me to raise my score to a 5/10.
The sidestory raid stories were utterly moronic except for the Weapon trials.
And i've heard Endwalker is apparently worse?

Orbonne was the perfect difficulty for an alliance raid because it was possible for casuals to clear them but it wasn't AFK tier. Having the difference between casual and hardcore content be this much of a yawning chasm is awful for everyone.
I think Bozja CEs and DR/Dalriada are the perfect difficulty for casuals like me. Not savage level, just a step above normal stuff. They felt more challenging that any normal duty to me and I enjoyed it. A few variant bosses felt like that but Aloalo's were disappointing (except gunfairy)
people want their fast crystal tower clears, and while i've never encountered shittiness over getting a raid over on coeurl, the amount of folks that b***h about dun scaith or orbonne is still notable simply because you can't just droll from your fricking mouth and hit your buttons mindlessly.

Almost every scion has basically had a complete arc at this point. They're just boring, static characters who are only still around as main characters to say their catchphrases and be a mouthpiece for the player character.

On release I thought EW was fine but after two years, I think it's the worst base MSQ. The patches only added salt to the wound.
ARR is way better than people give it credit for, especially the patches. Everything mentioned or revealed in them created the backbone of the whole game, it was never deviated from or turned into useless filler like SHB and EW patches. SB isn't great, but the story at least matches the stakes and expectations.

In any story with an actual protag the whole ancient Azem stuff would actually affect the character but because the WoL is a bland self insert blank slate nothing can ever be done with the setup for that.
They should have just let you customise your character while giving them a personality and tons of dialog options in every conversation you have.

Final Fantasies where they started taking the story seriously (so past 3) range from 7/10 (XII) to 11/10 (X) and everywhere in between with most landing at a 10 (I haven't gotten far in XI so I'm not counting that - the 30 or so hours I played was like a 5)

Garlemald was setup to be something serious in ARR and then used as a punching bag throughout the rest of the game. It's almost comedic how little they've done and essentially killing them off behind the scenes is the best thing they could have done. They were clearly meant to be something huge in 1.0 but ARR didn't really know what to do with them and they quickly got passed over for the Ascian plot instead.

That's why the GNB weapon is the way it is instead of being like the Garlean's version that shoots bullets. 7.0 is going to introduce Garleans 2.0 as the next antagonists, but you can be sure they'll get much more love and care.

EW is a much worse story for not being two expansions. That's just a fact. You could still have an expansion in Ilsabard not be about Garlemald/Garleans, or at least leave it for one zone as it is now. And you're still going to get not-Garleans for the next 10 years, so its not like you won't have to deal with cartoonish imperialists in XIV again.

Anon, that scene in Shadowbringers, where you defeat that first major Sin Eater, and bring back the nightsky to the first region is one of the most kino moments in all of videogames. You can feel the starry night wash over the people like a cooling balm, who up until that point had no idea how pained and tired they had been.

One and done for the cheevo. There's also reasons to reclear duels because it's a free 100 coffers or at least Aloalo because of the weapons. The point is about the achievement/title primarily.

Lol, but also its your job to single out targets with the most BH and get your team to gogpile them with your LB. Problem is, other jobs do this way better than MNK so its pretty much useless in FL. That said, you can still be successful with it and proper ROE use makes you nearly impossible to kill.
MNK is surprisingly hard to kill, one problem I'm not understanding is the knockback. I've used it standing in front of the target, behind, etc and it never knocks them back into my allies

You have to stun them to get a 60% chancecof enlightenment going the direction you want it to go. IMO it's a terrible skill and should be changed to a 10y single-target succ or have pressure point added to a different skill. MNK's kit is good, but also very jank, and it's not a pet job like BLM, DRG, AST, or WHM so it will never get minor tweaks to fix the flow.
As a primarily ranged player in Frontlines I can tell you that MNKs are the scariest thing to see, there's nothing I can do to stop them from killing me if they want to focus me. NIN can be shrugged off aside from random sub 50% killings but a MNK combo is impossible to avoid even at full hp.
NIN is literally dogshit now, it was overnerfed to hell, there isn't a single reason to play nin over monk now and its fricking funny how most of the playerbase still want to nerf it over mnk because they may get killed sometimes, every 2 minute for not healing
Everyone in FL has mitigation because SMN summer ruined the mode. Lone MNKs aren't scary in the least in FL, and I also primarily play BRD. With a group? Yeah you better run and hope for the best, but unless you're a BH0 ranged vs a BH5 MNK, there's pretty much no danger.
Battle High in FL does not increase your defenses, even a BH0 MNK can get you killed. A lone monk that wants you dead will kill you the instant you are even a split second out of position.

Do YOU? A BH0 is not killing any job with with full combo and LB unless you don't have purify and recuperate bound. The combo is so linear you can guard the first half, forcing them to use the LB for 50% less potency since it only does 12k when breaking guard.
I really don't think you play frontlines or understand how MNK works, you can't purify a suplex. If a MNK wants you dead and you make a misstep you are dead regardless of their BH, their team will finish the job as you cannot heal yourself or do anything during the combo.

That's what you do as a MNK. It is a crowd control job.
Knockback doesn't work on guard, that's why I brought it up. He had more than enough time to push it after purify and have generous server ticks so damage and status wasn't applied regardless. The raw LB would've still stunned him fir a couple seconds but it looks like the team was far enough behind where the knockback really made the difference.

It's not because there is literally 0 chance someone would have the time to purify and guard before getting enlightenment , it might look like they would on your screen, but you already pressed enlightenment immediately after sss way before they realized they were even stunned.

Trust me, I play way more pvp than anyone else in this thread, I know what does/doesn't work, the flowchart bursts, the timings, etc. Did you know that SAM LB can be cucked by any sort of barrier, including a small one like MNK's 5s shield from Thunderclap? Well now you do.

I love burst and hate it at the same time, feels like the actual attack is WWWaaay after the animation.
A good amount of attacks apply damage at the end of animation. Wyrmwind Thrust is another example, the important part of Burst is the shield which you get instantly by comparison. That shit saved me so many times.

It gets a lot of extra gas due to being an MMO. I tried WoW recently and Blizzard has just completely given up on story over there. I started with tutorial island, then the game instantly flashed-forward to Battle of Azeroth and I was an ambassador for some place I've never heard of or was introduced to. For an MMO, you have to look at FFXI or even more obscure mostly eastern MMOs to get a better story. If 5/10 is average, I'd give ShB a strong 6/light 7. Better than any other XIV expansion rating. Thancred being a total frickboy in 1.0 through Heavensward, and turning him into a surrogate father espionage guy for some girl in another world was a neat arc. The First is just reverse Abyssea, and the Ascians are just the Zilart, but hey, play the hits I guess. MMO stories operate on a handicap, and again, FFXI already owns the crown for best MMO story, so we're just reminding people you should at least put the tiniest modicum of effort in your RPG story, even if it's online.

They straight ported FFT and some Nier sets, I don't think there's much of a fear they won't port XI sets as well. The big question is what ARE they going to bring over, the AF sets are the most beloved and recognizable but that's too much effort to expect from them.

I started playing a week before endwalker came out. I just kinda stuck to melee dps. I'm honestly intimidated by healing and tanking.
Tank is just Blue DPS these days, just turn on tank stance and throw up a mitigation every now and then until you know the fights.
Heals is a bit more complicated but is still basically a 3 button DPS role, your main move / DoT / Meter burnoff attack. Heals just lead to more damage you can do.

What should I start as when it comes to xbox?
The Free Trial, and use it to it's most potential. As for job, try out Marauder for Tank or Lancer for DPS to start with, then try other jobs until you find what you like. There's no penalty other than what you start with is the City State you start in, which changes the flow of story for the first 20 levels or so to varying degrees.
Also 1-50 is the tutorial, 51-70 is advanced tutorial, 71-90 is when you should start understanding your job completely.

New player here, is there any reason to do these quests aside from muh lore shit, because the amount of xp is ridiculous
to level your alt classes when you're sick of roulette grinding or you've exhausted your dailies
nah. and its really moronic that they dont give decent exp. would be a good alternative way to level up characters but as is they are shit.
Honestly, not really. You get better experience from doing roulettes, you get more money from grinding gathering or gaming the marketboard, and most of the stories you find in those quests are barely worth your time for even the best ones.
I've quite literally leveled every job to max and done a majority of end game content, and I can count on maybe one hand how many non-blue or non-MSQ quests I've done.
Some give decent armor that you can use or sell or desynth. Others unlock new blue quests to get important things like aether currents (which you'll start seeing in HW and on side quests)
No, god no. I was a mild completionist when I started this game and those little shits made me not be one anymore. Just look up a video for the one's actually worth doing/give you decent stuff but aside from that don't bother.
For giving more flavour to the World, some rare side quests will give a minion or a title or an emote but most just give some gil some xp but the main point to them is to flesh out the World and side characters/ npcs. They're not even remotely necessary as other anons said you can ignored them completely.

I really wish they handed off XVI to someone else. You can't tell me the current Endwalker we have is the one they had in mind. They were perfectly capable of slowing down the story to explore the world and area of the expansion.

I believe the only reason why Endwalker gets all its praise is due to the wowfugees. This being their first expansion means they are blind.
I like Endwalker because black mages got Paradox and Paradox is cool. I hope Dawntrail adds a third polyglot stack and a big, big nuke that costs either two or three polyglot stacks to deal something stupid like 2000 potency.
I hope we get more pvp stuff in pve. Gunbreakers ultimate is too damn cool to be locked in gay content like pvp
I don't really play PvP at all, so I don't know what spells that mode has. That being said, I don't think there should be a complete overlap. PvE spells for PvE, PvP spells for PvP. I'd rather have new spells anyway.
Dynamis is a wow-tier power boost that does nothing for the story.
It works well retroactively for various plot points and pretty harmlessly reduces the ludonarrative dissonance whilst also setting up a decent hook for the future. It's fine.

WoL is actually pretty underwhelming when compared to other FF protagonists. He needed 6x the amount of people to wound the final boss 4 children beat.
