Really, the difficulty of ultimates isn't so much on individual mechanics being hard except for a very select few but maintaining concentration over that long period of time and group dynamics.
Some people just have naturally higher amounts of empathy.
This is what usually causes stuff like social anxiety over stuff like disappointing others.
People with lesser amounts of empathy are easily able to brush off the feelings of others, which gives them a sense of confidence.

I didn't find this out until the Elidibus fight came out. Never failed one, but I was hard pressed to keep up with that prompt until someone mentioned that you can just press keys.
It's designed to frick with you - it gets harder to add to the gauge the more it's filled, so it gets a little low, the person panics, and fails it. If you just chill out and let it sit at 30% consistently, it's actually surprisingly easy.

Out of the group of 8, 2 people are marked with a square, 2 marked with a circle, 2 with a triangle, and 2 with a cross, like the buttons on a PSX controller.
It was mainly introduced in DSR
all it is is symbols above each players head in the shape of the playstations ABYX symbols so circle, square, x and triangle

dsr and top were good, you should have to suffer in an ultimate, that's what makes the clear so satisfying at the end. uwu and tea were too easy even for their time. if you want something easier stick to savage
I've done TOP from fresh with two groups, the first didn't use AM and the second did.
I think the group with AM legitimately had more issues than the one that didn't (despite the AM group being multiple clearers too)
Sigma is the only part I kind of get it, since it alleviates the need for anyone to do a callout for who goes to girl side (which isn't difficult to learn and do without AM btw, anyone that can look at debuffs and has a mic during towers can do it easily.) Omega it just removes some foot traffic where people are spreading, but its far from mandatory there either.
But I've never done this fight in PF which is where I'd expect AM to feel the most 'mandatory'. To that I think the game could greatly benefit from an improved self-marking capability (basically just a 3s cooldown on a marker being removed so people can use them to call stuff without being overwritten). But that'd also depend on people actually using it and not AM so lol.
People's overuse and overdependence on addons is what's making this situation more frustrating than anything else. Players are literally making themselves worse and less aware in the game because they're lazy or trying to parse or whatever justification they have. Its not even about cheating or not at this point, I think people are genuinely robbing themselves of a great experience and opportunity to grow as players by taking the easy way any chance they can. I've already heard horror stories about raids groups that have to cancel raids because a new patch just dropped and plugins aren't working. Every mechanic including TOP can be done using just the info and tools the game provides, people just don't want to learn the method to solve it that way.
Also players that can't function without AM are also terrible on blind/fresh prog in my experience.

By the time you're several hundred pulls into ToP you're mostly over the "great experience" phase and are slowly thinking about little more than clearing rather than enjoying the fight.

No. Automarkers are the accepted standard because using addons has been normalized in savage and ultimate since SB, and automarkers in particular were all but necessary to PF gaols - so if you ever bothered with ultimates you simply had to accept AMs or you wouldn't find a group that wasn't a static.
There's even marks for fricking TEA nowadays. Is there any benefit to it? No, but the playerbase got used to it so that's how it's done.

I said addons in savage, not automarkers in particular. I don't think there's much use for player marks in any savage fight, even when it seems like they could be helpful (like p4p2 or "limit cut" on the uhhh... the weird white dude from the last raid)

Only very skilled devs work on netcode/engine stuff. They've barely touched any of that since ARR, and if they have any devs with that skillset and experience still around they have all been allocated to work on the graphics engine updates (and would have been doing XVI engine dev before that). Most devs at a game company don't have or need a deep understanding of the engine, they just slap together menus and duties and zones and stuff following the already established patterns.
All of that on top of the general Japanese inability to work on netcode and the fact that they all have such good internet they don't notice, and something like this can easily go ignored/deprioritised for years.

I think specifically in p7 provoke doesn't come off cd on time for every tank swap time. Meaning your gonna have to do provoke>shirk>provoke>shirk
Shirk is useful but you can still nab aggro off easily without proper stance swapping
I'll also mention that if you have a DRK and war you can straight up cheese most TBS and one/two party soaks with War invuln

Provoke should be fine since it's only 30s CD, but Shirk definitely won't come back from CD for all of them which is a huge problem for people who haven't figured out how tank stance works.
Looking at the timeline I guess the only way Provoke would be a problem is if your OT is so allergic to ever touching the boss that he wants the MT to always have threat, or that the MT is so insecure that he has to have it. Just let the tanks alternate between the mechanics and I can't see how Provokes are the problem.

It does come off cd, the only real "issue" that tanks have in P7 is that you have to provoke after the next cast starts so as not to turn the boss and frick everybody up on exaflares (forma de safe spot)

If you've never tried before, Thordan Unreal p9s and Zeromus/Golbez extreme are right there. Decent set of fights to learn on and you can play BLM at 90 where it shines.
To this day I still don't know what I'm meant to do during that clusterfrick phase at the end of Thordan EX, I always just cheesed it with Hallowed Ground

Question from someone that's afraid of doing savage.
I've done Thordan Unreal, Zeromus and Golbez, they are the first fights I did on content. I got pretty got at doing them (I think) and from what I can see on FFlogs I averaged on purple parses.
Is savage that much harder? Because from just taking a cursory glance at P9s and that frickass kick the ball mechanic it looked extremely intimidating and it made not want to try it.
That's pretty much the only complicated mechanic in that entire fights, everything else is on EX level of difficulty.
Shit scratch that I meant blue parses, I did get some purples though
ive always found EX fights harder to execute "well". But their DPS checks are lighter, so u dont NEED to do them well.
So if u purple parse in EX fights, ur going to absolutely demolish savage fights. They are far easier to execute, but more punishing if u dont do good enough dps.
If you can purple Thordan and Golbez then p9s will be easy. Savage is a gradual ramp up - typically the first floor of a tier (p1s, p5s, p9s) is similar difficulty to extremes, then it gradually gets harder until the final floor has mechs which are a lot harder to think about.
You should really have a go at p9s especially if you have some friends to take with you. Party finder players will be very weak at this time but the fight is not hard and the one difficult mech that you talk about is during downtime so you don't need to do your rotation or anything.
Usually it gradually ramp but this time specifically I'd say 10 is harder than 11

(honestly both p6 and p7 are very easy, esp since you tank lb p6; i'd say carby is more difficult than either)

They go out of their way to neuter the frick out of PvE where everything revolves around 2-min burst, and then leave it where some jobs are just better at doing the exact same fricking thing.
Yeah 10 is brutal for newbies. But in Abyssos p5s was much harder than p6s so they really don't nail the difficulty ramp very well.
A lot of people LOVE helping new raiders so if you mention it to your FC you might find some good helpers who will give you a good experience.
And you have to go in with a prog mentality - if after 2 hours of pulls you understand one more mechanic than when you started, that's a victory. You won't get the kill immediately, you won't understand everything first time, you will wipe a lot. That's normal and standard and applies to even the best players in the game. Only feel bad if you lie about your prog and join PFs which are far ahead, or if you fail a lot and don't acknowledge it and try to improve. The fact you can even say that you feel guilty about how you play means you're better than most PF raiders (sadly)

lost a SAM, replaced by a MNK who was new. He was catching on super quick, and I was extremely impressed with how fast he was learning stuff while doing better DPS than the rest.
They kicked him because it took him 2 days to learn the fight. they said hes too slow, and im like, wtf, ut frickers took 2 months to stop fricking up, hes fricking AMAZING.
but yeah, when they were in the 2month learning phase? they kept complaining that the better players were upset at their slow progress.
just stick to ppl at the same learning phase as you. its just not worth playing with those who are ahead of ya.

You'll be fine for P9S if you can do Golbez EX on content, I'd even say Golbez was harder in most respects except for a DPS check than P9S.
The kick ball mechanic isn't all that bad once you've seen it a few times, you just need to break down the moving pieces but it's more flashier than anything crazy.
Don't be afraid. If you can do EX, you can do savage. You may encounter some mechanics that are a little harder to grasp and to execute, but it's nothing THAT MUCH different than doing an EX. You will probably just need more tries to learn and to get comfy with it.
First and second floors are usually EX tier.
Anabseios being a bit of an exception because P10S is harder than usual second floors.

PF cheats in response to mechanics which need a person either doing manual marking or calls over vocal. If they had designed the fight so that all prios could be done with conga line or similar then you wouldn't see this proliferation of cheat plugins. It used to be AM for only Titan Gaols, nothing in UCOB or TEA because it wasn't needed. Now thanks mostly to TOP it's becoming rampant and accepted. Shit sucks but the devs are not blameless in this.

It all works in a static situation but there is a big PF scene too. We're dangerously slipping towards a WoW-style arms race between devs and players and eventually you'll start to see splatoon and cactbot mechanic callouts as standard instead of as points of mockery like they are now.

I meant to say 4 dark debuffs (spreads) instead of 2, but that's literally all there is to it.
Once the group has positioned correctly for the 3 sets of fire bombs and drops the puddles, all you have to do is ascertain if it's hot wing/tail, then see the debuffs (which are placed onto people at the very start of the mechanic, giving you 30+ seconds to read them) and resolve in the given space.

The same way you do every mechanic that's just a list of debuffs, use your eyes and adjust
If you use the target marking macros without a number parameter it will assign a unique number to you and your whole party can use these to mark themselves by the debuff they get.
This doesn't work, if two people press it at the same time it places the marker then removes it instead of going down the list

spreads go west and adjust (melee prioitize farther west then > pranged > caster)
stacks go east
if its 2 healers or 2 tanks party 2 goes farther East
again for stacks depending who needs to stack also depends on what class they play

Honestly the best part of fishing by far is talking about fishing. Fishers are the most talkative players I've seen and finding the same faces showing up at a window is a great opportunity to talk a bit and have some banter. Alongside Eureka and Bozja, this is where XIV feels more like an actual MMO to me.

Is anyone else really annoyed by DC travel? I have to travel to Aether pretty much every day in order to find groups for higher-end content.
Currently, I have to do all of this:

Ideally, they'd add an option to DC travel from the aetherytes that does all of that automatically once you've picked another server/DC, but that'll probably never happen.

50 was the max level at the time so there was no syncing down. Now that classes have so much more in terms of skills and mechanics, dropping back down to 50 and losing all those skills and mechanics makes everything feel that much slower.
Honestly I didn't find the books that bad. My biggest complaint is only being able to carry one at a time, but I rarely had to wait for Fates like so many others complained about.
EW should have done something similar to ARR instead of being, "Oops, all Tomes". I hope DT actually has something since there's a Foray they can tie it to if they wanted.

The static I ended up joining had a pissy healer who ragequit over being told his art sucked the DAY before they were supposed to start this tier, so I panickedly cobbled together a White Mage setup so I could play together with my friend when she mentioned it to me, even though I had never healed anything harder than a dungeon before.
It was a fun experience to heal savage, but I still love Black Mage more.
Tanks more often than not get to carry on with a damage down from mistakes and everyone else will wipe the raid indirectly. Yes I've tanked and DPSed ultimates.

Being able to measure your personal dps and see who in the static is carrying or underperforming is useful, but the game would be a much better place without parse percentiles, profile pages and leaderboards.
I am of the opinion that modding in general has gone too far and needs to be shut down but I have a feeling they will never do it because they will probably lose a lot of subs if people can no longer play Second Life on XIV.

the problem is that most people probably just use harmless shit like chat bubbles or daily trackers or whatever and it's hard to rigorously define what's bad and what's okay, practically every online game has a hard time with this. In path of exile officially it's against the rules to use macros that automatically execute more than one server action but unofficially they don't ban people for using autohotkey scripts unless they want to ban that person for some other reason

I played as a tank and everything except P6 was a fricking snoozefest and that was only fun when I was plotting mitigation in the excel sheet. There's no way it's easier DPS. I think healer is easiest, at least my healers were constantly complaining how boring it is

PAL is 95% as brainless, it just has a slightly fender burst phase. After 70 it’s even better for stomping normal content - a warrior can keep himself and 1 dps alive, a paladin can easily keep both alive.

I stopped going through MSQ at ~83lv when you go to the moon and I saw a clown fiesta of people in golden pig meme costumes, only to continue after Visibility dropped and I could turn off everybody. Things like Orchestrion, no soliciting, voidlist or just /tp are also great to have.

Augmented Law's Order Rod is the best BLM relic step in the entire game and I am tired of pretending it isn't.
And I mean that literally, I've spent like a year swapping between all the other relic endsteps because I was a homosexual thinking that "I can't use an intermediary step, I need people to know I actually finished the relic" but frick it this thing is fricking gorgeous.
Bozja's delightful, most of the first step and Law's Order weapons far outstrip their finished versions. Was really disappointed by the final PLD shield
Law's Order weapons are great, I still use the gunblade.
Blade's Resolve is too close to the actual FF8 Lion Heart for me (dye it Metallic Silver for best effect) to use any of the other steps but I do like all the Bozja steps for GNB. They were really eating good.

Yeah I've just been mainlining MSQ, so I don't even know what the side content actually is in FFXIV. I still enjoyed Stormblood and it had some cool stuff going for it. I really liked the far eastern shenanigans, the entire Yuugiri, Gosetsu, Hien crew, and it was satisfying when Lyse stopped being a stubborn annoying c**t even though it took her far too long. But all together it wasn't as cohesive or interesting as Heavensward. Oh yeah, Revolutions is a great song too.

it's pretty weak in MSQ, doesn't hit heavensward's few highs but also doesn't hit its lows, and character writing for the scions finally hits a stride in stormblood
ShB is kino. EW is... well, I had some major issues with second-to-last zone and the general "ending", but it was still decent. Better than Mhigeria, in any case, even if I loved weebland parts of SB
6.0 is the best expansion story for me, closely followed by 5.0. A lot of people liked HW, but 3.0 itself didn't do much for me. Liked it more than 4.0, though.
Patch stories are a whole other can of worms, and where I'd argue Stormblood kinda pulls ahead.

I'm not sure what difficulty there is in TOP for tanks, btw. It was only DSR that needed a bit of autism/externals, and then only for cuck tanks (ie not DRK)

That's what he's referring to. "Stance dancing" wasn't a thing for anybody in general practice (least of all Warrior who despite being changed the most by stances was still in DPS stance 99% of the time like the other two tanks) and "aggro management" was simply not a thing on the actual tank's end. Tanks established aggro and then did their best to not touch it afterwards, "aggro management" was primarily on the part of DPS jobs who spammed cooldowns and other aggro reduction abilities.
Both these things are essentially post-mortem tank cope. Tanking in Endwalker is 99% the same as tanking in Stormblood.

Positioning the boss was certainly more than 1% of tanking, and it was your main job in SB (aside from not dying) while it was practically non-existent in EW
That's extra cope to pretend your job isn't babyfied as shit. No positioning, no cd management, at most I had to focus on P7 DSR but every other phase in both EW ults were auto-pilot, swap after I dumpster cds.
Most tanks nowadays don't even know what an auto-cleave is nowadays and pull dungeons like monkeys.
there'll never be a case where tanks are relevant for prog. The spread is like 50% healer, 40% DPS, 10% tank. DSR p6/7 and TOP p6 are the only times that tanks are relevant and its fricking mind boggling how many times tanks frick it up basic swapping even though some people like to pretend like dude SB and EW tanking is 100% the same.

you can do that with a bunch of ew bosses as well
I sifted through the alliance raids in my memory and every boss auto-faces south when doing their left/right attack or do it after an obvious dodge like with Llymlaen. There's aoe busters but none are after hectic moments or have positioning involved.
Shirk. Both tanks did voke->shirk to mantain threat and stance danced if dps were not using their threat management tools. It was less of an "auto-pilot" and was definitely more involved because DPS could easily overwhelm you. Watching the threat bar was 2nd nature.
