xp loss in ff11 wasn't that big of a deal. at level 75 you lost about 3k xp IF you didn't receive a raise. if you get rez by a player you regain 50% to like 90% depending on that players level of raise which you should always have a raise in a party setting outside of the healer also dying or something with no reraise on.it also didn't throw you back down the whole level, just the amount you lost. so 99% of the time people that level down would relevel pretty much instantly. it was annoying as frick to stay at 75 for awhile to build up some reserve xp before you can switch to merit points tho
The worst part of leveling down was suddenly not having all your gear on.
I'm convinced some mmo players are mentally ill, there are people nostalgic for levelling down and Korean style mmo's that do everything they can to stretch out play time by making everything you interact with as grindy as possible.

XIV MSQ is a pretty shit experience but it's a one-time thing rather than a treadmill, it unlocks almost all of the content in the game, and the story itself has some good moments. I think it's in a different class to grinding overworld mobs for rare drops/small amounts of exp or grinding gearscore or looping the same quest over and over which are all traditional forms of MMO gameplay.
XIV MSQ is only grindy if you skip all cutscenes and don't give a shit about the story. If that's the case then the game simply isn't for you

The "negotiation" with Varis is one of my favorite scenes. It was great seeing all of the leaders--some of the greatest political minds in the world--underestimate Varis and get caught off guard when he revealed how much he knew of not only their nations' pasts, but the leaders themselves.

Yea that. I play that for fun and no other reason (not Shatter though, Shatter is skip day). I play mostly BLM, and I focus on destroying people with it. That's fun. I jump in, blow everyone up, then I aetherial out of there to an ally I build up my BH5 over the course of the game by not playing like a moron, so I can more easily kill even more enemy players. In general the PvP moves for jobs are just more satisfying in this game, and that goes for BLM too.
If it wasn't for PvP and frontlines, I definitely wouldn't have anything to do in this game now. Just wouldn't be subscribed, there'd be no point

Diadem was kind of cool but them locking it behind free companies, while laudable, was a mistake. So was the gear with the randomly rolled stats. I like it, but savage troons got their panties in a twist seeing that their gear wasn't BiS anymore. Combine that with the first HW tier being stupidly overtuned and the content never had a chance.
Honestly, I always found Eureka to be way worse than diadem but since people could brain afk hunt train it was okay, I suppose.

But XVI and XIV has no roleplay elements besides creating the look of a character. Besides the tab targeting and housing there is no real difference between XIV (and other modern mmorpgs) and games like The Division or Destiny.

Endwalker baby here. So what can we expect in the following months in terms of Dawntrail info? How does Media Tour and Benchmark work? Are they events like Fanfests?
benchmark is a downloadable program that stress tests your PC for the new expac by showing you some engine cutscenes made specifically for the benchmark (that may or may not have anything to do at all with the final game, i.e. endwalker's benchmark has zenos at the top of the tower of zot kicking aside alisaie), lets you mess around with the character creator, and lets you run through the cutscenes as either the trailer WoL or your own supplied character data. you will always be dressed in the expac's poster job AF, so in this case it will be viper
media tour is an event, but almost everything there is under NDA. it's supposed to be a hype train for the inbound expac. it's also where people will try pictomancer and viper for the first time. usually somebody leaks new skill tooltips or even full trees through screencaps, but XIV watermarks screencaps taken within it (especially on dev-owned machines) and can trace back which machine took which screencap to find out who did it, so this is a clout option for people that don't expect to go to next media tour and/or don't mind being sued to high heaven
what we'll get in the future are the above, a couple of PLLs, preorders for the expac will go up, and they'll announce whatever the hell is in the collector's edition (weapon glamour for probably viper, minion, mount, couple other things)

It should tbh, because right now there is very little reason to bring a RDM in prog compared to a SMN.
RDM has to cast, think about rotation, and loses a lot of potency for the raises. SMN doesn't have to think about rotation at all and gets basically 1 free raise per minute. Of course a good RDM is worth liquid gold in prog because of the sheer recovery potential but in general SMN os just that much of a non brainer.

SMN rework has made them make the entire party run marathons around the boss multiple times per fight because they don't have to care about casters anymore. Sure the 1.5s Glare and extra Triplecast help but it still puts so much of the prog effort on the few jobs that regularly has to cast.
Picto better have a use for spell speed so BLM isn't the only caster who can go full speed.

There's some niche use cases for SkS so I doubt it's going away. Things like getting the exact SkS for phase alignment, or jobs like MNK that require it to fit their full burst on their buff.
There's a 2.4 GCD GNB log for TOP that uses a lot of GCD exclusive tech to gain multiple extra usages of skills. It's only rank 3 because rank 1 and 2 played 2.5 with a party member sandbagging and won the crit casino.
Speed will never be a real stat as long as everything is designed around aligning burst windows.

1.X was also a horribly written VN with barebones gameplay. The XI devs sent off to make 1.X were outright incompetent, XI being good was an accident. It cannot go understated that XIV 1.0 was a fricking dumpster fire and its head was fired for good reason.

1.0 was anything but not horrible written. The dialogues were fun to read, the stories were also fun and way more grounded than the anime stuff we got with the later xpacs.
And now with ShB/EW our game is finally low effort anime with the typical tropes.

XIV was never grounded fantasy. You fight a golem piloted by a shadow ghost in Gridania almost immediately and then move on to the Amal'jaa god of fire.
Wonder if they killed him off as they realized having somebody actually intelligent going with WoL, Lyse and Alisaie during early Stormblood would have resolved a lot of the issues that came up in the story.

Because they clearly regret at least some of those deaths. Truth of the matter is, killing a character off means you can't get any more plotlines out of them (unless that character happens to be Emet-Selch, but that's a wierd case). Ishikawa has commented before on how she had plans for Moenbryda and meant for her to be a main Scion, but then another writer killed her off. Papalymo, as has been said by the others, has his sacrifice and death rendered meaningless and underwhelming almost immediately, proving that just killing a character because "Uhmm, it's about time isn't it?" is fricking stupid. Take this one with a grain of salt, but there's also the theory of how Minfilia was originally meant to have the "New Resistance leader" plotline because it fit her better character wise (also an ala mhigan refugee, actually had a role as a leader before entering SB, actually would have resulted in major changes to the Scions as a group if she retired in SB), which would also have meant a character death, once again, resulted in worse storytelling.
So yeah, the reason you don't see the Scions dying left and right like mosquitos like they did during ARR/HW is that they've been constantly paying the consequences of killing them just because "Someone should die". Plus they just probably decided they had filled the quota back then anyway. It's true that it really felt like Thancred dying against Ran'jit would actually have been a fitting and appropiate death scene, but they decided to play it safe and now we just get to see what else does the character bring in the future.
