You wanted something to do to kill the boredom, so grind them to get your crystalized tools that grant bonuses to collectables and quality so you can level up easier in the new expansion while having something most players won't have. Add on the fact that they're piss easy to get makes it better. Otherwise, I'd recommend taking a break and play Last Epoch for two months of sub.

Yoshi should've took EW story into into the patches and started a new adventure in 6.3. Everything with Zero was boring. EW killed a lot of hype I had left in the game.

It will take at a minimum ~2 years to do so, because it won't happen in Dawntrail. If they try in dawntrail then I suspect it'll end up feeling insincere and unearned faux-gravitas. The 'youtube commenter trying to make something epic' 'the reddit and then everyone clapped short story' kind of situation, what ARR in particular (Until 2.5 and the betrayal) reeked of. I have no doubts they can weave gold in a very narrow span of time - Emet Selch in just 5.0, Elidibus went from 'haha afraid of katanas according to keikaku' to something poignant in one. But those were linked to a nearly decade long development and investment in storytelling. It'll also be harder now that they can't just recycle the same plot-beats without it starting to feel hollow. So the twelvers
are going to need to be more than just Amaurotines with Emet or Elidibus' emotional pull.
Political stuff (as in geopolitical not culture wars) is consistently the weakest point of Square Enix writing, which is a reason why Garlemald was so poor.

Werlyt is about Gaius being the dumbest man alive. Literally everything he's ever believed in has been a lie that nobody even fed to him, he came to all of it on his own. He had horse blinders on where the Garlean Empire was concerned his entire life, and the only time he ever even began to remotely suspect the Empire didn't have Man's best interests at heart was when the Emperor was completely supportive of a plan to drop the moon Dalamud for no apparent reason, and then it turned out Nael was possessed by a dragon on-board the moon and the Emperor was a shadow ghost. If that wasn't enough he got a first-hand slap to the face from another shadow ghost by being forced to cast a nuclear bomb and atomized most of his castrum, AND was beaten martially by a random adventurer with God's own protection.
The whole point of Werlyt is that all of his adoptive children are being good little Garleans and Gaius is begging and pleading with them to not follow the imperialistic brainwashing he's filled them with his entire life. Later he sits down to have a portrait painted of himself, his one remaining adoptive daughter who's been thoroughly broken by Valens and the events of Werlyt, and a holographic projection of all his dead children.
Tbf practically everyone in Garlemald is a bit of a moron. Even Varis, after being told that the entire empire is a sham and the first emperor was an Ascian who started the whole civilization for shits and giggles, still buys into the "unite the world under Garlean rule" stuff. The only man in Garlemald who seems to actually have his eyes open is Zenos, and he doesn't care because he just wants to kill stuff.
Also just in general, the Garlean Empire is a dumb faction, it's not a coincidence that the two best expansions have practically nothing to do with the empire and the two worst expansions focus almost entirely on fighting the empire.
thats just the writing being shit and cutting off varis before he could actually act in this position. there could have been an interesting story to be told if it was varis trying to carve his own path for garlemald away from the ascians while still being an antagonist to the player character but they just offed him to push gaydaniel and zenos instead.

that is one strength of having a long mandatory MSQ. everything branches off of that, instead of having to keep track of what comes from where. things can get pretty silly in xiv too, mind you. there can be 3 different estiniens running around for example, urianger getting zapped to the first but still handing out odin attunement, nanamo enjoying a dinner you prepared for her after she 'died', etc

They set up the expansions two expansions ahead of time.
Since the end of ShB they've been going through all the old plot points or loose ends and tying them up, the patch series was a bigger questline than the rest but it's no different in it's goal. You could tell from the start that it wasn't going to lead anywhere due to them cutting out the role questline group and going with Zero and the scions.
I think what was actually being set up was an Adventuring Foray (think Eureka) in the Void and they went way off-base since they had no other story lined up until Dawntrail

And it brought up a good point on how Japanese developers design online worlds. They make very small worlds (real estate wise) with many options within, think Animal Crossing. I think this is one major reasons why the West didn't really latch onto FFXIV that one summer it went viral. The game doesn't FEEL like a MMORPG. It feels like a hallway simulator with things to do. Just my take, what do you guys think the reason(s) why the game didn't carry the success of that one viral summer?
Because it was fake hype, proving a majority of people can't think for themselves. If anything that boost of players was bad for the game because only the garbage from WoW stayed. Hence why there are more people doing nightclub RP events than playing the game. Plus mostly everyone who had a fanbase didn't want to get "cancelled" moved to ffxiv for a brief time, funny enough a good portion of those people already tried FFXIV before and didn't like it.
I think it works both ways:
The influencer feeds a game's popularity, but the game also grows in influence so much that other influencers are almost forced to play.

i prefer this particular problem of gear being boring.
now, you may have a point about gear not actually being used for anything, because of what i refer to as the wyrmhero blade problem. the ultimate weapon of FF12 that requires you to kill the 3 hardest bosses in the game to get, but then there's nothing to use it on. and there's not a huge gap between BiS in x.55 and AF armor in the next expansion. gear really is only for parsing after a certain point. i honestly can't decide if i think thats a problem however, as it sort of sorts high end pve into a niche like other progression systems. Eureka, Deep Dungeons, Bozja, gold saucer games, pvp for example. I was going to put fishing but fishing gear can be used for the other two gatherers too. also, the less important gear is, the more toothless arguments like meta-slaving becomes, esp. among those who don't understand why meta is meta and just parrot it.
i personally don't have an answer, as i feel that the current answer to the progression issue is about as good as can be implemented within the bounds of the dev's state philosophies. there are certainly issues with ilevel. personally i think that all MSQ activities, or anything thats in a roulette, should just have an assigned ilevel that it syncs you to regardless of what you're wearing, like bozja/eureka. and to throw a bone to parsers, have a in game speed clear challenge for raid fights and criterion with titles or glamours.
IMO the smartest way to go about gear in the future, since they've expressed a desire to not go past level 100, is either bring the ilvl climb to a crashing halt at the end of Dawntrail, or do it the very instant you get your AF armors and gear after that will primarily be for glamour or a veeeeeeeeeeery incremental ilvl climb. Something like 10 to 20 ilvls higher than your AF armor gained from the expac automatically at 7.55 instead of 150 ilvls higher. Obviously I don't expect them to go horizontal at least not to the extent people think of as "horizontal", my own dream idea would be that Savage gear gets a modifier that normie gear doesn't but isn't as good as the modifier obtained from the next tier's gear so there's a reason to keep climbing but I do think it would be smarter to make gear not really matter period so long as you're "current" than to keep the ilvl climb as it currently is without level ups to facilitate and justify the system.

its an answer to one of the big questions about mmo design, which is should we bring the player or the class?
their stated philosophy regarding class balance is that they want every class to be able to do everything with about the same level of ability. this lets people play the class they want in everything. it effectively means that no class really stands out as best at anything. it makes entry into raiding smoother, because you don't have new players 'accidentally' leveling and gearing the wrong class and finding themselves stonewalled out of raiding or other high end stuff.
remember, of all major MMOs ffxiv has the LEAST amount of emphasis on raiding being THE endgame activity, especially paired with the functional and bland gearing system that you don't really have a need for BiS.
all of this also fits into their stated philosophy about not wanting the game to devour your life. this was especially bad in older games like FFXI in which once a group invested gear into a player, that player was obligated to show up and do EVERYTHING. this decision nips that practice in the bud. though yes it still happens, but gear isn't nearly as important or powerful as it is in other games.
i personally feel this is the best answer to the question of how players should approach games like this

Honestly? Nothing, which is good and bad. I just can't respect a leader that isn't around to lead unless necessary and can't take their rules serious when they really just ignore their base and use them more for numbers than friends outside of an inner circle. The biggest mistake was that the WOL has ZERO interaction with Valens, the villain of the whole story, whatsoever. He's only seen in cutscenes that you have no part in and gets killed by an NPC character.
He's Gaius's villain, not yours. Literally the only reason you care about anything Valens is doing is the Weapons are too dangerous to ignore

Maybe? I don't hate the game but the free trial isn't really doing much to sell it to me. Considering all the social aspects are gimped because I'm a free player plebeian, all that's left is soloing the main quests or queuing for dungeon runs with randoms I will never see again after it's over.

All discord did was consolidate things, now you don't need a website, messengers, and a voice chat program all running to handle your needs. The most important thing for people in a MMO was being able to communicate with those not currently in the game, have logs to check on, and have a way to save/broadcast information to your whole group.
