Yeah, I'm noticing the same thing, exactly what I thought was going to happen. The original story concluded, most people don't seem to want to get invested in a new one right away, especially if you were burnt out on the gameplay already.
I think one of two things are going to happen, either the team fails to recapture the magic of the original story and the game goes into maintenance mode or they do manage to write something good but it takes several years to build up an invested playerbase and the game limps along until then. I think expectations are high so unless SE really manages to knock it out of the park, we're likely to get the former.
I know I'm not going to bother with Dawntail right on release just because I'm playing other games and don't immediately want to get back into XIV even though I enjoy it. Part of that is because I'd likely just finish the story and then quit because I'm not going to spend time trying to find a static for raid content and don't have the drive to pug it. I can see the story anytime I want, so there's no urgency to do it on release.

I think people are pushing the idea of maintenance mode a bit too quickly, I agree the future isn't too bright atm but there's still a lot of people playing and I'm seeing a lot of new faces on Phantom
The game still has a very healthy playerbase and SE/YoshiP doesn't seem too concerned about the drop in playercount.
Wait until DT hits, if it fails to make a splash THEN I think we can be concerned but until then the game is in a healthy place.

I think DT not making a splash is inevitable, XIV has always been a slow burn. If it is good, people will slowly start returning as they have time, it won't be a huge spike as we saw previous.

I'm not sure why people forget this but the fan fests have always (except for the covid situation) taken place so far before the expansion they don't "build hype". It's not until later on, when we have the media tour, benchmark, and actual live letters that go into detail where the pre-expansion interest begins.

Most of the cutscenes are a list of instructions for the model to do a series of emotes as they would in gameplay, there's no way to load arbitrary animations there.

not only that but the existence of an open-world zone dedicated towards it allows for much more interesting systems and subsystems, while the actual story worlds can't do anything interesting like that due to the base expectation of being able to do there what you'll be doing in dungeons and raids
on top of it you're doing the fricking story in the normal world, and the story isn't intended to be particularly difficult
the normal areas don't need to be just set pieces for the story though, both can exist in the same areas without being right on top of eachother

FF14's main story is incredibly low quality, filled with over a hundred hours of poorly written, unvoiced cutscenes. The voiced cutscenes are much higher quality, but maybe 5% of all cutscenes are voiced. You will be disappointed
The only time you have to interact with multiplayer is for the boss fights and raids (optional).
I shouldn't have to say this, but the elden ring dlc will not sell even half of what the base game sold, since most people got deceived by everyone saying it was the third coming of christ, bought the hype and didn't like the game, this game was literally populating all second hand shelves at physical stores just a week after launch from all people who didn't like it (since it's a mediocre garbage game).

Anyone else have a long-time friend group slowly evaporate from 6.0 toward 6.5?
Me and my friends run a guild, and we've been together atleast 3-4 years by now (I'm bad at visualizing time so I don't know exactly, but its a point I can't imagine playing without them). And like, Endwalker started off really hype for us! But golly, it's like every patch that came in it felt like "Okay nothing new for us to do".
One of my friends were super excited for relics...then their relic was just a tome buy. Another friend was super excited for criterion dungeons...then it's really just a choose-your-own-adventure that you do once. Then I was excited for Island Sanctuary...but then it was just kind of an idle game without the idle part.
I guess you could call it burn out, but we would take multiple-months breaks between subbing just to comeback for like maybe a week and thinking "Yeah this ain't it". I think the most fun we'd have was when they finally added deep dungeon, but we didn't even do that too often just because its a nuisance to organize compared to other content.
I don't really have any grand conclusions or statements about FFXIV, I'm just wondering if anyone else has a similar experience and if it's just me or just how the game is currently.
Me and my friends still talk and stuff, just not really about FF or on FF.
I've had an ultimate static since ShB, we've done everything in EW including DSR and TOP. By the end of TOP, everybody doesn't even give a shit about Dawntrail anymore because of burnout lol.
Though Eden ultimate looks appealing, I don't think DT on launch will be worth it unless they really spice up the job changes because EW jobs are fricking boring to play (and maybe spice up the tanking, I barely position the boss anymore even in ultimate).

Think of your friend group as several pieces of wood, held together by the glue that is FFXIV. You've used this glue for 3-4 years, and its always held the wood together. Functionally, the glue is still glue, it will hold the wood together if you want it to. The thing is after a while, you guys don't want to use glue anymore and want to try using a resin, string, bolts, etc instead because you've been using glue so long you just want something different.
A majority of the points you brought back point to this, its just general burnout/boredom.
With that said it sounds like your guild/friend group is leaning toward the much more casual side of play. In this aspect I do think EW really dropped the ball. Island expeditions are the most casual-aimed content they've ever done, and they managed to make them 95% anti-social which is a huge miss, even moreso when it came at the cost of a bozja type content which had a social aspect.
DT is looking more promising with the addition of galactic expeditions, and the return of a bozja type zone. So that at least is promising.

What you are asking is a little more convoluted than what you want to hear, they fundamentally changed the game when XIV 1.0 was coming out in order to try and get people to swap over. When 1.0 failed they then had to go back and Yoshi P half ass rebuilt XI into a modern ilvl style game to at least keep it afloat instead of seeing it disappear (and stop making them money for 0 effort).

I think Endwalker personally would be the one that decides the stopping-off point. The further away the "Zodiark arc" gets the less directly important it's going to be to anything going on, and that would render a whole hell of a lot of game completely free, while tying into the apparent stuff going on with turning 6.1 or even Dawntrail into a new optional starting point for new players. If a free player takes the ARR start they have a hell of a lot of shit to do from the very get-go, if a free player takes the EW start they get shuttled right up to where things and gameplay are "exciting" but still get cut off just as the game moves on to Dawntrail.
